I just got these not too long ago. The first is Luke Easter of the Indians from the 1952 Bowman set. Second, this was not in the mail but probably the best pull I've had in months. It's from this year's SP Legendary Cuts; #54/75 Steve Garvey Game Used Jersey. The third came in the mail. It's the 1959 Bowman Billy Johnson card. And lastly, this too came in the mail. It's a 2002 Just Minors Justifiable David Wright Rookie Card, Gem Mint 10. That's about it for now.
Luke Easter is one of the 2 '53 color Bowmans I have. He had a terrific, albeit too short and too late starting, career (none of which was any real fault of his.)
I'm a Cuban guy raised in So Cal and relocated to South Florida. So, I've always admired the Cuban players that come over and make a life for themselves. And actually, if you take a peek at his stats...Pascual wasn't a bad pitcher! (Check out some stats w/the link) Camilo and Luis Tiant are ones that I'm looking to acquire right now. Since they are affordable, I'm trying to get nice examples (PSA 8 or higher) of them.
Here's a link to some of the cards I've picked up so far for each of them....
<< <i>I'm a Cuban guy raised in So Cal and relocated to South Florida. So, I've always admired the Cuban players that come over and make a life for themselves. >>
I had thought that might be the deal with your interest.
<< <i> And actually, if you take a peek at his stats...Pascual wasn't a bad pitcher! (Check out some stats w/the link) >>
I've talked to people who saw him pitch and they still rave about his off the table curve. He was also a bit of a character and guys like that are always remembered fondly.
Just to tell you what sort of man he still is, he was in my neck of the woods a few months ago to attend Jim Lemon's funeral (as were Killebrew and several other teammates of Jim's.) Camilo and his wife drove up. All the way from Florida. That's a friend.
Aside from Luis Tiant & Camilo Pascual, I've also started a Tommy Lasorda Master "Player" Set!
None of the Manager Cards, just of him when he was a player. It's going to be a tough set to complete though because only 4 or 5 of the 8 cards are even graded. Plus, to find them in good shape? Heh...tough.
But so far, I've picked up the first piece.....the 1955 Golden Stamps only PSA 10!

I agree! those english sets are a true value. I too have some of those sets. for a while I was buying a few a month. i also like how many of those guys grade. vg is more like our ex mnt. only problem i had was that at least one card was usually faulty. the other 49 or 24 were usually nice.
Steve, thanks. I'm already starting to see the Churchman Boxing Personalities set inch ever so higher ever since a few of us have been yapping about them on here lately. The Kings of Speed are much less popular and therefore much more affordable. I'm a big fan of ther Howard Hughes card in there too.
Mike, I've been eyeing a John Sullivan Turkey Red for a few days now and just can't bring myself to pull the trigger. I think I'm afraid that once I got it in my hands and saw how nice those really are it would lead to further purchases.
I can't make out the label and I don't know much about these ... what does it say?
Sort of an interesting mailday for me: A combined 2500 + autographed cards from 2 different auctions lots: Geppi's Roadshow (900+, JSA certified), and Heritage (1500 80's, and 100 or so 1965 Topps, PSA/DNA certified). Obviously I don't have scans yet, but I'll try to take some pics later. Here are some of the pics from the auction descriptions:
The Geppi's lot - It said it had 1336 cards, but it was only about 900. They noticed it before they shipped it, and I got them at the prorated rate (per card).
NJ - scary 10! Looks perfect! Love those black borders - nothing looks better IMO than a clean blackie.
GURU - great pick ups!
Arny - the 55 Lasorda is super - wish I could see the pic better of a young Tommy!
schrist - what can I say but WOW! That's some lot - obviously for resale since you have so many dupes. Let us know when you put them up - I know there may be people here in need of some of those great auto cards!
Raymond
Now you've presented the item of the page! A great check - from 1949 - congratulations on a great pickup!

Thanks! the check was a 5th wedding anniversary gift from my wife :-) It set us back $1100, Pretty good price I believe...
Here's some cbetter scans (but my scanner is making the check look yellow. It is mone a yellow brown...). I love the new check-holders!
And here's another couple of pick ups for the HOF set. Both died in the early 60's. Waner is in the 3000 hit club as well. The pair set me back $525....
Dazzy has a great name and sweeter sig! Neigher auto is very easy to find.
They're oversized cards, right? How were they distributed? Were the packs of smokes THAT big? Were there different sets for baseball and other sports or are they all included into the same one?
I don't want to clog up this thread with a whole conversation so if you'd rather PM me or start a new (or even just point me in the direction of an existing thread ) that would be fine. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

Arthur They were mail in premiums - there were coupons in the packs. The reason they were called "cabinet" cards is because people liked the artwork so much, they actually displayed them in their cabinets at home.
Actually, I submitted a bunch of '85s. Was my lone 10. Plenty comparable 9s, though. Check eBay in the next day, or so. You can get some beauties at a fair price.

I went to high school in Tampa and was raised in NYC - so I'm very familiar with both Cuban and Puerto Rican cultures.
BTW, there's nothing better than a cuban sandwich!!!!
Pascual does have respectable stats - nothing shabby about almost 180 wins in a career.
