The mintmarks were punched in by hand after the rest of the die was finished. Therefore, they will migrate slightly from die to die within any given year.
<< <i>Ok guys, educate me - re: the Stacks auction - why the huge price result differential in the 02-S halves in PCGS XF40 vs- XF45? Was the eye appeal worth that much more, or is XF45 the 'hot' grade to get B-halves in now? >>
Rumor has it that there's a new Barber guy who is flying under the radar and trying to assemble both an AU58 set and an XF45 set for each of the Barber series. A source of mine told me this gentleman just came into some BIG TIME money and he's looking to spend it.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

He's gonna need it! That would be most impressive to see when they are done, as those are both excellent grades. But I'm also thinking there must be multiple guys doing an XF45 set to drive the price up like that.

All I know is that I met the guy who bought my 1904-S Half in PCGS 58 - and he told me he was attempting a complete set of Halves in AU 58. We discussed at legnth the absence of an 1897-S in 58 - and he seems to know where he can place his hands on a couple that could grade as such, here at PCGS. I wish him all the luck in the world.
We never discussed an XF 45 set - but then again, I didn't even think to ask him if he was collecting other grades. I do know for a fact that he and I are collecting the sames series in Dimes [ no, not Barbers ] and we have butted heads a few times in the auction room.
Regarding the variances of the XF 40 & XF 45 1902-S Halves. I was the winner of the XF 45. I loved its look- not so much the XF 40 example. I had another 02-S in a PC 45 holder last year and sold it at a show to another Barberite - for a bit less than what yet another example brought at a Heritage auction. Needless to say, if I see a coin that has it all going for it, and has a ready made clientele, then I'm gung ho on the coin.
I was able to land a few more coins today - other than what I posted before. Images to follow.
... and ... they are worth the wait !

Jeez, this thread is banging in the last 24 hours. Snuck over to the San Jose show this morning right at the opening and came away with a very pleasing 96 P half in XF. I'll post an actually decent photo tonight. Shocked to see a PCGS VF35 1909-o quarter in a case. Beating heart.... Until I said, Oh you know about these. It was $1125.

I can see your point, but it wouldn't have been much of an upgrade for the raw one in my Dansco for which I'd paid about 1/4 as much. Speaking of which, I'd put a small budget on myself for my coin show visit today expecting to pick off a couple of crusties for the quarter book and not much else, but in my first five minutes I found this and brought it home. Don't remember ever owning a 96P above fine. Has tons of luster and has never been messed with. The band under Liberty is washed out in the photo but it's there.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
I looked for a decent 93-S for a couple of years with no luck, then there was a mini-flurry. I think people know this and are snapping up keys and semi-keys and they might disappear for a long time...or the high prices could draw another flurry. I was wondering about this one as I think the Stack's coins went too cheap.
Wow! That was a gorgeous 1893-S on ebay and it sold for a tremendous price. To be fair, I was also offered $1,500+ for my PCGS EF40/CAC 1893-S almost two years ago, but didin't sell it. The reason I kept it was because I have looked forever for such a coin that matched my requirements, but only found the single piece that now resides in my collection. Therefore, I am happy that I still own the coin. $1,580.55
<< <i>Interesting about the 93-S, I thought the 93-S at Stacks Bowers went for $1K below where I thought it would end up at. Thank God I was wrong !
Looking forward to seeing the results of this VF 35 later tonight.
Edit: $1,580.55 !!!
The winner had chased it ... There were 2 bids over mine >>
Having owned more than half a dozen different AU examples (and more than a dozen examples in any grade VF or better) of the 93-S, I think I speak from experience. The Stacks 93-S in PCGS 55 was sold in the June 2011 Long Beach auction (when it was an NGC 55) for $1092.50 (which includes the juice). The streaks (roller marks?) on the front of the coin and the overall lackluster appearance of both the Heritage and Stack's photos no doubt contributed to the low prices for that coin. I'm not trying to insult the coin or its new owner, but it ain't exactly the greatest looking example that's for sure.
The 93-S PCGS VF35 on Ebay... selling price seemed a tad high to me and the coin appeared only marginally acceptible to me. But then again, I tend to be overly picky. Given how typically offered VF range 93-S examples look when they do infrequently come to market, the stretch was probably worth it (especially in the long term). Personally, I'm hoping Greg managed to get it for his VF35 set; maybe he'll chime in and let us know.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
Arnie's BIN 93-s Pcgs 35 from 2 weeks ago looks like a steal, even tho it was a 30. My prediction: this date will buckle under 04-s-ization in a year and the next hot date wil be..... I don't know. For 1500, I'd say someone got a very nice example, if you like your coins looking like they were pulled out of grampa's sock drawer after 60 years.

I did not see any at FUN 2011; this year I saw three - a cleaned raw XF offered as (and priced) a Ch AU, a PCGS F15 priced at moon money, and a nice raw VF in a set being broken up that I got first shot at
Not a chance in H*#% Way too many mint state coins to keep the ceiling low. You can have that coin all day long 58 and above. I moreso agree with the the 02-s to a certain extent because it has a buzz going on with the in crowd and the mint state examples are few. It could blow up, but then it's generally not hot to the general public much as a lower mid-grade coin. Doesn't have a history beyond being a "better date".

That's one sweet 93-S!! Agree with you Dogwood, 02-S could be the find of the future...but I also wonder about others such as the 96 and 97 sisters, 01-S, 05-O, 10-S, and many others that we could ruminate about.
