Amen to barberfanatic axioms. I did notice looking at the cac stickered quarters in Mike's BST thread that the ones that were not cac'd looked a tad less fetching than the stickered ones, in some cases, but I thought the idea was concurrance of technical grade moreso than eye appeal. Too many nice ones in that group to even name tho.
Also Arnie dropped a mess of PCGS halves on the bay yesterday and a few went INSTANTLY. There was a wide swing in the grading of 30 35 40 coins. Bothersome in some instances, though some may have been bumped or netted for reasons the photos couldn't illustrate. Maybe that's a benefit of the cac sticker then?
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
All good points...the key here is whether or not the collector is a seasoned Barber Collector or a beginner.
I, from a personal point of view, can see buying a CAC coin in high end MS grades if you are unfamiliar with a series. I have to evaluate MS Barbers much more carefully than circulatted ones. I have not had the experience of grading MS coins - I have had to rely on the advice of others - ie: PCGS, CAC, and a few friends in the business.
Barberfanatic, I have heard Axiom Number One quite a bit as of late from other Barber Collectors. I look forward to this upcoming FUN show where I will have a fantastic group of Barber Quarters as well as a few MS Dimes and Halves.
In the mean time, I am still fooling around with my circulated Half set... and here are a few more goodies I have picked up...
... and another 1896-S for good measure...
Although I recently picked up two other 1901-S [ PCGS 45 Ty 1 & another PCGS 40 Ty 2 ] - I couldn't pass this one up:
I was behaving, Justin, I could have done a lot more damage. I have yet to crack out any of the coins for the Dansco - now - I may continue to build a certified set - and am almost done...
My raw coins in the Dansco look lonely ...
I'm sending my 8 ANACS & NGC Barber Halves into PCGS for Cross Over - I have to use up my Free Grading Voucher.

I'm sure you could have, Mike. Good luck on your crossovers.
Mike, Back to the CAC discussion...have you considered PCGS Secure Plus? I have been leaning more toward this than the CAC certifications. I'm still a novice in my grading skills but I like the idea of laser-identification, certification, and tracking. Thinking of having my collection re-submitted for PCGS Secure Plus certification rather than CAC...but is still just a thought.
Mike...look at your coins very good before you send them in. Especially the ANACS coins. If you feel comfortable they will cross I would crack them out and send them in. I did pretty well with my last group and just cracked 30 coins last week and sent them in! I will be very interested in seeing how they do. I think 1/2 might garner another 5 points!
As for CAC....to me they are just like the grading services....they make their share of mistakes as well. I've seen a few that shouldn't be graded...much less cac stickered!
I have no immediate plans on resubmitting the balance of my collection; let alone submitting to CAC . When the time comes to sell, I will resubmit my PCGS coins ( which constitute 98% of my collection ). I am a fan of Secure Plus and many of my better coins are so holdered.
Once I decide to sell, I will resubmit everything to Secure Plus at PCGS, and the auction company can submit to CAC . Until then, I'll continue to have " fun with my coins ".
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Everyone's focus as of late is on FUN ... however... has anyone been looking at the upcoming auction at Stack's Bowers - auction is January 17th [ I believe ] ... and they have a fantastic selection of Halves.
Very strong selection of AU coins. Some are quite attractive... some not so.
Well worth checking out this site !!!

Happy Hunting !!
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
The CAC and PCGS Secure Plus conversation is interesting. In my opinion, there is no reason for a PCGS Secure Plus resubmission for a coin already certified by PCGS. All they are doing with this service is creating a topographical map of the surfaces to identify the coin later on; they are not deeming it to have original surfaces or giving it extra grading scrutiny in the grading process. CAC is a little different. The CAC paradigm is to assert that the coin is accurately graded in their eyes and that the coin has not been manipulated past their point of acceptance. In each instance (grading and manipulation) I think CAC is a slight bit more conservative than the TPGs, but I have seen plenty of coins in PCGS or NGC holders with and without CAC stickers that I would run away from if offered for sale. PCGS, NGC and CAC may not be useful to a boatload of folks, but their downside upon usage is tiny whereas the fianacial peril one potentially exposes themselves to when ignoring these tools by engaging in hubris can be great, indeed. Most here might realize that I support both the idea of PCGS/NGC and also of CAC, but that doesn't mean that I have little experience in our Barber niche or that I am not an accurate or confident grader. Protect yourself out there.
Justin, I could hardly believe my eyes that there was one available... the 95-S just has not been around anywhere for months !!
I also nabbed a decent 1894-P in an NGC 25 Holder - its not as nice as a PCGS 35 that I owned this Fall for all of 10 minutes [ that I agreed to sell to a collector friend who was down to a couple of dates in VF 35.] But considering what I had to pay for this NGC 25, I now know what a steal I got the PCGS 35 for - and I only marked it up a few bucks for my trouble. I wish I had kept my mouth shut now - and not said anything about my newps to that collector. What are ya goin' to do ?
Anyhow - here's the replacement 1894-P ...

I told you I threw you a bone on that one since you bought so many others! Makes a difference when you make a coin as opposed to buying one already entombed in plastic!
Would love to meet some of you other Barber Folks. I'll be at table 463 in front of the poor boys section at FUN!
That you, Darrell ? Please turn on your message button. "PM" button.
You were so right, that 1894 in 35 you sold me was a really nice coin. I know that collector who had made the drive up from Richmond to Baltimore was distraught your coin was sold out of your case. I had forgotten how hard the 94 was to locate.
If you're at FUN, Glenn & I are at table 476... On Saturday late afternoon, we are moving to tables 409 & 411 ( I believe ) As we will have the Barber Coin Collectors Society "banner" - we should be recognizable !!
Glenn has some really nice new Dimes and Halves. I will also have a few Dimes - ex: ELBESAAR Collection ( ) ... which have been off the market for years. A few Proof V Nickels as well.
BTW, the Barber Quarter consignment I am handling, will be reconsigned to Glenn, should any not sell at FUN. If anyone needs to get in touch with me on any of these consigned coins, please PM me - I will respond - as I will have my iPad with me.
Happy Hunting Everyone & Happy New Year !!

