Ray, with my search for a new job and the Hurricane stuff going on....it kind of took a back seat. But, I start my new job this coming Monday and I'll get our project going again.

Good luck with the new job Arny!! Just wondering from the 84 Donruss collectors, what do you think is the best action shot from the 84 Donruss set. Please scan. Just wanted to a selection of nice action shots from this set.
If the last 6 or 7 carter psa 10's are indicators, it will be sniped by one individual in the upper $200 to mid-$300 range. He continually hammers the carter 10's: don't remember what his ebay id is.
Al - There are internet websites such as esnipe.com that will place an automated bid for you at a preprescribed time; usually within the last few seconds of an auctions end. This provides you with the element of surprise and also more or less guarantees that you don't get shut out when you try and wait till the last second yourself. It is also convenient for auctions that end during a time of day or night you can't be in front of your computer. Give esnipe.com your high bid and go to sleep it does the rest. They charge a small fee for this, but you don't leave yourself open to getting "run up" when you place your bid early. In the long run, not getting run up probably more than pays for the fee. I don't think I missed a thing.
Esnipe requires you to tell RayB in advance anytime you are sniping an 84D card. RayBShotz
To add to what Ray mentioned, you can also check out www.justsnipe.com for their version. I pay $5 per month which gives me unlimited snipes @5 seconds before auction close. I also installed the 'justsnipe' button on my browser's toolbar - I just click on the auction, then click the justsnipe button, and enter my max bid amount. It's a piece of cake. Highly recommended in the registry set building world.
Watch what happens to the Carter psa 10 today for a preview. Check out the auction close date/time. When the auction ends, check out the bids and look at the times at which the top underbidder's bids were placed and compare these to the auction close time.
thanks everyone, I guess this sniping explains the times I thought I was golden and then WHAM, I lost the auction at the last moment.....Can any of you suggest decent prices to bid on a Mattingly, Ryan and Strawberry from this year.... I noticed a Mattingly that ends tomorrow. thanks al.
The Carter 10 RC topped $300. The renewed interest in this set is both exciting and frustrating. On one hand, you have a lot of collectors interested making things very enjoyable....but, on the other hand, the competition now steps up a notch! LOL
Those cards that were previously hardly looked at now have three or four solid bidders per. Oh well, I'm not that far off from completion....plus, I should be looking at only completing and not upgrading, right?

Ray, Yep, that's the guyI recall - kkpkrk. I wouldn't be surprized if his snipe was in the $375 range. He seems to be in the mode of buying every carter 10 on the planet. Sorta reminds me of 'godswork' with respect to 1980 rickey henderson psa 9's.
Arny, Are you getting back up to speed at home? Hope all goes well and you're back on track in no time.
Well, things are going well, just today have the local crews coming and picking up some of the big debris that we've moved to the front of the house. Fences are still down, but overall not bad.
I start my new job tomorrow (finally! ) and things should start getting back to normal soon!

The 'lull' in the action of 84D psa's on ebay didn't last too long........ a bunch of 10's now up for grabs. Many are of higher pops' so I'm not too excited, but I'd like the nicely centered winfield. We'll see how this one goes, as this is a high pop in 10 also.
Maybe I'll lowball snipe on ones I'd like to upgrade. Sandberg is already out of my range. How 'bout you guys?
I just threw up my dupes on the Registry as "My Trade Winds" set. If anyone is interested in trading for any of these, I would be looking for 9's and 10's that I need for my set.
HI everyone, getting a lot ready to go to PSA. See how they go. I'm going to start with 25 or so and see how they fare.....thanks for the snipe info. don't know if I will use it but I'll hold it for future. picked up some cards this weekend from a Morty's...anyone have any dealings in the past with them??? One of them is a Eck PSA 9, guess I'll be upgrading my PSA 2!!! I'm keeping it though for memories..
Well, received the cards I won over the weekend and have to show everyone my new Eckersley......I'm placing my PSA 2 in retirement and this one will be loaded in my registry set.
I purchased several wax boxes this year and had mixed results in terms of centering problems. Some boxes, however were viturally 100% OC in some form or fashion (I had some boxes that everything seemed grade-able also), but I dunno. I love this set visually, but are wax boxes hard on centering?
Any similar or non-similar experiences will justify my cause better.
Al, Nice Eck 9.........another cool pic in the 84D set. Hair a-flyin -- ball a-com'n....... doesn't get any better than that.
Julen, I think these cards in wax/rak/factory are just like all the others from Topps/Donruss/Fleer. It all seems like a crap shoot. If you find a box from the right case, they all may be nice. Just depends. Some of the more serious collectors will monitor case numbers to determine to buy or not. Problem is, when's the last time you saw a 84D wax case for sale or break.......it's been awhile for me.
Last week I submitted 3 invoices. The first was a 20 card submission of material chosen from the high end raw set I acquired. I had high hopes for this submission and even sent the Bumbry and Ashby cards pictured in a previous post above. PSA has graded these and the results were a little lower than I expected considering the material submitted but the Bumbry and Ashby cards were both sort of a reach even for a 9. As you can see here they both received 8's. The Seaver was also a slight reach and received an 8 as well. Here's the results:
The sceond batch is highly anticipated yet because it is the monster 74 card submission from the same high end raw set. I tried to be even more disciminating about those. Not yet received grades.
The third batch (25 cards) was an unqualified disaster. This batch was cards pulled from a FACTORY SET I bought. Some of the cards appeared to be a bit small but PSA as you'll see has graded them all without question. I wonder to myself if that is where those 5's and 6's came from. These cards appeared to be MINT as submitted. A few of the star cards had slight centering issues which I decided to send and give a shot anyway but I really can't explain the harsh treatment on these. (Grader of Death?)

