The final addition to my Everyman Barber dime set. The 02 is not supposed to be this hard but this coin was a challenge to find.
A special thanks to Batman23 who answered my call on the buy/sell/trade with his offer for a trade.
I also want to say thanks to Mike Hayes, without his help this collection would not have been successful. Mike you are a great inspiration and so willing to share your knowledge and encouragement. You are da Man!
Thanks for the kind words, Joe. I appreciate it. I was glad to assist you on acquiring Dimes for your set. You have to also thank PonyExpress8 as well, he was the one who urged me to get my duplicates holdered at PCGS. I'm also glad to see so many of my old coins from the Dansco album in your collection. Somewhere in "my pictures" I should have complete page shots of that set.
While searching for the above mentioned Dimes, I came across the Obverse images of my old Half set - which has since been broken up and sent in to PCGS for grading. I had this set with me last year at the Boston ANA - and sold it to PonyExpress8.
Remember what I have always said... the fun of collecting is in the hunt.

Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I liked a coin so much, I bought it in 2004, sold it at auction just before the Chicago ANA, then found what I thought was a different coin than my old one, bought it at the ANA at JJ Teaparty's table , had it imaged, then resold it at Glenn's table.
I guess when I like something, I really like it...plus my grey matter must be shrinking if I can't remember my own coins when I see them again.
I had to resize both images - it affected the quality of the first image - so - please do not critique the images.
Thanks !!

Won an auction for a little over $50 face of Barbers back when silver was higher. At the time I was getting the group under melt, but now that silver is down I'm in them for a little over melt. Still think I got a decent deal on them. It's a good mix of halves (around 50), quarters (about 80) and dimes (about 70). Most are in AG-VG condition, though some of the dimes are F/VF or so. Some of the coins have problems like scratches and cleaning, but most are just average circulated Barbers with 100 or so years of history to them I'll have fun going through them and filling holes and upgrading spots in my albums, so that's worth something too
<< <i>Nice hoard. I'd think barber dimes at melt could fill half a Dansco, and I'm thinking from Mike's entry above, that would be kind of fun. >>
I've been filling a few Danscos with only coins that I've bought for silver melt value (or really close to melt). I've filled many more holes that I thought I would, but for the tougher dates the coins usually have problems or are very worn, down to FR02/AG03 condition.
So far, w/o looking at the group I just got, I've filled 45/86 of the dimes, 56/74 of the quarters and 47/73 of the halves. Not too bad for "junk silver"
During the Heritage ANA auction - my 1901-S Half in PCGS 63 didn't sell.
However, dealer, Arnie Heller had a table around the corner from Glenn & I and he and I got into a conversation about the coin.
We agreed on a price slightly over my reserve but also slightly less than what he'd have to pay with the buyers commission. So, it was a "win-win" situation.
Today, I noticed that he has placed his other 01-S Half up for sale on eBay; its a very nice PCGS 55 [ once in an ANACS holder ] - and as it turns out - it was once part of my AU collection. I sold the coin when I upgraded to a 63.
Check it out before its sold. I really is a nice coin. As you know, Arnie isn't shy when it comes to his ask prices... but this time, I think he's right on the mark.
He's getting too smart for his own good - he knows about the PCGS web site and sees which coins he hasn't received yet - and has been prodding me as to when he'll get the next one.
He's got a few stashed inside his house - and I tell him where to find them every so often.
Edit: I had to block the Registry site collection - Marco's Barber Dimes

Mike, your F-VF set is coming along nicely. PM me a current want list and I can keep an eye out for you. Of course, I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to do the critique Joe was asking me for! Joe, I will get on that, I promise.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
Leon & Cary - I'll get back to you after Pittsburgh.
I just checked into the room - and Glenn just texted that he was leaving Vegas and should be here about 1:00 AM or so -
Off to Lot Previews tomorrow - and maybe set up if they'll let us. Its actually very comfortable here - in the low 70's [ a lot nicer than 85 and humid in Naples.]

Thread is stuck again. Why does it always stick until there are three posts on a page?
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
Those who know me around these parts know that my primary Barber Half set is comprised of coins that grade VF35 to XF45 with a few VF30s sprinkled in at the moment that I'll eventually get around to upgrading. However, I liked the look of these two coins so much that I had to own them. Their appearances certainly won't please most AU collectors, especially since the majority of them seem to prefer either rainbow toned or white-to-champagne toned examples. However, I tend to like my coins with a brownish "crustiness" to them, and these two pieces definitely have that look. I know they're not key dates or even semi-key dates in the series, but I don't care - I'm posting photos of them anyway!
If there were an abundance of AUs out there that had that look, I would seriously consider trying to assemble a complete set of them. However, since AUs with this kind of look are few and far between, you AU collectors don't need to worry about any added competition for coins from me. As I said, I simply liked the look of these two.

Finding nice middle grade halves while SITTING at the master's table is, well, easier than shooting fish in a barrel, Mike Kidding aside, I heard it was a good show for Barber halves (apparently not much else though, based on all the complaining).
It was refreshing to have a number of referrals coming to Glenn's table looking for mid grade Barber Halves.
I also sold a few nice Quarters and Dimes as well. Even though Glenn stocks a variety of different material - its Barbers he's known for - and as a result we get our fair share of the Barber business.
Here's another newp:
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Heard from another friend - he just sent me an image of the nicest 1903 Dime in an NGC 58 holder with an O/C coin. Very nice - I hope he posts it.
I have always liked Barber errors - and although I only have a couple left from my old set of Dimes, I was smitten with this and it now is great company of MS 1898 dated Dimes, Quarters and Halves.
This coin has spoken to me for years - and I finally was able to pick it up while I was in Pittsburgh.

I know a lot of collectors don't like to wade thru thousands of posts to get to the end - but this Thread was meant to be educational as well as just showing newps.
Many of the previous posters are no longer collecting - sad to say - and they are missed !! Hoping they at least catch up on looking at this Thread, I have a few newps from Tyler's auction on eBay last night. [ I wish I had gotten more !! ]
These are scheduled for the Dansco:
This 1898-S was in a Genuine holder and although I had the date already [ from a Walkerguy21D recent purchase ] I couldn't let this go for a song. Neither Tyler nor I can see why this got a Genuine grade instead of an XF 45.
This 1903-O was a date I actually needed - and its a perfect fit for the raw book:
This 1904-O is also a duplicate for my Dansco - as just last week Walkerguy21D sent me a choice VF for the Dansco. Guess you can't have enough nice 1904-O's either !! LOL
Although I already had this next date - as I had just picked up the 1906-S at Baltimore - Tyler's auction wasn't getting the play it deserved - and you can't get enough nice Barbers and this 1906-S is a tough date as it is:
As time permits, I'll add the other dates I picked up for the Dansco while babysitting Glenn's table. You can not "let a kid watch a candy store !!" [ I ain't no kid - but the display cases were a candy store to me !! ]
