    If truth be told ………..

Ohio State has shown some excellence to SEC fans.

I looked it up. Alabama 16 National Championships. OSU 8 National Championships. Historically Alabama is on the top level. OSU is one of many schools a step behind. Nothing wrong with that. It is good to be in the conversation nearly every year. If Alabama continues to be in the tournament perhaps they will catch the true King of college football with 18 National Championships............YALE

This is really rich, OSU used an "excuse" to explain why they WON!!! :D

No, no. Not why they won, it was how they barely won over NW.... :)

But they didn't "barely" win. Forget about total yards and all that stuff, Northwestern ran up and down the field but weren't able to get into the end zone or kick a field goal for the last 52 minutes of the game while Ohio State scored 21 points in that time.

Tom Landry once coined the phrase "Rubber Band defense" to describe the Browns, he said they bent but wouldn't break, they'd give you everything from the 20 to the 20 but that was it. Blanton Collier took it as it was intended, a compliment. This was one of those kind of games, giving up yardage but no points.

Did I mention how bad the weather was??? :p

Now, if we look a little farther south where the weather was quite nice we see a different result. Maybe you can look in the excuse file and come up with something.

It looks like the "committee" is still holding out hope to sneak Tennessee into the 4th spot, the concept of having four teams from four conferences is still beyond their understanding. Now that Clemson has managed to eliminate themselves from contention the choice comes down to a rematch between Georgia/Tennessee or Georgia/Oregon. I really doubt the loser of Ohio State vs. Michigan will be able to hang onto the 4th spot unless that game is an absolute barn-burning slugfest. Even if that were to happen the possibility of a rematch between those two teams would exist.

    1. Georgia (9-0.
    2. Ohio State (9-0).
    3. Michigan (9-0).
    4. TCU (9-0).
    5. Tennessee (8-1).
    6. Oregon (8-1).
    7. LSU (7-2).
    8. USC (8-1).
    9. Alabama (7-2).
    10. Clemson (8-1).
  • BullsitterBullsitter Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

I thought they were supposed to pick the 4 best teams regardless of conferences.
I think the Committee has it right. Lot of football left to play.

Picking the 4 best teams never works because its always going to be subjective. That's why it needs to be ''most deserving.'' like a conference champ.

As for National Championships, Ohio State would easily have 14-16 if the Rose Bowl would've been played on a neutral field instead of in California. Case in point 1975 and 1979. In 1975, Ohio State was undefeated and ranked #1 when they faced a 2 loss UCLA in the Rose Bowl. If Ohio State wins, Woody Hayes wins his 6th National title. Instead, UCLA pulled off the upset. During the regular season that year, Ohio State beat UCLA by three touchdowns. That game was played in Los Angeles. Its hard to beat the same team twice in the same year, just ask Auburn(2017) and Alabama(2021).

If I remember correctly in 1975 UCLA outplayed the Buckeyes. You would have thought they were #1. In 1979 USC was a heavy favorite. OSU played a tremendous game with a lot of heart only to lose in the last minute.

1979 USC was not the heavy favorite. Buckeyes were ranked #1, USC was #2. USC might have been a slight favorite because it was played in their backyard.

The Alabama- Rice rivalry- Just to add a little detail, the first meeting was in the 1954 Cotton Bowl. Rice finished the season with a top ten ranking. Rice finished 6th in the final poll (11-30-1953) edging out Illinois and JC Caroline who basically deserved the Heisman Trophy . It really is even easier to explain 1955 and 1956... Alabama was terrible both seasons as that was before Bear Bryant and Forest Gump. Rice has something to be thankful for... their ADs overtime time never scheduled Alabama again. Smart... very smart.

And for those of you that are bullish on Yale, please refrain from looking at the number of National championships claimed by Princeton. I would not what to be responsible for that debate in the event it got "out of control".

Edited to fix typo- corrected to read 11-30-1953 instead of 11-3-1953

I remember the announcer saying it was remarkable that the number one team was a seven point underdog.

Am I wrong in assuming that if everyone wins out it’s

    1- G vs OS/M winner

    and

    2- UT vs. TCU

    In the playoff ?

