Re: What is your favorite coin in your collection?
Just to have held a coin like this from the very early years of the new Mint.

I have also started a date set of half dimes. I have a few more years added with the general theme of attractive toning. I love how there is a predominance of blue toning across the set so far!

Re: Liberty Seated Discussion Board
Still my favorite series for its longevity and myriad of mintages from low to high and price points that don't seem to matter, plus the general beauty the series retains across all grades.

OK... hypothetical... I live in Maryland. Let's say I buy a coin for $700. I own it for a little while and then sell it for $600... am I reporting $600 profit on a 1099, or is this a $100 loss?
Hobbyists can't deduct losses, but you do have to report gains. That's one of the things that makes the 1099Ks so insidious. They put you on the map and you have to report income that may not even be taxable. And if you don't have receipts from when you bought the item you might be up a creek when you claim that you didn't make a profit when you sold it. It puts a target on your back.

Re: What is your favorite coin in your collection?
This one is close, not many coins can say they were the only ones minted out of a specific metal for circulation.

Beautiful day here. Relaxing with my book this morning on the porch with a cappuccino. Had to work last night, so this is my independence day!
By the way, this book on Shiloh by Winston Groom is a fantastic read. Last week, I got to the battlefield for the first time, and it was an amazing, somber experience.
And here's a civil war token to keep the thread rolling:
Happy Saturday, all! Stay caffeinated
Happy Saturday Everyone!
Visiting that Battlefield is on my bucket list... had a couple ancestors that fought there on the 2nd day under Buell.
A couple of recent acquisitions:

One of my favorite series for its beauty and vast varieties.
1887-S 10C F-119 MPD
According to Fortin; Comments: Obverse 18 can be easily diagnosed by an extra 1 digit punch in the shield. The flag of a 1 digit is clearly visible between shield lines #8 and #9.

I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable 4th, however you celebrated.
Last night somewhere over 70,000 people descended on my sleepy little town on the edge of the world of less than 7,000, and turned about 7 miles of beach into what might look like the longest tailgate for an ocean party ever. Every year I'm told.
The weather was gorgeous, and the sunset was sublime.
We stayed out for a while, but snuck back before the mass exodus and sipped drinks on the back deck, watching the pulsing glow and listening to the mayhem. The smoke wafting away from the beach even a good half mile back was pretty intense.
Today the cleanup starts.

Here's a coin with some rainbow color and a smoky skin, which is fitting after all of that I suppose
