<< <i>Just consider me the tortoise of the group! Slow and steady. image >>

I would say that I was the tortoise, except that even a tortoise has to move forward once in a while. (Actually I have recently moved up from 49 to 46 - image.

But, on to the point of my post. Since my card budget is pretty close to $0 - and will be for a while - I was wondering if any of the other '72 builders had accumulated any doubles they might be willing to trade for a couple of the nicer cards in my set. I'm thinking in particular of 533 Houk (PSA 8) and 731 Orioles Team PSA 9. Both cards are from my own submissions, so I have never bid on either one, but I understand they are relatively hard to find.

What I'm hoping to get in return is as many Set Registry points as possible - so those mid-series 1.5 and 2 pointers are perfect since they don't seem to sell for much, if any, premium on ebay. My set is Dallas's 72's and, last I checked, was at #46 if you want to see what else I have that you may want, or check if I need what you have to trade.

Please PM if at all interested.

    -Steve
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

Well after a very slow week, I did pick up 11 new cards (plus one upgrade) yesterday. ($247 worth)

Highlights: Both Hendersons (one from Jason) and the Padres Rookies(from Jason also) plus four high #'s in PSA 9.

I wanted the Expos team card but it went through the roof. ( I would have had the fourth highest bid!!)

That puts me at 86.02%...............110 cards to go.....

WOOHOO!!!! I got my "dave Read" package in the mail today....... almost all low-pops or HOFers.

Baker.....McRae IA, Johnson IA, Holtzman, Hisle, Jones IA...plus Carlton, Morgan Traded and Killerbrew IA and Kingman.

Dave gave me SUPER DEALS on these cards..............better deals then even I deserve image

I have reached 75% on all the various team sets now. Time for me to send in my FREE gradings. I will have to go through my raw set with bright light and magnifying glass. There are not alot of gradable cards there. (mostly ex-nr) but there are enough. I plan to make this my only time to submit cards.

You guys keep outbidding me, but I find a way to pick up the cards I want. I was very happy to get the #524 Reds rookies from Jason for $42.05. According to the latest pop report, that is the 2nd toughest card to get in PSA 8 or better, whereas the Vida Blue I/A (the 12th toughest) I had to pay $72.05 (also from Jason). The McRae I/A is not nearly as tough in the pop report, but I can't seem to find one for a price I am willing to pay. Arny and I will probably have to fight over that one in the end. Got a great deal on the Henderson as part of a 19 card package deal from Steve (Tribeman).

    Sorry Dave,

I put a last second bid on that Red's Rookie card even though I didn't need it. You paid $5.00 more because of it. I do not need the card but the price was TOO LOW to not bid.

I bid my max on the Blue IA knowing I probably would not win it.....

    Lostdart,
No worries, I bid on every card you won even thought I didn't need most of them. Initially there were a lot of low prices. I think the Reds cards was the big bargain of the group.

What I am trying to figure out is how many of these sets are still in the possession of the listed owner. I have made notes of the sets i am sure of and left question marks next to sets I am not sure about.

I am obvously bored tonight, but what I am trying to figure out is how many of the low pop cards are tied up in listed sets. ...and yes I realize that some are tied up in sets below # 20 on the list. Remember if you retire a set it only stays on the list if it is 90% or more.....

Two days in a row and nothing to bid on. It seems like there is so much buzz regarding the 72 set prices are starting to rise. Nice big group up for auction tomorrow. Hopefully I can add a few to my collection then.

Arny, last I looked you were leading with a low price on the 72 Morgan. I didn't bid on it because I know you have been trying for that card a bit. Hopefully you didn't bid too much, that seller is charging big time shipping fees.

I can help with what happened to the two you have missing...

#9 - Mike's set was Mike Castaldi's. He broke it up and sold it off for a little more than he paid for it to work on his next project - not sure whether that was 75 or not.

#16 - The Corpis COllection - yeah, Rich Corpis broke his set about a year ago and sold off piece by piece.

One humorous note is that Mike Castaldi had another 72 set that hit 94% and he forgot and deleted cards before delting the set - so it was lost for the ages instead of remaining on the All Time FInest list.

Andy Montero also had an all PSA 9 set that had reached 60% before being sold to PSUINNYC (Brian Long) for an offer he couldn't refuse...

So I am taking a survey..........

Way before i decided to put together a 72 graded set, I put together a set of unopended packs from 1968-1989. (minus 70 and 74) None of the packs are GAI graded or authenticated. I have no reason to believe that any of the packs are "retreads"

The 72 Pack I bought on EBAY and paid around $50 about two years ago. The seller said it was a second seriies pack...........but it is not......I can see what the last card is....card #93 NL pitching leaders.....3 HOFers ....more then likely OC top to bottom. I find it hard to believe that someone would "retread" this pack and put this card in................this would make it a first series pack.

Now that I am a graded 72 collector i am tempted to open the pack. The gum is broken but loose. The pack, if authenticated by GAI would probably grade 7.5 + .............

So should i open the pack??

I wouldn't be able to keep that thing closed. Although, if you see that the card is way off center, might not be worth it. Imagine a whole pack of off center cards...definitely not what you'd want.

Well, I won the Joe Morgan for $16 (horrible shipping rates from MileHigh, oh well) and also won two hi #s (762 & 770) the night before.

