Mike, thanks for minding the store as it allowed everything to work in Pittsburgh. Without your's and Paul's help it wouldn't have freed me up enough to make it all happen when we switched gears. A public shout out to the both of you. And now on to the paperwork side of the biz.....

    Sigh!

    Here is another Barber I picked up while at Glenn's table;
its one nice advantage to be able to cherry pick his newps for my set,
but I didn't make a move until the middle of the second day - giving
walk up clients a chance to look at some nice mid grade Barber Halves.

I showed this coin to three collectors before I bought it for myself,
I owned it once before - sold it to another collector thru Glenn - who
received it back on consignment from that collector - and although its
really too nice to crack out, I just wanted another 1901-S in high grade.

    1901-S Half: PCGS XF 45:

It seems that I have used up my allotment of free space at Photobucket.
Guess not - all they wanted from me [ aside to sign up for a PRO Account ]
    was to complete their survey.

I guess I can start downloading images again !!

Hope the paperwork was in order - and the receipts were all there.

Its always a pleasure assisting you - and I have to agree, Paul's help
was invaluable. Too bad he had a cold - which I seem to have brought
    back to Florida with me.

Its almost Noon... so I can have a Jameson - or two- to kill those nasty germs !! image

Somehow I figured I was competing with you on that 03-O. image

    Very nice pick-up.
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

I lost four coins and I bid them to what I thought was
acceptable levels - and I was out bid. The 96-O in VF 30
went for a pretty penny - about $250 over my max bid.
    Also, I had my sights on the 1913-D in PCGS 3o as well;
but I was outbid and I threw in a VERY strong bid.

The 98-S, 04-O and 06-S are duplicates but the 03-O
    was needed...sorry...

Again, it was nice meeting you the other day !

I love that new quarter Mike, the next time it gets traded, I want to be the guy on the receiving end.

The 01-S half is quite nice, actually it's the source for my Avatar.

Cary, great job locating those crusty halves. Wouldn't a complete set of halves like that be something special

Just got a Barber Half love token the other day. Obviously was a pin at one time as well. Not the best looking I've ever seen, but it wasn't too expensive. Not sure what the initials are, my best guess is "WJ" but I'm not sure...

I had a good time looking through halves at Pittsburgh. I can only hope I have the same amount to look through in Baltimore.

Mike, you have picked up quite a number of halves for your set. And a lot of lookers as well. image

    At least it wasn't a micro O - like the broach - a few posts back !!

Finding a micro O as a love token would have made me ill. I believe
the Micro O Broach should be able to be conserved. Once completed
and conserved correctly - I think it should get into a new PCGS Genuine
Holder with an AU Details Designation.

I'm very much interested in finding out how that works out for my friend
who purchased it. Best of luck, Beancounter !

I'm a bit suspicious of the 1894-s - but the others look natural.

The 1896-S is a tough coin and I was happy to get it - albeit at the top of my bid range.

Went to the Glendale Coin Club show yesterday in Van Nuys, CA and picked up a couple of Barber quarters which were just a little bit "different"

1898 Barber "MY VALENTINE" Quarter, has lots of detail but might have been in a bezel at one point, hard to tell:

I think Mike might be referring to this new addition to my set. It's a 1892 micro o Barber half that had an unfortunate encounter with a soldering iron. The coin itself is quite nice and would grade AU if........

I was very excited to see that Micro O in Pittsburgh.

I actually never thought you'd seriously go after it.
Based on our conversations, I feel that once conserved
and sent to PCGS for a Genuine AU Detail Holder, I think
you'll have something very special and in the long run, a
    virtual steal.

I'm thrilled to have brought you to this "brooch" and
look forward to seeing the final result. I hope by the
Denver ANA this upcoming Summer !!!

Edit to add: Please image the OBV as well.

That pin is incredible... such a shame that a rarity of that magnitude was subjected to such defamation. image
I would definitely have it conserved by an expert.

Thanks, Joe for posting the images.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the end result !!

While at Pittsburgh, I picked up a coin that I have always liked.

I know I've already posted this but humor me for a second:

I just won another - and I wondered why I had put another bid in on a duplicate - but - its a nice coin as well...

    imageimage

Ok, my Bretheren, tell me why I did this - why did I buy this duplicate ?

I think one of these days, I'll post every one of the 1901-S's that I've owned... its too funny really... I need to be committed !! image

I wanted the PCGS in Fine - 12 - and I was high bidder until the bitter end [ I thought NO-ONE would out bid me !! ]
I got slammed - and out bid by almost $200 !! The XF 40 - although nice - wasn't nice enough [looks wise]

I was creamed as well on the 02-O in XF45; 95-S in XF 45; and the 92-S XF40... and I thought I had bid heavily !

I was just glad no one bid me up too much more on that 01-S Ty 2 - it kept creaping up from $799 to $1284.

Contrary to what some seem to be inferring about the 93-S that sold for almost $2500, that price is not reflective of the current market for that coin. I know the high bidder and the underbidder very well. There was a mixup last night between two guys who really wanted the coin - one who needed that date to finish his set, and one who is trying to "corner the market" on key date, mid-grade Barbers. The result was the coin selling for about a grand higher than otherwise would have occurred. Based on recent auction history, the coin's market is truly only around $1600-$1700. Search Heritage's auction archives over the past year or two for evidence of this.

Keep in mind that this is coming from a guy whose favorite date in the series BY FAR is the 93-S.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

Ok, Leon... you kiddingly asked for this...

Here are all of the 1893-S's I have owned - some are seller's images -
and we'll start with the one I got from Brandon Johnson, ex: DLRC auction - 2007:
    image

Heritage's images at auction this past August:
    imageimage

Followed closely with the one I bought raw [ with an insert from PCGS ] from Barberfanatic in the 2003- 2004 era as memory serves me:
    imageimage

Images of another I have on hand, I believe this coin's image was a tease sent to me by Barberfanatic...:
    image

Heritage's images - this AU 55 coin sold for $150 more than the AU 58...

I have others - but lets save those for a rainy day, ok ?
