I like the design and the toning! Am a fan of President/General US Grant after reading Ron Chernow's book.
Sadly, the coin turned out to be excessively cleaned and will be returned. The eBay seller shot the photo so as to hide evidence of cleaning. I was disappointed and angry at the seller.

do you or anyone else know this piece? i'm not even close to an authority on early private gold issues but that doesn't even look remotely familiar.
That's a Baldwin and Company $10 gold coin. Go to the PCGS Coin Facts web site (Territorial, California Gold) and you'll find a lot of information about this coin.

Bought the 37 because it is about as mark free as the come and it meets my requirements. Bought the 1833 half to finish my year set of 1833. 1/2 cent, cent, half dime, dime, quarter, and now the half.
Found these in a little mom and pop. Just getting into the game, so I haven't attributed it yet. Actually found a few nice looking ones for cheap (I think). Honestly, I almost felt bad

I hope this Midway coin has Ensign George Gay bobbing up and down while cheering US dive bombers.

I enjoyed perusing the catalog.
It was like a pre Red Book creation.
It covered California, Carolina, and private gold.
If I can get to the office, I will research his catalog to see what I can find.

Kennedys are my quest...
Should be here tomorrow and I didn't really need it, but the price was right.
Saw a little something, something and clicked BIN... then realized after the fact it is a minor variety.
All good... neat little variety (009) and I got a proof quarter to substitute.
Keep grinding for the next big score.

I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this NEWP, which arrived today. As you can tell - it's a BIG coin!
It's a 1 1/2 Taler from 1655, weighing 43 grams and 55mm in diameter - a Morgan dollar weighs "only" 26.7 grams, and is about 38mm!
My current "Box of 20"