I guess that they justify it in their minds by saying that Insurance is included. I don't know, but I'm a fan of Joe Morgan and was willing to go to $20 or so for the card. So, since it ended at $23 ($16 + $6) I didn't go crazy over it.

I had a thunderstorm roll through and shut dowm my computor for precaution for long enough to miss most of the auctions I was looking at.

Only snagged one card tonight out of the 8 I was looking at..............Oh well.....

I noticed that there are now only 169 72 PSA items listed..........That would have to be the least I have seen in the last 8 months at any given time. ( I have seen over 400!!) I guess it will be a slow week.....

Here is the curious question of the day?

Do the following ebay buyers have sets in our registry??

    1 - trout-bumm - always bidding on PSA 10s

2 - yorklvh - I hadn't seen his name for awhile (6 months ago I saw his name all the time)

3 - glibersher - months ago I bought a bunch of cards from him, but he buys also Greg is his name...

    4 - lmayer = #17 bblcards4U ????? This guy is a heavy hitter of 9s and 10s and has many sets listed.

There are a few other buyers that I just can't think of now.........

    5 - robesm -

    6 - phast1 -

    Curious minds want to know.......

Woo hoo! Not only did I make a run at #19 on the list....I actually jumped to #18 on the list of '72s!

Thanks Mark! With his half dozen hi #s and minor stars, I moved up two spots and got right back behind Dave. Although, Dave has a nice lead on me (set rating 3.94 to my 3.69). Dave, you are almost at #16! Just a few cards shy of movin' past John Constantino's set. Continued good luck with those auctions to 'ya!

Jami, a few more items listed on eBay in the last day or so. I know that I noticed a few 9s and 10s. Right up your alley. Good luck.

    Jami,

You have great willpower. I would have to open that pack.

I have chosen up to now to not play the submission game. It seems an expensive game to me unless you have PSA10 possibilities. I will as I have said before be sending in my FREE submissions which will total 14 cards all together. I have at present a few dozen cards that will (should) grade out at 8 or better including a few low pop cards.

Well, I won some of the cards that I really wanted tonight! McCovey, T.Perez & Killebrew PSA 8s and also Singleton IA + #608 M.Horkins.

That McCovey had been a tough one for me as most would get in the $20-25 range, this one....$10.49!

With some recent additions, I'm now at 3.82 rating....not too far from Dave's 3.94! image Although, I know that he'll end up getting a stack of stuff coming in from somewhere to pull ahead of me again. image

    Arny,

Friday always seemed to be a good night to pick up bargains. There was nothing I needed up for auction last night although I did pick up a Hank Aaron #299 PSA 8 earlier in the day. I had been carrying a PSA 7 in my set.....

...I see nothing I need until Sunday night late..........there was some interesting cards added last night....some ending Wednesday and some ending Friday,,,,,

    Well...

I received part of my Dave Read "breaking up is hard to do" order.

Dave is funny in that he won't ship out thousands of dollars worth of cards until you actually PAY for them!!!! I mean where is the love - where is the trust amongst 72 guys?!?!?!?!?! image

So, all totaled, I'm on the hook for about 35 PSA 10's and a couple of 9's to replace some substandard ones I've noticed in the set.
The box received today accounts for about 2/3 of the deal and all cards I needed that he still had available up to about #500. I should be able to pay him off next month and hope that no other bigtime set breaks up in the near future. I just can't afford it!

I gotta even see if I can talk Mark into sending in other years for a while and hold the 72's until at least September. Fun, nonetheless...

One humorous note... It now takes 15 upgrades from PSA 9 to PSA 10 from the 1st and 2nd series to move up .01 GPA.

    Hey Frank,

Funny you bring up submitting 72’s. I just put 200 on a PSA submission form this afternoon. Mainly 6th and 7th series. In that submission, I’m submitting 7 #711 Bobby Bonds cards. Hoping to pull the 1st PSA 10. In fact, I put 700 cards from a bunch of years on submission forms this afternoon, what a day! But none of these will be submitted for a month or so and won’t hit the market until September. Have plenty going on already.

Right now I’m trying to rock the 1975 population, have 12 PSA 10’s and a bunch of 9’s going up on ebay tonight.

Going to the National? I’ll be there Wednesday through Friday

    Mark/Frank,

Any 8s that you're looking to get rid of? Us lowly PSA 8 guys could use some help in moving up the ranks. image

Skewed Pop #'s on Low Pop Cards: FYI

I have been told, and I am sure others will testify to the same, that the pop reports on some of the low pop cards in our set are skewed. For example one tough low pop card has a pop of 13 in PSA 8 and 1 in PSA 9. One collector, (I have been told) submitted (and then broke it out and resubmitted) the same card four times in the hopes of getting it graded PSA 9 instead of PSA 8. That would of course mean that there are actually only 10 examples of this card in PSA 8.

I am sure there are MANY other examples of this.......................??

Interesting. So, PSA doesn't keep count according to overall numbers by deleting that 'old' 8 grade and then replacing it with the 'new' grade, whatever that may be?

I think if you send them in the old label they would deduct it from the pop report, but how many people would actually do that.? I am sure if I ask this question over on the other board I would get some responses