Hey,Mike Yup! It's me! Good to see you yesterday. I'm betting you scarfed up most Barbers worth buying yesterday. You sure were buzzing around! I was going to turn on the PM but seems you have to give up all your personal info...not one for doing that on a forum!
Glenn Holsonbake, myself, Coinkid855 and B ( he's a regular poster here but I've forgotten his "handle". Sorry, B.) ... well, we got just about everything out And due to a lack of space ( a temporary situation as I believe we are moving to larger digs on Saturday afternoon.) we couldn't put out all of our material. Glenn was generous and gave me use of one of his four cases.
My Barber Quarter consignment seems to be a hit with the dealers so far & most are awaiting the arrival of the 16 coins I had professionally imaged.
I was also fortunate to run into Arnie Heller and Darrell Kreiss. I unburdened them of a dozen Halves ( each ). I picked up some great coins - a few are duplicate upgrades but, as of this moment, the Barber Half Project I started shortly after the Chicago ANA this August, is now finished. !!
I also dropped off eight Halves at PCGS for cross over. These were to have been cracked out for the Dansco, but I have abandoned that plan. All future purchases will be raw, and will be placed in the Dansco. My original intentions were good, but I ended up not wanting to crack out any of the coins after all.
Again, if anyone is coming to FUN, we are at Table 476 - until late Saturday afternoon.

Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Completed Danscos make me make me envious. Never accomplished that. Tried the Halves many times but end up upgrading and slabbing. Quarters too. In fact a couple of days ago I removed my 05-o, 09-o and 98-s raw VF35 quarters from their flips and popped them into an empty Dansco and stared at it for a while. That's a long road even without the Big Three, but I'm still thinking about making another go of it. Since there's only 2 Barber Halves I really want I'll bet I put something together in quarters this year.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
My big success from FUN was getting my 1892 Micro O back from PCGS, it is a beautiful example without question. Special thanks to Mike Hayes who was my front man in the acquisition, as without his help, this would not have happened. It was also a great honor to receive compliments from Dale and Peter on this coin. When the "big three" in Barber Halves say good work, a collector knows he is on the right track!
Very nice, Joe. Mike showed me the pic on his cell phone at FUN, and it looked impressive even that way. Seeing this pic blows my mind! They did a fantastic job conserving that, and now you have a monster rarity that is very presentable!
<< <i>Very nice, Joe. Mike showed me the pic on his cell phone at FUN, and it looked impressive even that way. Seeing this pic blows my mind! They did a fantastic job conserving that, and now you have a monster rarity that is very presentable! >>
Even though the coin is conserved or repaired(is removing solder a repair or being conserved?) it is still a sweet coin. I had the opportunuty to view it in hand. Hard to believe that solder came off so well!
Are you kidding? Who's got the Magic Wand??? That Micro o is georgeous. Quick, crack it out and send it raw to anacs then get it crossed back straight! Nobody will ever know.

Congrats again on the micro O half. You have a beauty for your set, and a very rare coin.
I looked at some of the Barber Halves at the Heritage Auction, but the 1914 in PCGS 66 didn't work for me. The finest known is the Duckor coin that was MS 66+ and this coin is second and went for something like $30K. My coin is third at MS 65+ so despite not getting an upgrade, it would seem that the strong auction price should help the value of my coin, and what's not to like about that. There were some key dates like the 96-O in NGC 66 that went fairly cheap and the 1904-S in NGC 65 went for about $30K. Those are the two rarest dates in mint state other than the micro O and I expected stronger money to be paid for them.
Had a great time working at Harry Laibstain's table and saw many of my good Barber friends. We were constantly busy at the table, something I like; it beats those shows that are slow and not much seems to be happening. I really should try to make it to all the January FUN shows. I barely had any time to look at coins on the bourse as we had customers at the table almost all the time.

My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
Can somebody from PCGS look into why the thread sticks every time it rolls over to a new page?
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
I keep my eyes peeled. I don't think the coin is a bad buy to be honest. Just all the money in today's current market. And yes it does have a good look! Wish that 96-S he had was a descent coin. Still wondering how those PCGS coins managed to make their way to the other side of the world!
A friend of mine bought an 1895-O Dime - PCGS AU 50 from him last year.
He and I were a bit nervous about it, but the "bloke" turned out to be a good guy.
Between my accumulated eBay Bucks and double eBay bucks on this purchase, I couldn't go wrong. I like the look of the coin. That's all that matters. I now have a VF 20 as a duplicate, and one of these days, I will post a side by side comparison, as soon as the Newp arrives from "Down Under" !!

He and I were a bit nervous about it, but the "bloke" turned out to be a good guy.
Between my accumulated eBay Bucks and double eBay bucks on this purchase,
I couldn't go wrong. I like the look of the coin. That's all that matters. I now have
a VF 20 as a duplicate, and one of these days, I will post a side by side comparison,
as soon as the Newp arrives from "Down Under" !!

That's an outstanding example!
<< <i>Well congratulations to whomever went in strong for that wholesome looking 45 96-O half on the bay this morning.
That's an outstanding example! >>
Yes it was - it was offered to me last night before it hit eBay.
I have a PCGS 30 & a PCGS 40 and just couldn't justify another,
no matter how nice.
What did it sell for on the Bay ?
