I graded it MS-62. It’s in Mint State, but the obverse is pretty chippy. The reverse is better, but that can’t pull it up, and reverse is usually better any way. Even the reverse has the look of a less than Choice Unc. coin.

Not sure how bad the hit by the lips will affect the grade, but I would say a good coin other than that. Cheers, RickO
I think the coin grades better than good.

Probably not, but I'll give it a shot. It looks pretty clean with fairly strong luster and good color except for that lip cut and some scruffiness in the obverse fields, so I'm going to say 64.

If you guess wrong, don't feel bad. Apparently CAC also disagrees with the assigned grade.

That is a crazy high grade for that coin.
Well I did keep the number out of my post. I guessed and then checked. Then I went to the safe and found 5 Half Eagles I want Fairmont Collection to submit for me.
In the old days that was called a "coffin coin" because that slab will be that coin's final resting place.

I happened to lot view that coin. It is a coin with nice luster and pretty minimal marks other than the prominent one near the nose. My guess is that PCGS decided that it was in the planchet; otherwise that grade is hard to agree with.
Fairmont hoard has a lot of nice coins in the 55-62 range (as long as you don't mind the slight to medium dirt that I understand is common in coins that have come back from European vaults).

Hmmmm... interesting. I guess it depends upon which photo you're basing the decision on. I interpreted the breaks in luster (nose, eyebrow, hair, and Liberty's hairlip) and numerous contact marks (obverse field) in the first image to be more reflective of an AU coin. I interpreted the other photos as lighting seeking to hide what was revealed on the first image...

I left the cert number in so that way people can see what pcgs called it- however, I ask that you do not spoil the results/fun
I guessed 63 mostly due to the divot above the lip.
I like it but will go MS 62/3
Hoard the keys.
Nice Gold!

I voted for the most dreaded grade in the game, the ms 62.

While I wouldn’t grade it that high, I’m going to guess the coin graded 63+. Now, I’m going to go look it up.

I did my grade in the voting. I looked up the cert just now and I’ll just say that, by the picture only, I don’t have the same grade as the holder.
I never get the grade right from photos.
Once again, my estimate is wrong. LOL

CAN YOU GRADE THIS COIN FROM THE PICTURE???
Probably not, but I'll give it a shot. It looks pretty clean with fairly strong luster and good color except for that lip cut and some scruffiness in the obverse fields, so I'm going to say 64.

Yes I can grade this coin from the photos, now if that matches what PCGS said is another mater.

The Guess The Grade Grading Service does not have a clear choice
No bell curve. We’ve got a rectangle.
I’m interested in what the OP thinks it grades out as
63 was my choice. Too many nicks and scars on the obverse and reverse for a higher grade.

I voted MS63.
My personal grade is MS63 unless it looks way better in hand.
64 to me, that lip thingy must be a die defect, doesn't look like man made to me. Or is it?
I like it, watch it will grade either 62 or 66
I graded it 63 and now I'm also looking it up.

Darn. I guess I can't grade from photos. I have more comments but I don't want to mess up the game.
That defect doesn’t look mint-made to me.

Thanks Mark, then it's likely not.
i was going to grade it ms63+ with a generous bump to ms64.
Clearly the grading services felt differently.
It's a head scratcher to say the least. I was at 62
Mechanical error?
I am at 60
I cast my vote and am shocked at the actual grade!
That is a crazy high grade for that coin.

Looks a 62 with a 63 on a good day! A bit surprised for sure........

I guessed 63, due to the obv. baggies
I just can’t get past the number of small marks all over the obverse
And what about the reverse on both sides of the mint mark. Those are not the fields of a coin of that grade.

62 and I'm basing that on my 85-S that is in a 64 holder.
Wild guess....AU 58...In my opinion, this coin has seen quite a bid of circulation.
I guessed 64, as it looks like mine:

My guess is that it’s not the OP’s coin, but rather, just a coin posted by the OP - two very different things.😉
