Congrats 5stat and Ray............what a good group to be involved with.

Ray - show us some of those bad-boy mints from your raw set. To say I'm jealous is an understatement! Congrats again to bringing super high quality cards to the boards!

I just added my extras/backups/etc to the basic registry under '1984 Donruss Mints' which amounts to around 31% of the set but will be adding more later as some 10's are coming in.

Here's some eye candy that will be traveling to Newport Beach in the coming months. All these are generally very tough to 9 in. They came from a high end raw set purchased a few months ago for a reasonable price..........

I'm most proud of the McGraw, Garcia, and Power cards. These are an absolute frickin nightmare to find centered like this. The Clancy is very sweet; the Orosco pose is one of my favorites - should 9; DK's Dravecky and Young are super tough; Guidry always seems to have top edge paper defects; the Mattingly is the nicest centered and most problem-free I've had to date. Maybe a 10? Doubt it but you never know.

At some point I will include scans of all cards in my 'Summer of 84D' Master set. It's will be a TON of work but will be worthwhile IMO.

Keep the 84D train roll'in guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow, really sweet cards! I always will remember the chase for that Mattingly card back in the day.

bill i thought the cey looked the best and power 2nd. i love the orosco too. nice mattingly too but i dont think they are gonna give it a 10. have you ever seen any uncut sheets of 84 donruss?
    Bob
  • BugOnTheRugBugOnTheRug Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭
rvc - the Cey has the nicest centering but is relatively easy compared to the Power and McGraw. I don't think the Mattingly will 10 but stranger things have happened. 84D sheets? Never seen one but at some point I hope to acquire them.
  • rvcrvc Posts: 559 ✭✭
i wonder where those uncut sheets are!?!?
    i hope so too
    Bob
  • Bill,

The Mattingly looks like a 10 to me! I've seen (and own) 10's that aren't nearly as well centered. Best of luck!

This set has always appeared to me to be lacking alot of the print flaws so common in most issues. Am I wrong? All the 84 Donruss raw I own plus everything I have seen out there makes be believe this. Is this a high quality issue print wise????

Thanks JEB - I just bought and received a few 10's today. Some are centered extremely nice; others aren't nearly as nice as that Mattingly.

SP - IMO the paper stock is better and lends itself to less problems overall. The print flaws do seem to be less as compared to Topps. I think Donruss just really got their act together with the 84 set - the coming together of print quality/control, layout, photos, etc. The only thing that's common with all the other issues is centering. It just plain sucks; just like Topps/Fleer in these years.
  • Bug - Those are killer scans! Great Living Legends card. That's a tough one. Best of luck on those submissions.

It's been a while since I've uploaded scans here on CU. Can you give me a quick refresher?

Refresher: Here's how I do it..............

1 - open up 2 separate browser windows. Go to CU board on the first one and get ready to reply/start topic; Go to www.imageshack.com (it's free btw) on the second.
2 - in imageshack, go to picture hosting page (I bookmark this as I use it often); click browse button to select pic from your computer; click host button to host image.
3 - you'll be given a list of several links of the image depending on how you want to use it.
4 - highlight and copy the 'direct link to image' link.
5 - click on the 'image' icon in the CU reply/start topic dialog box in the first browser you opened and paste the link; do a preview to be sure all is ok.

You don't have to open 2 brower windows to do the above but I do in case a mistake is made.
  • I had a chance to add a few more cards to my set this afternoon so I thought I would link it up so you could get a look at the first of the cards with pictures.

Bill - Thanks for the primer. Somewhere here in the next week I'll scan some of those raw cards.

    Enjoy these here slabbed beauties.
Can't tell you how stoked I got just looking at these while I was scanning.

  • Question for the vets. I noticed some of the cards; even some in PSA 10 holders appear to have a reddish hue. Almost as if the player were sunburnt. Is this typical for particular cards 100% of the time or is it possible to find the same card sunburnt or no sunburn?

    Hope someone understands this one.

    Ray,
Never noticed this before but in looking at the scans above, it is noticable. Have no idea if all 84D are like this or not, but would assume so.

Nice scans BTW. Love that Harper in 9. I've seen 10's much worse than this jewel. Again, another reason never to underestimate the appeal of psa 9's vs psa 10's...........

Those are really nice examples you've posted. The only gripe I'd mention is the Power card has a nasty print spot on the hat image

  • I have a duplicate Tony Armas in PSA 10 if anybody is interested in a 1 for 1 trade of another 84' D PSA 10?

