February pickups 2021

Now home from Newport Beach, I’m kicking off this months pickup thread with an item that slips nicely into my collection. It took some time to find it, some time to ID it and some time to submit the research. The end result is a beautiful piece that can be described with four wonderful words:

First graded, Mickey Mantle.

Let’s see what the good folks of CU landed this month!!!!

Curious about the rare, mysterious and beautiful 1951 Wheaties Premium Photos?

Excited about this pick-up. Was browsing Bench RCs when it was listed and I moved quickly to make a deal with the seller before someone else saw the card and pulled the trigger.

I have a few copies of this card and yours looks short, left to right. You may want to check this against another card when you get it in hand. I hope I'm wrong.

It's good, I think. I measured with a digital caliper and I've held it up to other 1968s that I have slabbed and it is actually slightly larger than a few of those, for what it's worth.

'tne' variation to boot, nice pickup.

Investor lots seem to be a thing.
Thought it would be fun to try instead of buying 0.1928 shares of GOOG (Google doesn't pay a dividend neither)
    In at $74 a Maddux share. Trending @ $100

Please point out the variation. I tried to Google but no luck. Thanks.

First line of text under Johnny on the back, 'tne Reds' vs. 'the Reds'. PSA only recently started recognizing, so the Pop Report is pretty skewed, but I've seen estimates of 1/3 'tne' vs 2/3 'the'.

ETA: There was a thread several years back on N54 discussing it: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=199836

@Chicago1976 awesome Blanda. Is your Bears HOF set a registry set? If so, I’d love a link to check it out. I’m doing the same for the Patriots.

Thanks DBesse27. It is not a registry set. Just something my son and I are attempting. Early stages, may post it at some point.

The Catfish RC got me "hooked" on vintage rookies back in '86.
Oldest card in my kid collection. 1965, wow that's old!

MJ rookie, baseball style. His “career” only lasted about a year. For picking it up as late as he did, I was impressed.

Junk wax has some value. I think we need to coin a new phrase. Someone smarter than me should think of one.

    Love the JR!

    Rookie card era. ;)
Fun times chasing all the good rookies.
Was cut & dry what the RCs were.
I bailed out of the hobby around '97/'98, was getting too confusing what to collect.

Nice pick up. I hope he signs with Bayern in a few years. Speaking of Bayern, just picked up this true rookie. Released a few years before his 2007 panini sticker.