Ducks are slowly working their way up to #4. They have to win out to make it, but if they do, they will show exactly what I have said - game 1 was a fluke - new coach, new system, playing probably the best team in the nation and thus out of sync. We will see if they can run the table, but I think they are likely better than TCU or Tenn, but it is up to them to now show it. Could be #3 if they win out.

TCU has not really played a top notch team, Texas is not bad, so it is possible, but that is why they play, should be close either way...........

I wouldn't bet money on Texas (-7), but I think they have a good shot at winning, so I picked them.

I have #9 Bama beating #11 Ole Miss but not covering the spread (-12).

I have #2 OSU beating #87 ranked Indiana but not covering the spread (-40) because it will be windy and snowing.

I wonder what Georgia and the entire SEC would do if they had to play in snow, that would be interesting. Let's move the Bowl games up North for a few years, the fans will still show up. :p

    Standing Room Only!!

I really don't expect snow today but the forecast tomorrow in NEOhio is 4-5 inches. Back in 1996 we got hammered in early November with about 50" during a 12 hour period, just south of us they got about 70". Never saw anything like it.

OJ going from uSC to Buffalo, or Csonka from Syracuse to Miami, or Bradshaw going from La to Pittsburgh all didn’t matter.

There's one good reason to play bowl games in the south.

    Cold and snow.

Keep your eye on the Oregon game today.

They’ve struggled against both Washington teams this year and last year.

    I'm watching
    Morning = LSU vs Arky
    Afternoon = Bama vs Miss
Evening = TCU vs Texas, Auburn vs AM

    Louisville might sneak by Clemson.

Playing football in the cold, snowy weather really has nothing to do with how it affects individual players. It is all about the way it affects the game itself and what all the players are able to do. If you don't understand that you're either naive or just being difficult. That's why teams carry along different sets of shoes/cleats when they play on cold, frozen fields and why the visiting team(if you watch pre-game work-outs like I used to do in Cleveland) always checks all areas of the field. There are soft spots, wet spots and places where the turf isn't as firm as the rest of the field. A totally frozen field can be just as bad, the wrong shoes and it can be tough. It explains why the term "mudder" is in football vernacular for guys who are just better on a sloppy field.

It's also why they play the "big games" where the weather is perfect and why I hate that.

It's also why the Packers beat the Cowboys in the "Ice Bowl" in 1967.

Weather and playing conditions are a crucial factor in games......................until the Championship is on the line. I have always thought that is the worst aspect of the Super Bowl era, the absence of Home Field advantage.

Ohio State 28 - Indiana 7 at the half......................Miyan Williams 15 carries for 147 yards and one TD looks to be out for the game with a right knee or ankle injury, he walked off the field but was carted to the locker room. That means Ohio State is down to their only remaining RB, Dallan Hayden, a freshman. TreVyon Henderson better heal up quickly or the Buckeyes will be pretty one dimensional.

An aside to @Bullsitter --- not an Excuse, just the facts.

Yeah, I saw that, not good.

  • MaywoodMaywood Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭✭✭

After thinking that Williams might rush for 200 yards I now wonder if he'll play again this year. Ohio State now looks like they might try to "feed" Hayden as much as they can to see what he can do. I wonder if they have anyone else at RB. Unlike the NFL where a team can sign someone after a game or move someone onto the roster these College teams are stuck.

If they're down to just Hayden I think Stroud better strap it down and get ready to rumble for the next two games.

    4 playoff spots

    Georgia
    OSU/MICH winner
    TCU (IF they win out)

For the final spot the committee might have to pick between a one loss conference champ Clemson and a one loss Tennessee who will be sitting at home during conference championship week. IF USC wins out they will have a strong case as a one loss pac 12 champ because their remaining schedule is tough with UCLA and Notre Dame on their remaining schedule. And then the conference championship game. So, it will be a tough task to win all three games.

The committee sees that UT is 2-0 against Top 10 teams that aren’t named Georgia. Plus they absolutely crushed the #6 team in the rankings.

Committee also sees that tOSU, Michigan, TCU, and others haven’t even played a Top 10 team all year.

Anyone with half a brain knows an 11-1 UT team is in.

--- I know that nobody thinks so or is willing to say as much, but what happens to the rankings if LSU beats Georgia in the SEC Championship game??
--- What happens if Ohio State and Michigan play some sort of a barn-burner 50-48 game??
