The seller had one or two other index cards from different players with similar messages regarding cancelled checks. My guess is that the person was requesting them for the signatures at the time, and it doesn't look like the idea went over too well either.
Brumbach, great index cards. I have quite a few similar autographs, several of which are also slabbed by PSA. I have a quick question though.......are your autographed index cards and postcards slabbed with a large wrinkly sleeve? Though I understand why the sleeve is there, are all PSA slabbed index cards that crudely sleeved? It really distracts from the appearance of the autographs that I have...some worse than others. Do they reholder for free if it's real bad? Sorry, just something I've been wondering about for quite awhile now and saw an opportunity to ask.
Airjoe, all of my postcards and index cards have the plastic sleeve inside, or "card condoms" as a non-collecting friend of mine used to call them. I have a 1964 Topps Giant Brooks Robinson without the sleeve but a 1960 Nu-Card Ted Lyons with a sleeve. I guess that it is to keep the cards from sliding around or getting stuck in the holder somehow. I think that I am kind of used to them by now and they don't really show up too much on the scans. I'm not sure if PSA would reholder the cards without the sleeve to be honest.
MorrellMan sent me these cards - a very nice Christmas present - he knows that I am collecting some games and game cards.
Also, I met Griffins, who came to San Antonio for an Alamo photo shoot, and he humbled me with a great gift - a gumball machine!!!!

TKD, I always liked the photography on the Stadium Club sets, especially the 1991 set. I have been collecting full-time since 1984 and 1991 was a pretty good year for me hobbywise, second to 1987 probably in terms of the fun factor. I started driving at the end of 1990 and remember driving all over New Jersey trying to complete the Stadium Club, Leaf Gold Rookies inserts, and OPC Premiere sets among others. Guys like Walton, Maas, Taylor, and all of the other has-beens on the scrap heep make the hobby fun for me, I'm kind of twisted like that. Maybe I'll rotate Maas out soon and put in the Eric Show from that set, lounging in his hammock, great stuff. And 15 years old now, it'll be vintage soon!

You gotta love the high number OPC commons not found in the Topps sets. A couple of these cards I never saw before yesterday. I especially like the Gardner card and the Lunde (rookie season 1955 or so?) with the reversed image. The Neilson card you don't see too often either. Sorry about the large scans. BTW My scanner kills the colors on these cards. They are much more vivid in hand. Especially the Floyd Smith card. It has to be the most vibrant card in my collection.

Great cards, Bob C. The '70 set is probably just behind the '72s as my favorite set of the decade. I might actually like the '70 design more, but I dig the WHA high numbers in '72.
The mail hasn't been real eventful for me lately, but I did get this last week:
I usually bust stuff out to submit to PSA, but kept this in its SGC 40 holder. I've been contemplating switching to SGC for awhile, mainly becaue of PSA label foul-ups. Not sure if I will, though, since I'm neurotic about consistency. (Plus for all the love for the SGC holder, is it me or do they seem to scratch more easily than PSA's?) But if PSA is indeed scrapping the premium common service level as I thought I read they were in '06, it might make more financial sense to start sending cards to Parsippany instead of Newport Beach.
Has anyone noticed the pants that Phil Esposito is wearing in the 1970 Topps and OPC sets? He is wearing his suit pants along with his hockey jersey, and Stanfield's gloves.
Notice the plaid look to the pants. BTW, was is Goldsworthy or Barry Gibbs that died of Aids a few years ago? If it was Goldsworthy take a look at his 1970 card just above in Bob's post. Kind of a strange look on his face.
Nice OPC hockey - I don't think I've ever seen them before. And Yawie's Phillippe is very very nice. I'll have to take a week and catch up on this thread. Here's a set I couldn't pass up at less than $30 a card - 1927 W512:

His (Espo's) 72 Topps card is from the same shoot. Also about 3 or 4 of the Flyers are wearing jersey #22 in the 72 set. Bobby Clarke's 72 Topps card jersey #22 gloves #16.
I'm thinking the guys were already in street clothes after practice one day and they just threw on whatever the photographer had in the room.

From the back of the card: "Slugger Roger Maris of the New York Yankees examines the famous baseball he hit for his 61st home run, breaking Babe Ruth's 34-year old major league record, after receiving it from Sam Gordon in a ceremony at Sam's Original Ranch Wagon in Sacramento. Gordon, restauranteur and fan, purchased the ball for $5,000 from Sal Durante, young Brooklyn spectator who caught if at Yankee Stadium October 1, 1961. Gordon brought Maris to Sacramento in November for this memorable occasion."
I'm a big horizontal fan myself. The ones in the 62 Parkies set are the reason why I started that set. I'm pretty sure I posted a few of my 63 & 68 Topps here. Both issues are horizontals. Remember these?
This post is less about showing off my new goodies than it is to thank Bob (Onlypsahockey) for really making my deal with his friend Brian (bkritz) happen. Knowing I collect V145-1's, Bob not only connected me with Brian, but really served as a catalyst for the deal when things were moving slowly, if at all. I totally appreciate it, Bob, and hope the hobby gods reward you with a steady stream of PSA 9's.
Anyway, here's the cards:
A PSA 7 (one of only three 7's that PSA has awarded for the entire set) of Billy Coutu, whose biggest claim to fame is probably the fact that he was suspended for life for assaulting an official during a brawl in the 1927 Stanley Cup series.
A pair of PSA 5 Hall of Famers.
Andrews is probably one of the biggest nobodies among the set's commons, but it's always nice to pick up 5's from this set, since there are so few 6's and 7's.
I wish, I am about 5% complete. Have slowed down a little during the Holidays, but trying to average about 2-4 a week. This is definetly a long term project. 792 cards and not all have probably been graded.
