I had my popcorn, beer, and everything ready last night, expecting a dogfight. Instead, I got a 45-6 thumping. I ended up watching Green Acres. It's hard to get pumped up watching a pig flirt with a Bassett Hound.

The game between Baltimore and San Francisco should be quite interesting. The Ravins look like world beaters right now.

It’s the NFL. Someone will figure him out. The Chargers did last year by putting safeties as outside linebackers. The 49ers will push big time in the middle. Problem is this year they have Ingram. He’s a monster and safeties don’t match up well against him. He will take a hit eventually. Just a matter of time someone stands him up and a 300 lber comes barreling in. Just a matter of time.

I am willing to bet that Belichick will find a way to contain D Jax if they get him in the playoffs. Not saying we will win but I feel he they will be more prepared for him the second time around

New England did a fair job the first time, holding Jackson to 163 yards passing and 61 yards rushing. Problem is that Mark Ingram and Gus Edwards had another 140 yards. So they contained Jackson to a degree but still got torched, giving up 37 points. I never bet against Belichick but...

Well I guess I'm done posting. For some reason my posts are all double spaced now
even my old ones which used to be single spaced have now morphed into double spacers.
The monster's loose and I don't know how to contain it, but I'll be damned if I'm going to keep feeding it.

I like Lamar Jackson, he just has the misfortune to play for Satan's franchise.

Well, we all know the season starts over in the playoffs, and if Baltimore plays New England again I think Bill Belichick will be ready. He knows how to make adjustments, and he is the ultimate chess master, so I wouldn't bet against him. Lamar Jackson is only one player. They'll figure out his kryptonite eventually. You better believe Belichick will be doing some studying.

He couldn’t stop Nick Foles in the Super Bowl, in fact he couldn’t even contain him but this Patriots D is way better. But D Jax is way better than Foles too, it will be interesting

Yes, it will be very interesting. I remember watching Jackson at Louisville and thinking, there's no way he'll make it in the NFL. He surprised me though. The Patriots are good at finding ways to win though, especially if Baltimore has to travel to Foxboro. That is a tough place to play at. We will see though, still a lot of football to be played.

Interesting, Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison are calling the game on NBC, instead of Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth. Now don't get me wrong, I love me some Al Michaels, but he does remind me of dracula.

Josh Shaw has been suspended through at least the end of the 2020 season for... gambling. First NFL gambling suspension since 1983.

At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances. If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football."

The news article i read didn't say how the NFL found out about it, or whether or not it was done legally or thru illegal bookies.

In any event, the NFL just sent a strong message to everyone in their league that if you do it, no matter if it's legal or not, the hammer is going to come down.

Why was it even an option to impose anything other than a lifetime ban? I don't know what it was that came down, but it wasn't a hammer.

This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

Losing a year's pay and more is a hammer, that's not debatable.

Just a hunch that he may have made the wagers thru legal bookies available now in a number of states. Perhaps the player may have figured it was okay to do that since it was legal? Not lifetime ban worthy in my opinion.

I'm more curious as to how the NFL found out about it? Somebody ratted him out, that's for sure.

On the Josh Shaw suspension, via sources close to him: Shaw went to a Vegas casino this fall with buddies from HS. He’s on IR & hasn’t been around the team since preseason. Shaw placed sports bets for the 1st time based on misinterpreted understanding of the Supreme Court ruling

I would have to think that in the next team meeting of every NFL team, that gambling will be the first thing discussed by the head coach. The "discussion" will probably last less than a minute because likely every NFL player has already heard about this.

Maybe the signs are there in NFL locker rooms but everyone knows it.

    https://www.si.com/nfl/2015/05/12/si-vault-paul-hornung-alex-karras-pete-rozelle

SI Vault: Players are not just people: The NFL suspends its 'Golden Boy'

Think Tom Brady's punishment was harsh? In 1963, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle suspended two of the league's biggest stars, including "Golden Boy" running back Paul Hornung of the champion Green Bay Packers, for the entire season. This SI Vault story explains why.

.....Alvin (Pete) Rozelle, the commissioner of the National Football League, does not seem to fit this string-dance pattern. He has just suspended Paul Hornung of the Green Bay Packers, the biggest star in pro football, and Alex Karras, All-Pro tackle who was the key to the Detroit Lions' superb defense; he has fined five other Lions, as well, all for betting on football. He took this action without accepting any advice or pressure from the club owners who elected him. In fact, he says he did not advise the owners of his action until just before the news was released.

....."I thought about it at length," he said. "The maximum penalty for a player would be suspension for life. That would be for failure to report a bribe attempt or for trying to shave points. This sport has grown so quickly and gained so much of the approval of the American public that the only way it can be hurt is through gambling. I considered this in reaching my decision. I also took into account that the violations of Hornung and Karras were continuing, not casual. They were continuing, flagrant and increasing. Both players had been informed over and over of the league rule on gambling; the rule is posted in every clubhouse in the league, as well. Yet they continued to gamble. I could only exact from them the most severe penalty short of banishment for life."

Even though this news story was a long time ago, in my opinion, the recent punishment to this player was probably influenced by the punitive action handed out to Hornung and Karras.

I'm looking forward to some good NFL action today. I'll be keeping a close eye on the Ravens vs 49ers matchup. It should be a slugfest. It will be action packed. Although it won't be as action packed as "Fly Hard 2".

Yes, when the offense breaks down and can’t control the ball for a significant number of minutes, the defense breaks down. An extreme example of that was the Philadelphia Eagles under Chip Kelly.