At least I picked up a Sandberg and an Eckersley in 9.
I expect the 74 card submission to do much better. Stay tuned.
After reviewing my results and the POP report for this set it appears that getting even 9's on a few of these is tough, if you assume that low total POP numbers are an early indicator of unsubmittable cards from this set.
I received 9's on: 136 Scott 172 Remy 185 Templeton 464 Tolleson 604 Vandeberg
I can't say for sure that these 5 cards are necessarily tough yet (Bill, you may have a better feel) for centering but total POP numbers are quite low on these few. Anybody with any experience with these cards specifically?
Final note: PSA graded both of these under the November Special in two days. Makes you wonder why anyone would pay more for faster service if a special grades this quickly.
Ray, I'll comment more on your subs when I get more time, but I can tell you that the Remy was hardest of those 5 for me. PSA's turn-around time for me has been similar - just a few days.
Holy Crap! I would say I did a bit better on this one!!
I knew this high end raw set was solid when I bought it and that these 74 cards were the best of the best of it. This is, flat out, astonishing however. I am really pleased. This has renewed my faith that if you give a perfect card to PSA, that it deserves and will recieve a PSA 10 if the merits are there.
Just take a look at this run.

As an afterthought I stuck that one Mattingly card that I pulled from the Factory set in the middle of this lot. They found it for the PSA 8 it was. Perfect and clean it just did'nt have PSA 9 centering.
This last couple of weeks grading these and submitting has been the most fun I've had with PSA and set building in a real long time. Thanks guys for the push. Ray
Great results Ray. I'm getting ready to mail in some that I pulled from a factory set also. The set has been in plastic since I bought it back in 84 so I can only hope to get similar results....I'll settle for 9's, I'm not greedy!!! I also want to thanks all of the registry members that are working on this set who get me inspired to try and put the set together.....it's gotten me away from some of the other sets I am working on but I think I needed a break anyways........don't know if any of you are hockey buffs but just got these back from a recent submission and am proud to show them off, at least temporarily until they are sold...I'll let everyone know how I do on my Donruss submission when I get them back......
ray- way to go!!!! real nice results and great reading.
alnav- great to have you aboard- i love those hockey cards. where did you get those sharp '75's? i'm interested in the clarke, lmk what you are looking for or when you post on ebay. thanks
If anyone is interested, I have a non-factory 1984 Donruss set for sale. The cards are NM-MT or better. I will sell it for $50 delivered. If the buyer is not happy with the cards, you can return it to me for a full refund.
Al, Those are cool hockey cards; nicely centered with great color................
Ray, Those results on the 74 card submission are fantastic, to say the least. 46 tens and 4 eights on a 74 card submission - are you kidding me?! I've had very good results on two 100 card 84D submissions to date, but breaking it down percentage-wise, my weren't as favorable as yours. And you got some real toughies in there. 176 Lansford, 34 McReynolds in 10, 351 Cooper, and the elusive 482 Fitzgerald are some off the top of my head. I'm sure there are other 1/1's or 1/2's in there as well. Your statement about the 'best of the best' getting it's due from a grading standpoint is valid also. Many times I've thought certain cards on a submission were locks for 10's, and while not always the case, more often times than not that would be the grade given. In submitting those 3 invoices with the varying results, you've quickly witnessed what it takes in general to get a desired grade. Same thing happened to me but my subs were spread out over a much longer period of time. When I look back at the first couple of subs, I see where my grading skills needed refined. Things got better later on. However, that's not to say that all grades given were true indicators. My first resubmitted crackout from my first sub garnered a 10, and it started life as an 8.........
Thanks for your kind words Bill. My first submission of 20 cards also came from that set. Could have been a different grader or just thay I was just a tad hasty to get something off to them. It's been a really cool week though! Ray
By the way; when all my dust clears and I get in all these submissions, I am likely to have some more duplicate 8's, 9's, and 10's listed in my "Fair Trade Winds" set. Anything there is available for trade or sale. If interested, just PM or email at aja4rayb@msn.com. Ray
RVC - Thanks for the kind words. Your set is one to look up to, for sure.
Al - Nice hockey cards (even though they are not in my collection) and let me know if you want to give the 84' Donruss set a boost. I can probably help.
Thanks Ray, I've been keeping any eye on your registry "for Trade" sent....will let everyone know how I do when my submission returns. I have sent a few more hockey in also from 75. I don't collect them either but couldn't pass up the deal and have gotten lucky on them so far. Anyone working on any football that are also working on the 84 Donruss set??? I am working on a 70 and 71 Topps plus a few more. Won't be on long tonight, the Browns Steelers game starts soon and that's where I'll be!!
Picked up 13 more PSA 10's last night from that run of listed cards; mostly at the opening bid of $7.99. Considering grading fees and two way postage and packaging to PSA combined with the likelyhood of pulling a 10 when you finally find a card worthy enough, I find this a very inviting price level. Boy am I going to have a lot of scanning on my hands to get all this recent stuff up and into my set.
