<< <i>Bad day 35, good day 40...I think it's a 35. I almost bought that 15-S a few times, thanks for removing temptation. >>
Its in an ANACS 35 Holder at the moment. I sent it in along with its Philadelphia Sister Date:
I sent these two in on an Economy Submission - I think I did okay with my last 8 coins' submission, and based on the eye appeal of these two, I think I'll do alright again.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Best of luck to Glenn in the new venture. He is a great guy to work with and really knows his Barbers and a whole lot more.
Mike - Good news for you as well. I don't know Darrell, but Arnie always has a lot of Barber material. My guess is there will be a line of folks just waiting to see what's in the cases.
Darrell is a highly ethical, extremely friendly, straight-shooting "good ol' Georgia country boy" who is fanatical about Barbers so he normally has an excellent selection in his inventory. I've known Darrell for YEARS and he's one of my best friends in this hobby.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
Teaparty just listed some newps. Last year I bought a couple of 98-Os and thought I was buried in them. Teaparty has a PC25 at $729...guess I'm not buried!
Craig, That Quarter looks very much like one of my old coins.
... LOL... yes, I think there might be a few Barbers at our table. Probably more than has ever been shown at one location in recent history. More to come too !
I heard that Darrell, Arnie and I will be at table # 310 at the Baltimore show, Thursday thru Saturday ( March 22, 23 and 24 ). I hope everyone who is attending will stop by and say hello.
Have a great weekend !!

USAFRETWI, That 93-S looks like an XF-45 ALL DAY LONG! I would seriously consider that for a regrade unless there's something else that prevents it from grading higher...but from the pics...that's a GREAT LOOKING XF-45.
There's a scratch from the corner of the eye to the left of the headban. Only thing I can see that would hold it back. Really like the look of that coin
Ken, I really like the look of your 93-S as well. Great patina, nice color, and strong strikes in all the right areas. The scratch on the cheek is not that visible from the image (maybe more so in hand) but I would venture to get it regraded when you have the opportunity. In any case, you have a GORGEOUS XF-40 93-S. They don't come along very often and you certainly scored a beauty! Enjoy!
Sorry to say, but I sold off a few of the MS Halves that did not make their Reserves at last August ANA Heritage auction. They are now with a Mid Western collector in a great set of MS 64's.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I still haven't photo'd any of that hoard of VF/XF quarters I bought at FUN 96O, 97O, 01O, 05O, etc.
Suh-weeet 08O half BTW, Mike! >>
I'm glad someone still likes Barber Quarters!! Sounds like a nice group you picked up. Seems they're getting no love any more. My Dansco, less the B3, is coming along nicely.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
<< <i>I'm glad someone still likes Barber Quarters!! Sounds like a nice group you picked up. Seems they're getting no love any more. >>
Could be - a dealer at Lakeland (from whom I bought a 95S and another, lower grade 97O) commented 'there is no market for these right now'.....so I enjoyed favorable pricing....though I think Mike H. did well with that superior AU group he acquired. Maybe if or when Barber Half fever runs its course, the mid grade circ quarters will be back in vogue. The more I study, the more I realize this is a VERY tough series, even outside of the big three. 96O, 97O, 97S, 01O, 05O, 08S, 09O, 11D, 13P, 14S all seem to be challenging....and I'm sure I'm missing some others.
That superior group [ yes, it is ] of AU Barber Quarters were consigned to me; I in turn had them on display at FUN while assisting Glenn Holsonbake. With the consignor's permission, I reconsigned them to Glenn when FUN was over.
I have had a BST on the last of the available dates since before FUN. There are some really fantastic coins left. Initially, I mentioned when I wrote up the BST, that these coins were not going to get sold at Fire Sale Prices, but at auction pricing. The coins are priced fairly and Glenn will be more than happy to discuss any one of them in great detail if you wish.
Ok... having said that - I thought I'd show off another nice [ IMHO ] example of what album toning should look like. I have every intention of getting this crossed.
Now - what do you think of this coin... honestly...
Thinks its a VF 35 - XF 40 - XF 45 - AU 50 - AU 53 - or - AU 55 - or .92 GEN
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Mike, if the 1898 half crosses I would say XF45 or AU50. Dogwood, thanks for posting your nice original 09-O quarter. I think quarters are as popular as ever, they just tend to be neglected on this thread.
Glad you guys like the 09-o. Thanks. Was just looking over results for the Stacks Bowers auction in January and was amazed at the $3162 that the 1914-s Quarter in AU58 PCGS hammered at. That's a POP 7 Coin! Exactly the same 58 pops as 03-s, 06-o, 07-D, 08-s, and 10-D, some of the best "sleeper dates". Interesting. That is all.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Dogwood, I was also surprised at the strong price realized by the AU58 14-S. I really went overboard last Aug. when I bought Mike's nice original AU58 14-S in the Heritage auction at $2900. I think Mike's coin was much nicer so maybe I wasn't so crazy afterall!
I like Barber quarters, but I'm one of those that the cost of the keys has always chased away from the series...even though now I could probably find a way to get them. FYI I have an acquaintance who has the set in 63 but wouldn't pull the trigger on the 01-S and now he really is priced out of ever finishing it.
<< <i>I like Barber quarters, but I'm one of those that the cost of the keys has always chased away from the series...even though now I could probably find a way to get them. I worked with a dealer to build an AU set of quarters and even he recommended not buying an 01-S. Too expensive and I still consider my set complete since I will never buy the coin.
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.
I thought the same thing about the 01-S Quarter- until I was offered one in a PCGS 55 holder. It cost me a bloody fortune - worst investment I ever made. [ well, almost ]. I have seen only one 01-S in AU in a PCGS holder that I can actually say that I really liked and its tied up in a collection in the mid West. Its in an AU 55 holder - and is undergraded. Should be in a 58 holder. I looked at the one and only 58 when it was for sale at Heritage and it did absolutely nothing for me.
With regard to the 1914-S Quarter that Doug bought at the Chicago pre ANA Heritage auction last August, a little background on the coin...
How often have you heard that Teletrade is the "dumping ground" for coin dealers ? So many "dealers in the know" are such snobs at times, they "poo-poo" a coin because it came out of a "2nd class" on line auction. That has always riled me - and I have stopped dealing with dealers who critisize any coin with out actually seeing it - and have told them so. "We're done here" when I hear nonsence like that.
So, when the elusive 14-S Quarter appeared on a Teletrade auction, back in April, 2000, I snapped it up, even though it was already in an NGC 58 holder. I saw no reason it wouldn't cross at PCGS, and I was correct.

Mike, thanks for the background info on the 14-S quarter. It's a great coin that I'm proud to own! Any dealer that has an attitude toward one auction venue or another is an idiot. The coin is all that matters, I've added many great coins to my set from Teletrade.
I've never seen a 01-S quarter in AU that I liked, so I'll have to be content with my VF20 for now. I feel the rarity of the three barber quarter keys in high circulated grades enhances the set. If a 01-S quarter of the same quality as my 14-S ever came to auction it would probably bring MS63 or 64 money.

Basically , the same thing happened to me at another table - this dealer had a smattering of NGC Barber Halves - and all were in G 6 to VG 10. He was interested - but only at Grey Sheet prices.
