An unranked South Carolina absolutely destroyed Tennessee last night, a team you were assuming would and should be in the playoff. They were exposed and embarrassed, as though nobody was convinced when they got smoked by Georgia. Realistically, Notre Dame, Oregon and Tennessee are or should be considered equal, not based on only one game but on where they are right now. Look at Alabama, they got beaten by Tennessee who got beat by Georgia and South Carolina. Should they have an outside shot at the top four spots??
I don't look at things like you do unless it's the only way to make an argument. As I said earlier, I don't think some of these SEC teams are as good as everyone, you included, would have us believe. I also don't believe that the Big 10 teams you despise are all as bad as you believe. Again, I look at how extremely difficult it is in NCAA D1 Football to go an entire season undefeated, that's why we have days like yesterday.........................EVERYBODY had a tough time!!! The NCAA has constructed a system which works against what they want, some consensus of opinion on who the best team is. That shouldn't be some agreement by a "committee" to decide what the best match-ups are to achieve their desired result, but that's what we get. I think they owe it to the teams, the fans and even themselves to reward the teams who work within what they have constructed and come out un-beaten. They shouldn't have a system which doesn't encourage inter-conference play between the best teams but does allow them each to play "The Little Sisters Of The Poor" without criticism or some type of penalty.
Right now, like it or not, all two loss teams should be eliminated for consideration of the top four spots. Undefeated teams should be in and what's left is a decision between one loss teams, no conference preference because anybody thinks that conference is better. They have all proven themselves through the course of the season to be equally good and bad. The only thing that really matters now is the record.
Bama is out of it, we're not good enough this year to be there. It would not shock me if we lost to Auburn and our bowl game. Some say we're 2 plays away from being undefeated. I say we're 2 plays away from having 4 losses, at Texas and at Texas AM.
I think OSU and Georgia are a lock.
TCU, USC and Clemson have 2 more tough games each.
....and Georgia and OSU can be beat, just ask Kentucky and Maryland......

Agree that no one deserves it this year, but UM over Bama would be a joke. Look at Me-chickens schedule.
UT has an embarrassing away loss.
Bama doesn’t.
Bama doesn’t deserve it, but neither do the other teams either.
If Bo Nix is healthy, USC won't get past Oregon if Oregon can get by the Beavs (again needs Bo Nix to be healthy) next week to be in the Pac-12 championship. Although whomever wins Pac-12 should be in but politics will keep them out . They are certainly better than an undefeated Horned Frogs team, either of them................ But the Kool-Aid NCAAF drinkers are only keen on Pac-12 if it is UClaw or Troy, the big market teams. Oregon is one sprained ankle from being 10-1 and if Bo Nix is healthy they are the best team in the Pac-12, now that they are gelling with their new coach and system.
This is why there is a need to expand to 8, to be inclusive of all power 5 conferences, at least 1 or 2 lesser conf each year, and let the chips fall where they may. Stop putting in SEC teams that can't win their conference.......
6 teams from the Pac-12 are ranked in the top 25 right now - Ducks (10), Beavers (23), UDub (12), UClaw (17), Troy (5), and Utes (14), that shows just how tough the Pac-12 is in the upper half even tho' these 6 teams are acquiring loses by beating each other so no one gets to rise to the top 4 - but showing how close they are to each other in terms of quality. No other conference has that many ranked. SEC is closest with 5. But hey, let's just keep putting 2 SEC teams in the playoffs each year because of market forces, LOL.

Would need a 8 car pile up on I 80 like @Goldenage said in order for that to happen, we almost had it yesterday. Hard to believe but it wasn't that far away from 2-3-4-5 all losing and not even Georgia had an easy game. That would have been unprecedented.
If Michigan beats Ohio State in a close game both teams could get in. But not the other way around because Michigans non conference schedule was a joke.
Ohio State is the only team to win every game by double digits.

I wouldn't want to be in their seats come voting time after the conference championships. My hunch is that there will be three clear choices for 1-2-3 and a logjam of about five teams with legitimate claims to spot number four.

Just to assist with the history with the previous post, Brady (Michigan) lost to Illinois in 1999 35-29- Illinois was behind 27-7 mid way through the third quarter and staged one of the most memorable 4 quarter comebacks in Conference history. Sadly Illinois QB Kurt Kittner who went on to have an impressive career at Illinois had zero support in his senior year for the Heisman. I suppose that's the way it is...
Edited to add I believe Kittner was a sophomore in '99 and was the Illini QB when they last won an outright Big Ten Championship-

My rankings of the top 5 conferences. Just to be clear, my view extends from the top to the bottom. So it really not about the top team but more of a measurement of the path the top team has to get to the top spot.
SEC- I think the first spot is clear and should not be in dispute
PAC 10- So the next 4 are though, close and in dispute. I have the PAC 10 second
BIG 10 - if we looked solely at defense, I would have the Big 10 second-easily but too many traditional powers in the conference are just not meeting expectations this season.
BIG 8/12
ACC
4 and 5 were the toughest and I think there are very persuasive arguments to be made in favor of the other.