"Considering grading fees and two way postage and packaging to PSA combined with the likelyhood of pulling a 10 when you finally find a card worthy enough, I find this a very inviting price level."
Ray, I totally agree....$5.00 to grade a card...figure areound $6-$6.50 by the time it gets back to you....why bother for $1.50 profit?? I know he listed them low, hoping to get better bids...but balance that off with the lost revenues from the 8's and 9's that they get back...and it's a loosing proposition.. Great for the set builders to pick up cards cheap....as long as everyone realizes that $7.99 isn't going to be the new norm for 10's....
The problem facing set builders is, if more people keep doing the same thing....it de-values the whole Registry... If you start to loose $2-$3 a card across a 600 card set...or even worse a 792 card Topps set....it can be disastrous to the final value of your completed set...
But, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then...I say if they're going to give em away...BUT 'EM UP!! Hopefully, it won't be the new trend!!
5stat - Great points. I think that because of the availability of raw material most 80's collectors would rather go the grading route themselves. Of course it is more risky but the built in anticipation, excitement and the element of judging with one's own discerning eye is more entertaining and ultimately more rewarding. I think that's why as collectors we do it (grade ourselves). Part of the lack of action on those 10's can be directly tracked to this. Many of the current Registry folk and even those collecting the set outside the Registry will pass on participating on auctions, even at $7.99, just to put their money aside for the chase of grading themselves.
The key again is RAW CARD AVAILABILITY. Vintage collectors still do this to some extent but know the raw supply of high end raw cards is limited so will bid for stuff on eBay often. That said; low starting eBay prices for vintage product will get more attention and action. That's part of why, in my opinion an SMR $25 PSA 10 1984 Donruss card gets 1 bid at $7.99 and a $25 common in PSA 7,8 from a 50's or 60's set would likely get a lot more action with a starting bid of $7.99. Resale value and corrupt SMR values play a role in this too but I really think 84' Donruss players and those collecting other 80's sets flat out have more fun grading themselves. I know I did. Maybe more fun; period. RayBShotz
Bill - I noticed you have upgraded some PSA 9's with PSA 9's in your set. I really applaude you for keeping at improving your cards. Often 9's from this set can be found with varying degrees of centering and there is definitely a way to differentiate for the best of the two. Can't wait to see your set scanned. You must really have all beauties! Keep at it! RayBShotz
Way to go Ray. I agree with the point being made about set collectors wanting to select and have their own picks graded. It adds to the excitement....sort of the Vegas syndrome I guess....wagering that you will get that elusive "10". My submission went in today. I sent it priority mail so let us see how long it takes for PSA to get them back to me. I sent in a 150 card submission...not all 84 Donruss but there are 54 from the 84 set. I pulled out what I thought were the best 54 cards from the factory set I had and a few from another set I had hand collated years ago. Let the games begin!!
I did send in some DK's and the no number Stenhouse. The darling card was way off center so I didn't bother sending that one in. My hope is to hopefully get a 9 on the Stenhouse and som eof the DK's....there were three STEELE version and the rest were STEEL. Not sure quite yet which are hard to get cards, haven't been doing this long enough. Fellow 84'ers give me a clue so I can see if any of mine are worthy...... I sent a few to Bill so he could try and complete his set but I think only one was worthwhile....I also sent in a Bumbry card which I think I read in one of the messages that it was kind of difficult....
Thanks Softie! I still have trouble believing it myself.
Can't wait till these Registered Mail Boxes show up safely. I should have them waiting for me at weeks end. Should be a lot of fun sorting through this stuff and beginning the labor of love of scanning each one for inclusion on the 84D Registry. These submissions should boost me into the Top Five so I can rub elbows with the guys who have laid all the groundwork on this set.
The second 50% always comes harder than the first half.
I fell asleep last night and let a PSA 10 Reggie on eBay get away from me. The hammer was like $22. Is that cheap or about right for that card? RayBShotz
I've finally had a chance to analyze my 3 submissions versus the POP Report and found the following to be tough or somewhat so, where I scored a PSA 9 or PSA 10. Comments from anyone who has screened large quantities of raw cards might have a better feel for the long term importance of some of these results. One basic assumption, that I think it's fair to make at this point, would be based on the # of cards total graded on a particular card. Low numbers of total graded would indicate to me a lack of quality or centered versions available for submission of that card. The total POP on this set is now such that many of the easier commons have total graded quantities well in excess of 20 cards or thereabouts. When I see total POP on a card less than 10 it indicates to me, at least for now, that it is a card that is being skipped over for submission due to lack of quality examples found within raw material searched.
Here are a short list of the cards I think I did well on. (Of course, with 47 PSa 10's over 119 total cards on three submissions that's an undestatement.). I am showing the POP in this way = PSA9/PSA10/TotalPOP.

