JMW has been working on his set of Half Dollars without a lot of fan-fare.
He's been quietly assembling one of the nicest VF / XF sets in the country.

His duplicate set is nothing to sneeze at either.

Looking forward to an up close inspection this May when the
ANA convention is in Denver.

I'm waiting for JMW to start his AU 58 set, so he starts selling
off the XF's.

I just called the dealer who had this coin and asked if they had received my check -
as I have not heard back from them as to a shipping date.

Well, the dealer was a bit tounge tied - and very apologetic -
but the coin was a consigned coin [ which I knew because he
wouldn't budge on the price before when asked ], and the consignor
decided he didn't want to sell the coin any longer.

The dealer said he put my check back into the mail; well, I am far from
speechless, but its out of my hands. All I mentioned was that I had wished
he had called me as well. Sending the check back was the right thing to do,
however, I feel a phone call should have been in order as well.

This sort of reminds me of the Thread circulating around on the Forum about
a deal gone south becuase some kid's Father wanted the coin back. Then the
kid has the same coin back on eBay for more money.

My coin is still on the dealer's web site - but - I am sure that he just hasn't had
a chance to remove it ... that's perfectly understandable.

I have bought a few coins from this dealer - and he is a good guy. Its his customer
who needs a reality slap. Why consign to a dealer - and then change your mind after
the dealer has taken the time to image the coin and post it to his web site ?

I'd laugh like "Heck" if its the same consignor as the kid in the Sale Gone Wrong Thread.

Just ranting... continue on in your quests for the Ultimate Barber Halves [ Quarters and Dimes too !! ]

HEY! I'm still a newbie! But you're right...the giants of this hobby make it look easy to grab those awesome 02-S, 01-S, 93-S, 05-O...and many other delectable coins! It's actually very time consuming and frustrating...but rewarding also when you're able to "score" that coin that catches your eye. Guess that's what makes this endeavor so enjoyable...so for us "newbies" we'll just keep watching and learning.

Stunning 1914-S, JMW. That is truly a pretty coin.

Many of our fellow Barberphiles are aware that I had perhaps 110-120 original VF-EF Barber half dollars that were sold off largely in three groups starting around 2006. It had taken me years to find and buy all of those coins. The set was complete in that grade range, if I recall correctly, except for the 1893-S. Even after all that searching the best I could find for the 1893-S was an F15. Then, oddly enough, after selling off nearly every Barber half dollar that I had owned I came across the raw 1893-S that I have written about and shared in this thread at least twice. At this time I only own three Barber half dollars and I will show all three below with the TPG grade and the CAC opinion, too, for those who care. I apologize for the inconsistent style of image presentation. The 1892 and 1893-S weren't cropped, but the 1909 was cropped from the holder. The reason for the difference is that I had never thought I would list the 1892 or 1893-S on my site, but had purchased the 1909 with the intent of listing it and I always crop the images differently for my inventory. However, after I purchased the 1909 I began to realize how cool it was so it was tucked away into my collection.

I think it's a 30. One of the nicest 30's I have seen of that date.

Well, the Internet cable in my community is on the Fritz,

satellites whirling above me.

Well, I have submitted eight Halves in other TPG holders
and I received my grade this evening.

1895-P ex: ANACS 30 - Cross - PCGS 30
1896-S ex: ANACS 30 - Cross - PCGS 35 .....
1897-O ex: ANACS 15 - Cross - PCGS 15
1902-P ex: NGC 40 --- Cross - PCGS 40
1904-P ex: ANACS 35 - Cross - PCGS 30 ....
1906-P ex : NGC 15 ---Cross - PCGS 20.....
1908-P ex : ANACS 30 - Cross - PCGS 30
1913-S ex : NGC 12 ---Cross - PCGS 12

I have posted images of these coins before,
and I will edit this post at a later time when
I have full use of my lap top once again.

I'm very happy with the results. I am beyond
Estatic that the NGC coins were crossed and
that one actually upgraded.

See, buy the coin, and not the holder.

I sent them in the holders.

Some friends said I should crack them out
because they thought PCGS would automatically
either down grade them or "wouldn't cross them"
at any grade... Especially the NGC coins.

What can I say, the NGC coin holders just don't fit into those Blue Boxes
and I wanted everything in one holder.

I have 21 Halves coming from either PCGS or Stack's Bowers and I should
have close to the set I wanted when I started this set in Chicago.

Once I do some weeding, upgrading, and send the set to CAC , I'll
have this newer collection imaged.

Seems my friend, Dennis West, hit upon a very familiar subject, why are
most circulated 1897-O Halves so dark ? The 97-O posted by JMW is an
exception - it's considerably lighter than the norm. I assume it came out
of the Child Collection, but I can not attest to that. It's a great looking coin.
I'm still loving the 93-S that came out of Tyler's set.

Labelman87 and I spoke a few times today and he hasn't received his newps
from Stacks Bowers, and neither have I for that matter, although they did acknowledge
receiving my check last week. It seems as if we both agreed that the speed they use
processing orders doesn't hold a candle to how Heritage handles their customers.

As HRH says, I hope you're having Fun With Your Coins !!
