My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
Had to wait until PCGS announced it (see their latest e-magazine), but my Registry Barber Half Set will be on display at the Pittsburgh ANA at the PCGS table. I will be there at selected times to meet and talk to anyone who stops by when I'm there. Otherwise I will be working at Harry Laibstain's table for most of the show. PCGS made up some amazing brochures about the set.
<< <i>Pete, although I had seen most coins of your set over the years it was a treat to see them all in one place in Long Beach.
For anyone going to Pittsburgh check Dr. Pete's set out. It's an amazing collection and a treat to view. >>
It's just one more reason for me to be upset about not being able to make the Pittsburgh show.

I mentioned that I was putting together yet another Dansco - Half Dollar album - but this time the coins will be VG 10 - to - VF 20 -25. I'm aiming for F-15 .
Also, many know of the situation of the wrong lot being sent to by by Stack's Bowers - and my return of the 1821 Half Eagle. I mentioned in another thread that I received a $500 credit as a Thank You for my honesty in notifying them of their error.
Well, I used that credit up on yesterday's Stack's Bowers Auction in Philadelphia... here is a decent 1897-O in an ANACS 15 holder which will be cracked out for the Dansco album.
I know its not the nicest example I've owned - but - it meets the criteria of what I'm doing now.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Thanks, Mike. I would have bought more but I only had an hour on the bourse. I did get to meet John Frost from the BCCS who was nice. Next up, Pittsburgh.
Justin - Its just a real SOB to locate - and now that it sort of matches the rest of this newer set - I'll hold off until I can throughly examine another set being presented to me next month. If there is a comporable 05-O in that raw set, then I'll let you know. The same goes for my newer 96-O in VF 35 if you're so inclined.
Greg - I have never found an 05-O in anything above G 6 that didn't have a few problems - and when they're available - you have to snap them up.
In the mean time, Happy Hunting everyone !

No problem, after all, it is your coin. As far as the 96-O, I'm trying to keep in the F15-VF25 range. I already bought a VF35 coin (not the 96-O) and kind of kicking myself because it really doesn't match my set.
I had an eye on that particular one, but did not bid. Still a little more detail than what I have in my set. I do like it though. Looks like it has nice color to it. I know the HA images tend to be a little brighter than in hand.
I purchased this coin at the Philly show. It was originally purchased to be part of the inventory on my site, but there was something about the coin that made me decide to keep it. Therefore, I believe another Barber half from my collection will have to be sold, instead. It is in a PCGS AU58 holder of the generation where the holder is in two parts composed of the inner, rattler style holder surrounded by a plastic outer ring. The insert is green with dot matrix style printing, perforated edges and no "PCGS" printed on top. Most folks realize that I do not typically embrace essentially white coinage from this era, but this coin has a thick, frosty skin and terrific frost.
<< <i>It's just a real SOB to locate... I have never found an 05-O in anything above G 6 that didn't have a few problems - and when they're available - you have to snap them up. >>
I agree completely, as Mike knows from direct experience with me...
In my 13+ years of exclusively collecting and obsessively/ferociously/maniacally hunting for mid-grade Barber Halves I had only ever seen a single problem-free 05-O. That was the VF35 example in Tyler Child's former set (now in Joe Wojteczko's set). That is, until the 2011 FUN show in January.
I was one of the first people to stop by Glenn Holsonbake's table on Dealer Setup Day where Mike Hayes was helping out. Mike had a number of nice Barbers he was selling from his personal collection. As my eye quickly scanned through the eye candy to get an overall feel for what he had, it immediately stopped on a completely original looking 1905-O in a PCGS XF40 holder. I think my jaw literally fell open and saliva began to bubble up inside my mouth as I asked to see the coin.
As I held the slab at mid-arm's length I noticed the obverse looked essentially perfect. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! My first thought after the intial shock wore off was, "Well, there's probably something wrong with the reverse." I turned the slab over to check the reverse. It was just as amazing as the obverse! I think I fumbled my words as I asked Mike how much he wanted for it. He quoted me an extremely high price and mentioned that he didn't really want to sell it, but that was the amount he would need in order to part with it.
I couldn't get the money out of my wallet fast enough!
No haggling. No waiting. BOOM!!! I paid his price on the spot. It was and is the nicest mid-grade example of this date I've ever seen with the look I like, and it is definitely one of the showstoppers in my collection. So not to take away anything from Mike's very nice 05-O he just acquired, please allow me to share a photo of my 1905-O XF40, ex. Mike Hayes, ex. Chris Dudzik:

Well, I guess I'm not surprised that I haven't come across the 05-O in VF/XF yet, if savvy veterans are only finding two coins in >13 years! I guess I shoulda grabbed the original F12 I was offered at Bid at my dealer friend's table last summer
Wow, that is one exceptional 05-O. And so is Mike's current one. Guess I know the guys I have to butter up when I need the scarce ones to finish my set.

I really hated selling that coin - as well as the other coin you bought from me - the 1901-S in AU 50 - but you did pony up for them. Now, I'd consider those two coins to be a bargain ...

I have a quick question. Why does the Red Book list the mintage for the 1909-P half at 2,368,000 when I have seen atleast two different publications list the mintage at 2,368,650 including David Lawrence's book?

I'm not positive, but I think that baby'll grade!
I picked up a couple of Halves at the Chicago ANA...
Not for sale - for display only. This is far more colorful than my old AU55's & 58's !!
The 1896-O lasted five minutes at Glenn's table - he was gracious
enough to give me part of a display case to sell some of my coins.

Mike..you do know in this new era of tolerance and understanding...I'm not too old to be adopted!
Ok, Leon, you're adopted - now get over here and clean the pool,
mow the lawn - wash the sliding glass doors - bring my car to get
serviced, etc etc.
Are you sure you want me to adopt you ? It also doesn't mean
that you be in the Will either...
No seriously, these Dimes are going to go to the kid - every so
often he gets a new addition - I just enjoy searching for them.