The POP's may loosen a bit over the coming weeks with the current modern special and some renewed interest in this set. But I'll bet that there are still some cards in here that are most prevalent OC.
Bill, I know you've talked about the Fitzgerald before. I'm thrilled to have pulled the first 9. If memory serves me however, it wasn't perfectly centered. Although all these cards were whistle clean, I seem to remember that Fitzy being slightly OC. I'll try to scan it here when I get it in so we can judge for ourselves if it was deserving.
Al that's right. If you track back to the beginning of this thread you will find that the card is one of the 5 stubborn holdouts Bill needs to complete. The few that I've seen have been brutal. My card came from that high end raw set I got so that collector went through tons of 84' Donruss stuff just to come up with that one example. It was 9 on merits but very close on centering if I remember right.
By the way Al, congratulations! I see you've busted through the 20% barrier with a boatload of new additions yourself. After I get all these cards in I will have some additional 8's, 9's, 10's to add to the trade set. Maybe I can help you along a bit further. It's real nice to have another new guy to climb the ranks with. It's been great fun so far.
Thanks Ray, I hope to be at or near 30% by Christmas. I have to thank Bill for my luck so far with completing the set. He had a bunch of 9's that he made available. I'll be checking out your extra's also. And keeping an eye out for more Fitzgerald cards!!!!
Ray, Gotta say that 47 psa 10's in 119 card total submissions is awesome. You certainly have developed the eye quickly and from now on you should be set to submit with very reasonable expectations, albeit there will be times when you'll scratch your head. Also, you are correct about the low pop commons being usually 'unsubmittable' do to centering problems. Remember to that there are certain cards in factory set 55 card cello 'blocks' that are prone to damage due to being the first card of a certain block - Buddy Bell immediately comes to mind.
Al, Congrats on moving up the ladder. It's been great to have you and Ray on board. As I've told Ray - I'll guarantee the more you get into this set, the more you'll enjoy it!!!

