Kretlow is certainly a tough card, in the top 10 for sure along with Klaus, Hamner, Kellner, and Ernie Johnson.

Thanks, Jeff. Yes, they are from eBay. My goal is to complete the set solely from eBay where I don't have to pay funny money. I am still looking for a nicely centered BRobby and Drysdale in PSA 7 but those come up from time to time, so I'm not worried. I was actually more concerned about the Pee Wee Reese card since I hadn't seen very many of those in the past couple of years. Fortunately, Alan M. had a really nice one. What scares me, though, are the Presidents card and the Dodgers and Yankees team cards. I saw a nice Yankees PSA 8 go for close to $300 and don't ask about the Presidents card.
  • Nice cards Buc - I guess I better start buying some stars in 8 to keep up with you.
  • mealewormmealeworm Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭
    Buc,

Great cards. The nicely centered 7-8's are worth the extra money. I have been searching for a nicely centered Mays for some time. I will probably have to jump up to an 8 to find one I like. The Zimmer card you have is great, but I was the underbidder on that auction.image I am so close to 75% on the basic and master and all the team sets that I only need about 8 more cards to get 26 free grades.. I went as far as to break them down by the teams I need so not to leave any one team out when I do get the free grades. I really dont have any top notch new 57's but the Kaline is probably the latest.

I have been watching this card as it is one of the five star cards I need. Guess I don't need to watch it anymore. image

Nice card, Dave. I get scared when I look at my star cards display about my desk and see all of those very nicely centered PSA 6 that I have....and what it will take to upgrade those to equally nicely centered PSA 7 or 8.

  • I sent in a Roy Campanella 57 with my six free ones - recieved a PSA 7 which is what I expected to get. I sent 12 other 57's in on another submission - I got 3 - 7's, 1 - 4, and the rest 6's. The 4 I just blew but the others I felt would be 7's with a couple of 8's. These 57's are tougher to get a grade in than I knew! Rick

Very slowly. I only got 27 cards left to go but unfortunately, I've been getting outbidded more times than not lately.
  • mealewormmealeworm Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭
SLOW is an understatement. I have won a grand total of 5 cards in the year 2007. Lately my snipes dont even fire. Still looking for the F Robby and the Mantle in 7, and Duke, Zimmer, and Mays in 8 if anyone has some collecting dust.

The cards that are tripping me up are the Yanks and Dodgers Team cards. I won't even begin to ask about a centered Presidents card (I've seen 1 in the last year). The BRobby and Drysdale do come up regularly, it's just a matter of how much (way) over SMR I want to bid.
  • I have to upgrade 43 cards to be complete in 7 or better. Unfortunately most of the cards I need are Yankees or stars which are hard to find somewhat centered at reasonale prices. I wanted to finish by the end of the year but it is already not looking good and it is only February.

Worm have you sent in those 26 free submissions yet? Would like to see those grades when they come in.
  • mealewormmealeworm Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭
    Jojo,
I haven't sent the them in yet. They are packed and ready but I haven't secured all my free grades yet. I still have 3 team sets that need 2-3 cards and 4 that need only one card. I should be able to get those picked up in an off ebay deal I have going on currently. I was running the numbers the other day and if I use 13 or more of those 26 free grades I will have 250 self sub cards in my set. Plus I have sold numerous 6's that were 7's and 8's on another given day. I am sending in a few dogs like the checklist and contest cards in those 26 so overall grades wont be that great.

  • Worm,

Nice job with 250 of your own submissions. I will be lucky to have 5 of my own submissions in my set when complete. I also recently sent in the 4 contest cards and a few checklists. I was happy just to have them in any grade for my master set. I wish I had your eye for submissions or better yet your raw cards.
  • mealewormmealeworm Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭
I need seven cards to get my 26 free grades. I need 2BD, 2STL, 1 NYY, 1 KCA, 1 CWS. I am over 75% but some of the team sets are notimage.
I can not believe how many auctions of have been underbidder on lately. I might need to stop building my set like I am shopping on double coupon day. The registry has blown up for the 57's in 7-8 range. There are new sets everyday and alot of folks with NM or better sets. I enjoy the persuit but enough is enough I need to win some cards..image

  • Worm,

I have a long way to go on my second set to get my free grades and you are so close to get yours that I would like to help you out, if I have any cards in my second set that you need let me know.

I hear you guys about getting outbid on most cards I need to upgrade - there are a few new collectors out there with some deep pockets that don't get outbid often.

