Over a barrel - There was a time when a drowning person was
placed face down over a barrel and rolled back and forth to force
the water from their lungs. It rarely worked. Hence, if you are over
a barrel, you are in serious trouble.
Hogwash - Steamboats carried both people and animals.
Because pigs were particularly filthy they were washed before
being put on board. The mud and muck washed off a pig was
considered stinky, useless hogwash.
Barging in - This one also comes from steamboats on the
Mississippi: Heavy freight was transported on large barges
pushed by steamboats. These barges were difficult to control and
would often slam into piers and other boats. This was referred to
as barging in.
Posh (courtesy of Steve Johnson) - On England–India sea
voyages this acronym was used to find staterooms with morning
sun: Port side when Outward bound, and Starboard when
Homeward bound. The best cabins were considered posh
