When I saw the obverse scrolling down, I thought it might be a handy type of coin. Once I saw the reverse, however, I drew a blank on what it might be.

Here's something I have sitting around. I got it a while ago in trade. It's pretty cool, but I really have no interest in collecting these. Pix courtesy Barberkeys...
Another newp purchased this afternoon. The 1912-P Quarter Eagle is a semi-scarcer date. This one is BU + (in a raw state) and then some. I like it! I will be sending it off to our hosts soon.

I see some light wear on the cheek bone so it may come back as an AU58. It's still a very nice coin that I wouldn't mind owning.

I am assembling a date set of these, AU55-58 from 1908 thru 1915 and Mint State 63-64 from 1925 thru 1929. That one would fit in well in my set, tho I like 'em with a little color. Here is the one I have-AU55-

Might be wear. Might be a weaker strike which is a regular occurrence for 1912 as well, Not seeing a luster break when rotating in the light. Definitely borderline!
@PerryHall
Let me show you what I feel to be an example and I probably have shared the 1914-D before. I just learned our hosts grade it MS64+ (#43269177 and so new the TrueView hasn't quite come out yet). It was through the conservation process here in the last couple of weeks. The 1912 came from the exact same source and previous collection. Now all coins are different but I see the cheek almost similar here with the 1912 cheek not as struck up (or whatever because of being incuse). The 1912 I see less feather definition - and a viewer might (probably) be right on that being wear. I bought this 1914-D at a full price $25 more than AU58 level... so I am risking it grabbing the 1912 and other quarter eagles if getting AU58's perhaps but the 1914-D was not AU. I think this is all very fascinating and I appreciate the debate! I am always learning. 1914-D $2.50 Indian Gold PCGS MS64+ (image before conservation) is flashier and better struck-up on the obverse. Compare vs. the 1912-P with light yellow gold coloration and grainy surfaces which might be an AU58 but I grade as an MS62 or thereabouts (I would see wear on the reverse?). Fuljenz/Winter book for the 1912 states "On the obverse, there may be some weakness at the center":

Purchased these two cool Hong Kong ingots off of lay-a-way for $125. each in December 1990 ($250. total). One similar ingot, it seems, had an auction result earlier this year for $372 in July at Heritage. "British Colony. Xiangxin Gold Shop Xianggang Yintao Ingot of 1 Tael ND (c. 1960's)".

Darrell, Believe it or not. I had it sent in for conservation first. I expect one of two outcomes: either it was (1) declined for a process to conserve and sent for grading or (2) it was conserved but the process didn't work well to remove green crud.

I think it is likely that the green stuff is wax from an old leather pouch, not PVC. If it is wax, a solvent such as lacquer thinner would take it right off.

You know, I got a number of coins out of this deal. I have a 1907-P Quarter Eagle also with the same green nodule issues... Where I noticed it with the 1897, I missed the 1907 $2.50 only after sending in the coins. I wonder what they will feel about that one as well. On the 1897 $2.50, they didn't send me any notes on what they did other than a cost invoice where they put on an Evaluation fee of $10. that's it.

You should see the green nodule(s) on the Obverse just above the back side of the hair, hair bun.

Yours doesn't have the inscription on the reverse.
Looks like a medal blank that can be repurposed as needed.

I like this coin when I bought it raw. I thought it would grade but it came back in an AU detail holder. Still not a bad 11-S!
I think this 1908-S Indian Cent has a healthy look!
