March Pickups - 2019

While this card is neither super rare or super valuable, it is very aesthetically pleasing and quite informational. At about 6 x 9 in size, these beautiful black and white premiums feature one of the best ‘card backs’ ever produced. These cards were issued to coincide with a radio program about the life and times and triumphs of baseball’s biggest ever star, which would be broadcast, in part, as a tribute to the icon who was gravely ill and who would sadly only be around for less than a year after its airing.

Early Topps chrome refractors are always tough...this beauty came in the mail today...looks like a solid 9!

Pretty sure some of these were posted elsewhere before (another message board) but since I'm scanning new stuff figured I'd post the new stuff with updated scans of the other 3

A few early Todd Helton cards. Thrilled with the 9 on the Playoff POG those cards are poorly produced .

And for those unfamiliar with the item below-- there were "supposedly" just 10 sets available for redemption. I know of 4 that were redeemed ( provable redemption that is )-- the other 6 I haven't heard about they may have all been redeemed the info about who hit them or proof of their redemption just haven't hit hobby channels.

    My Todd Heltons slabbed

A pic of the box they came out of

It's funny how things work out. Helton was a QB at Tennessee. There was a guy named Peyton Manning on the team also.

    DM23HOF...

That is a beautiful card...congrats on the pickup!

On high profile cards...PSA seems to have a stricter grading standard. Also... grading standards have evolved over the years to the point that some copies are like comparing apples to oranges. Eye appeal seems to be more important today than in the past when grading a card. In addition...there is a finer grading scale with the 1/2 point grade available today at the grader's discretion that wasn't there early on...allowing the grader to be more critical when assessing a card's grade.

For me...it is centering, coloration, registration then corners in order of importance.

Brand new Heritage pickup. Sure looks like a 9 to me in hand right now. Can't believe how harsh they are on Mantles these days, especially looking at all the low eye appeal 8.5s and 9s from yesteryear on VCP.

I once heard that when you see a card that well centered and sharp that there’s s a decent chance (33%ish) that it’s originated from a ‘presentation’ sets of old.

    Any chance you’d know?

That card is just sick. Crazy nice.

Thx, fellas. Not sure if it came from a presentation or if those sets were done in that year. Even more unsure why it didn't get that .5 love on its Judgement Day, lol. Certainly deserving!

You’re in the sweet spot: 1959-1963.

Obviously the centering of the cut is outstanding. Does it seem ‘extra’ glossy? Probably best if you hold along side another ‘59 card. The difference is not unlike (but not exactly) like Topps to Topps Tiffany. They just look (and feel) better.
I’m just the curious type; feel free to ignore. Great pickup, once again.

@stwainfan .... it should be interesting to see him leading off this season as Betts dropping to 2nd for production purposes....Benintendi going to have to up his hit totals to be a HOF contender..... leading off not sure he can drive in enough to be a Stallion. 200 hits would be the route and perhaps a .310 average or better.

The team has a good lineup. I am not sure everyone will be a productive as last year. As a team overall I don't expect as many wins this year. It's hard to keep up last years pace.

I thought the crowd was pretty strong on Friday night. Your usual mix of dealers with raw and graded. Good mix of modern and vintage. As usual prices are all over the place. Not so sure on the modern stuff as that’s not what I’m into. Tons of T206’s. Felt like even more than usual which is due to the recent pricing run up I assume. Overall I enjoyed walking around and looking at everyone’s material. The upcoming REA auction is going to be very nice.

Are you going to have it put in a PSA holder?

    Looks in superb shape.

Great looking Mantle Matt, I think it’s in an 8 holder because of the print snow in the background as well as some of lower red border, but you can’t find a better centered then that card. Congrats on the pickup.

More recent slabs in . Not sure what they saw in the Prior to take it down from Mint.
Getting an 8 on any Fleer , Topps or UD jersey / bat piece is normal = par for the course

I could see the '59 Mantle in an 8.5 holder due to centering and corners...but not a 9 due to coloration and as mentioned print snow in background as well as registration being slightly off.

Well, I'm getting after it with this set now! And all I can say is this set sure does have some great components and a lot of star power. Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb, Red Ruffing, Carl Hubbell, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, the 'real' Stan Musial rookie card and a host of other Hall of Famers reside within this set and with the date of 1946 it's in that sweet spot of post war and pre Topps. I think there's a lot of great cards from that specific era and this card is of one of those players who I think just missed out on legendary cardboard status due in some ways to a lack of issuance. He missed the Topps affiliation by just one year, after all. But who needs Topps when you've got obscure Cuban chocolatiers, am I right?!?