How much will this end up going for?
Stingray

Watch what happens to the Carter psa 10 today for a preview. Check out the auction close date/time. When the auction ends, check out the bids and look at the times at which the top underbidder's bids were placed and compare these to the auction close time.
Nowhere near that number, but you never know.

Those cards that were previously hardly looked at now have three or four solid bidders per. Oh well, I'm not that far off from completion....plus, I should be looking at only completing and not upgrading, right?

Yep, that's the guyI recall - kkpkrk. I wouldn't be surprized if his snipe was in the $375 range. He seems to be in the mode of buying every carter 10 on the planet. Sorta reminds me of 'godswork' with respect to 1980 rickey henderson psa 9's.
Arny,
Are you getting back up to speed at home? Hope all goes well and you're back on track in no time.
I start my new job tomorrow (finally! ) and things should start getting back to normal soon!

Maybe I'll lowball snipe on ones I'd like to upgrade. Sandberg is already out of my range. How 'bout you guys?
Is the Sandberg a tough one? I submitted one but not sure if it will even 9 on centering.

Not sure if it was mentioned. You can get 5 free snipes per week at Just snipe.
for a few bucks you can get unlimited.

Nice Eck 9.........another cool pic in the 84D set. Hair a-flyin -- ball a-com'n....... doesn't get any better than that.
Julen,
I think these cards in wax/rak/factory are just like all the others from Topps/Donruss/Fleer. It all seems like a crap shoot. If you find a box from the right case, they all may be nice. Just depends. Some of the more serious collectors will monitor case numbers to determine to buy or not. Problem is, when's the last time you saw a 84D wax case for sale or break.......it's been awhile for me.

I expect the 74 card submission to do much better. Stay tuned.

I received 9's on:
136 Scott
172 Remy
185 Templeton
464 Tolleson
604 Vandeberg
I can't say for sure that these 5 cards are necessarily tough yet (Bill, you may have a better feel) for centering but total POP numbers are quite low on these few.
Anybody with any experience with these cards specifically?
Final note: PSA graded both of these under the November Special in two days. Makes you wonder why anyone would pay more for faster service if a special grades this quickly.
Ray
I'll comment more on your subs when I get more time, but I can tell you that the Remy was hardest of those 5 for me. PSA's turn-around time for me has been similar - just a few days.

Ray
alnav- great to have you aboard- i love those hockey cards. where did you get those sharp '75's? i'm interested in the clarke, lmk what you are looking for or when you post on ebay. thanks
The set has been sold.
David
Those are cool hockey cards; nicely centered with great color................
Ray,
Those results on the 74 card submission are fantastic, to say the least.
My first submission of 20 cards also came from that set. Could have been a different grader or just thay I was just a tad hasty to get something off to them.
It's been a really cool week though!
Ray

RVC - Thanks for the kind words. Your set is one to look up to, for sure.
Al - Nice hockey cards (even though they are not in my collection) and let me know if you want to give the 84' Donruss set a boost. I can probably help.
RayBShotz
Boy am I going to have a lot of scanning on my hands to get all this recent stuff up and into my set.
Anybody else snag any of those?
RayBShotz

Can't wait to see your set scanned. You must really have all beauties!
Keep at it!

Good luck on your submission. Waiting for the grades to pop is the best.
Any stars from the set with a chance to 9 or better? Tough cards?

Can't wait till these Registered Mail Boxes show up safely. I should have them waiting for me at weeks end.
Should be a lot of fun sorting through this stuff and beginning the labor of love of scanning each one for inclusion on the 84D Registry. These submissions should boost me into the Top Five so I can rub elbows with the guys who have laid all the groundwork on this set.
The second 50% always comes harder than the first half.
I fell asleep last night and let a PSA 10 Reggie on eBay get away from me. The hammer was like $22. Is that cheap or about right for that card?
RayBShotz
the jackson was on the cheap side of 'about right'
One basic assumption, that I think it's fair to make at this point, would be based on the # of cards total graded on a particular card.

Feel free to comment.

Ray
Gotta say that 47 psa 10's in 119 card total submissions is awesome.
Al,
Congrats on moving up the ladder. It's been great to have you and Ray on board. As I've told Ray - I'll guarantee the more you get into this set, the more you'll enjoy it!!!