Using that logic Michigan should be #2 and OSU #3
Reason:
OSU beat PSU 44-31
Michigan beat PSU 41-17
.
I know you must be kidding, because you should know better. Ohio State played Penn State on the road, while Michigan played them in Michigan. And Penn State was NOT their only common opponent. Everyone who follows college football, except for the people who wear sec goggles, have known for years that the polls are rigged for the southern teams.
--- LSU beat Alabama by one point in OT and is two spots ahead of them.
--- Tennessee beat Alabama by three points in regulation time and is three spots BEHIND them!!
I only use that as an example of the sometimes illogical method used to place these teams in order. There should be some way to do it besides a group of people who have to sit around and discuss which win is more important and why along with whatever their argument might be.
My solution is simple: the Division One teams which are perennial CFP wannabees need to eliminate games from their schedules against teams such as: Samford, Kent State, LA-Monroe, Austin Peay, Southern U, Ball State, Hawaii, Toledo and Central MI. That might help funding the athletic programs of those schools but it does little in helping determine who is the best team in the big picture. If teams are hesitant to schedule each other or even inter-conference then just play within the respective conferences. The commissioners of the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, etc. can make their schedules out so that the best teams are in their championship games and everyone should be happy.
Then it's up to the NCAA to fashion a playoff system that's inclusive rather the system now in place, one which is exclusive and leads to the same teams every year. Right now I see nine conferences plus independents that are CFP eligible. There are smart people in the NCAA offices, figure it out and fill in the open spots for a "Sweet Sixteen" type of playoff. If each conference plays a 10 game schedule with a championship there will be plenty of time and teams won't be "over-played" which is always the excuse. A bonus would be stopping teams from the Big 12 which want to join the Big 10 because they'll think they might get a playoff spot. It'll also make stubborn Independents like Notre Dame join a conference or be shut-out.
Maywood, you mentioned teams shouldn't schedule Toledo or Central MI. There have been football teams from the MAC Conference who have beaten both teams from the SEC and the BIG 10 recently.
What would the chances be that if two sec teams were unbeaten this late in the season, that both those teams would be in the playoffs? So to be fair, they should put both Ohio State and Michigan in the final four spots regardless of the outcome of Saturdays game. Last year, Georgia got spanked by Alabama, yet the committee still put Georgia in the playoffs.
Sadly it it not funny when Wisconsin looses to WSU 17-14 at home in Madison. And to loose to ND 42-10 adds to how miserable the BIG10 conference is this season. I made a substantial effort to offer an unbias thought as to the conferences instead of the teams. There are just too many teams in the Big Ten that have missed the mark this season, I am a solid Big Ten fan and supporter but my objectivity is simply not going to be compromised... Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan State missed expectations, I expected more out of Northwestern and Indiana- didn't happen. You can shoot the messenger but you simply cannot hide from the reality that as of today- top to bottom- the Pac10 or 12 or whatever is politically correct- is better than the Big Ten. I doubt there are many more die hard Big Ten fans than me... Nothing would be more satisfying that to have the conference prove me wrong in the Bowl Season. Could it happen? I really hope so

Your last comment is just not helpful in terms of determining conference supremacy or a National Champion.
I am not even convinced or sold that the playoff system as it stands satisfies what needs to be satisfied to determine a single national champion. I have no problem with various polls determining multiple national champions, And it seems the best result is to go full circle back to what was done years ago. As an example, Illinois claims to share a national championship in 1951- And they deserved it.
Seems that what is being sought is just simply not representative of what transpired.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
@coinkat et al, you make some compelling points but the tendency from everyone is to argue who is best based on no real evidence, only that team A beat team B who beat team C who beat team A. It proves nothing and accomplishes even less.
While I agree with you in part, it really is not solely about who wins in as much as the significance associated with winning. Think about that for a moment,,, Purdue plays Indiana Saturday for the Old Oaken Bucket. Most folks outside Indiana and the Big Ten conference have no idea what that means or why it matters. And there are Hoosiers that will tell you it matters... as it did in 1967 when Johnny Pont's Indiana team completed the unthinkable. They won a share of the Big Ten Championship and played in the 1968 Rosebowl. They lost to USC but they still completed what was unimaginable- a Big Ten Championship which Indiana has not seen since 1945.
So with all the crap associated with conference expansions, we now have divisions within the BIG TEN and a Western division that had an off-year whereby the East seems to clearly dominant. So what happens if Nebraska should beat Iowa and Indiana beats Purdue? While H e l l has a better chance of freezing over, it does create the possibility of Illinois playing either Michigan or Ohio State in the BIG Ten championship game should Illinois beat NW on Saturday. Given how this season unfolded and if there is real justice, perhaps this outcome would be welcome... Will it happen? Well... I suspect I have a better chance at being struck by lightning

@coinkat et al, you make some compelling points but the tendency from everyone is to argue who is best based on no real evidence, only that team A beat team B who beat team C who beat team A. It proves nothing and accomplishes even less.
@Maywood