Buc, same offer goes out to you If I have anything you need.

78% right at 7.22GPA. Only a few stars in 8 and a few tough cards left to go and the rest should be simple. Did you see the hammer on the Bauer LOL No buc I wasn't bidding on that. Insane.

You know, sometimes I just don't get it. I just sold a 4-card lot of 57s - each graded at PSA 6 for about $6.50 each. I then also had five PSA 7s that I listed individually. They each sold for between $4.50 and $7.00. The PSA 6s weren't anything special, nor were the PSA 7s anything but typical. I just don't get it.

    Steve,

I assume e-bay? Its just demand at that particular moment ..... tomorrow those 7's might fetch 20 bucks. The next day 12 dollars and then the next day 17, the next day 8, etc.

Doesn't anyone other than pauljas and Levi Bleam (both too overhyped and overpriced) put any '57's up for auction on eBay? Does anybody ever purchase any of their crummy expensive stuff?
  • MantlefanMantlefan Posts: 1,079 ✭✭
When I upgrade my set, I always put up my PSA 8's on EBAY. About a 100 in the past year. The thing is, my cards are usually won by Pauljas
    who then re-sells them.

I wish you guys wouldn't bring up pauljas. I have his username blocked from all of my searches, as well as being a blocked bidder. It's just my personal opinion, as I stated here previously, but it's embarassing to me as a 57 collector to have him keep doing whatever he's doing.

On a more positive note, I am only 18 cards away from completion. The last 5-8% has been very, very tough as I am trying to keep true to my price goals. What that ends up meaning is that I am having to drop down a grade to get the card I want at the price I want. Along the ways, I learn what some of the more valuable PSA 8 commons are.

To keep from getting too frustrated, I have begun work on completing my 1967-1972 raw sets in mid-grade. That's a nice, fun change of pace.
  • mealewormmealeworm Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭
I had to pull this thread off the bottom of the pile. I am up to 82% on my basic set thanks to deal with Frank E. In the past few years of collecting 57's I had three different dealings with Frank, and I would like to share them with the boards. All three had something special and very different to them. The first deal was for a $1000 1957 PSA9 that I was selling. After the deal was agreed upon he decides to send me his PSA8(valued at $75-100) to cover shipping which was already in the price. The second was an ebay purchase for multiple cards and he invoices for card amount DOES NOT accept any shipping charges. In our last deal he takes a decent % off the sale and when I asked to pay with paypal and add alittle to cover the fees. You could probably guess what happened. He took the paypal and ate the fees... Frank is the Man, and will be missed in the 57 world.

And for all you 0 cert bashers I guess these two slipped by.

    Where has everyone gone?

I have been following the sale of Frank's set and would love to here from him on the realized prices. They have to be unreal. I have also noticed the top 5 57 set builders have added crazy amounts of cards to their sets, mostly Frank's card I am guessing. LR's set is off the charts. I am sitting back at about 83% complete and at a 7.26 GPA. I have really slowed through the summer and hope to pick up once the weather turns. I am waiting to hear how everyone is doing with their sets.

Wow, I don't know what to think about that sale. Lothar makes a few good points and I would want to see better centering for 18K. The set had SMR of about 20K so I feel he could not have done any better.

The set if it didn't include the checklists sold for a couple hundred over SMR of it's contents. I really couldn't tell from the listing if they were included or not. I think the seller did well, the buyer got a outstanding set, and no auction house got any of the action. Ebay of course takes a chunk, but it is minimal vs. 15%-25% at a auction house.
  • BuccaneerBuccaneer Posts: 1,794 ✭✭
Thanks guys. As I mentioned in another thread, I like the idea of selling the 7s and 8s separately, not only could I end making a little more but it thrills me to be able to help out fellow collectors here (thanks Dave, George, Jeff and Loth). They have given me help as I was building this set and I would like to return the favor.

But this is not the end of the great 1957 set for me. I am keeping my 150+ 6s and using them to build a nice raw set. As I now much prefer to see sets in a binder and actually *feel* them, I think I am going to appreciate them more than when they were in plastic slabs. Last night, I started to put some of the cards in a beautiful burgundy binder and I think it's going to be fun working on this along with the other sets I'm trying to complete from the 60s and early 70s.

Thanks for the kind words Dave.

The selling of my 1957 set continues to go well. Due to scarcity, some of my PSA 8's have gone for more than some of the 9's.