I was looking at 2 - Gossage and the Brusstar. Was outbid on Gossage, but there is one ending later tonight that I'll snipe. It's my favorite card of the set.....Gossage staring at you with his cap pulled down on his eyes with that fading blue backdrop. Talk about a quality photo! I ended up not bidding on the Brusstar as I have a nice self-submit in 9 and this 10 had more tilt than I like. Still a nice card and a rather tough one to boot.

Good for you Ray - glad you picked up some.

Arny - haven't forgot about your request - will get to it soon.

Al and SoftP - C'mon guy's, jump aboard the absolute best set of the 80's! I guarantee you the more time you spend looking at all the quality shots (and there really aren't any duds IMO) you'll get hooked.

BTW, just picked up a factory set from BBcardexchange. Should be here in a few days. As soon as I bust it I'll report on what I found.

Now, if I can just nab that Gossage in about 15 minutes.....................................

    Dan,
$175 sounds a bit high, but if unhandled/unsearched would be fun. I've busted 3 boxes to date and 2 were suspect, so any wax bought again will be from a reputable seller. About a year or 2 ago I bought the other one from Steve Hart and was pleased at the condition - think I paid about $145/150 with shipping.

BTW, got the second Gossage for a little less than my underbid on the first one.
  • BugOnTheRugBugOnTheRug Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭
This is the 9 from my set..........frankly, I'm not sure the 10 will be any better.

And yes - upon further review - this IS my favorite card from the set.

    image
  • That's a great photo on that card Bill...I agree, one of my favorites as well.

Dan, I've picked up boxes in the $125 to $150 range from decent dealers. You might want to wait it out and you can save yourself another $25-50. But, they are fun to bust open! image

I really hated wax from the '84 Donruss. Cards seemed to be all over the place for centering, size, and everything. The factory sets are so nice, it's a shame PSA has issues with their size.

hey bill cant wait to hear how that factory set from bbcexchange turns out. they are my favorite sellers, i have bought great authentic stuff from them.

gossage card is one of my faves too.

I can't say whether factory is better or not then wax. Alot of it really depends on the handling over a now 21 year period. I like the wider border cards found in wax/rak. I like 1 each of all 658 cards found in a factory set. As far as centering there's no clear winner IMO.

I just won a wax box and am looking forward to getting it. I will post the results if anyone would like to see them. I recently won a set and I really like this set. I haven't bought any wax in a few months so hopefully this will satiate my thitst.

  • Received in my PSA 10 Rose I won on eBay a week ago and tried to enter it in the Registry. It is showing up in someone elses set. I know there was some discussion about someone hijacking eBay scans to enter in a set. I have no reason to expect foul play here but I won the card from a dealer, so the previous owner is very delinquent on the card removal at best.
Cosetta is appropriately handling the details for the notifications.

In the meantime I have added additional cards to my set with scans.

    Ray,
here's an email I sent to Cosetta a week or so ago about 'Gary's 1984D set' on the registry:

    <<<<Cosetta,
This is quite disturbing. I've alluded to the 11 psa 10's being added to his registry set in an earlier email. I just purchased these from the dealer last night and will forward you the cert #'s when I get them; then we can compare the cert #'s listed in his set with those I just purchased. Chances are very strong that the cert #'s will match. I will provide you with scans of a few to prove my point.

Additionally, I uncovered this today: He has just added #35 Schofield, #396 Gossage, and #61 Rose, all in psa 10 to his set. The cert #'s are 40278384, 30574409, and 30632846. I find it very ironic that these 3 card he added are all listed on ebay under the '1984 donruss psa' search. If you find that these 3 cert # have indeed been added to his set, he got them from the scans listed in these auctions, all of which will close several days from now.

Please look into this and I will forward you the cert #'s and some scans from the 11 cards described in the first paragraph when I receive them.......

    Thanks, Bill>>>>>

also check the tread titled 'scamming cert numbers for the registry' and read my posts.

If 30632846 is yourRose, he entered it into his set when it was still up for auction with 4-5 days to go before ending.
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,246
That's why I list all of my cards now with the cert # edited out.

I don't want one of my customers sitting there going...."Hey, you gotta take this card out of your registry bub!" ...and me having to explain what sometimes happens and that he/she would have to go through PSA to get it done...yadda, yadda. Just not worth my time.

    Not cool to do that.

That IS the Rose card he entered! (sorry - got the certs crossed)

Look at my post above - 40278384 is listed as one of the 3 he entered while still for sale.
Send a scan of the front/back to Cosetta and mention to her that this is NOT the first time this Gary character has been suspect.

    What a fricken hassle.
