Well, someone here or there, decided to make me pay a bunch for this coin. I'm glad to say, I have crossed the 1910 off my list though. It's in strong hands for a while now.
LogPotato pointed me in the direction of this raw Half the other day; I was on the fence about it only because I had just bought the same date at the last Stack's Bowers Sale in a PCGS 50 holder.
Here's the coin Justin mentioned to me - I hope to submit it - and think it'll "40"... [ even on a bad day...]

I received a voice mail this morning from Walt Kennedy, my old 1901-S Quarter ( PCGS - AU 55 ) is on eBay now.
Sorry if this sounds like SPAM, but I have no connection with the seller. Just throwing it out there if anyone is interested .... He's asking $38K + ... But is taking offers.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Just noticed that the Heritage web site is showing a HUGE number of gem and better barber halves just beggining to be listed for the Central States show auction. There are a lot of MS6's in PCGS and NGC plastic, and even more of both in MS 65. None of these are my coins, and few, if any, would be upgrades for me, but since I will be going to that show, I will have an eye-feast looking at them at lot viewing.
I checked out the Halves - not too much for my modest little set at the moment at Central States. I found some upgrades but nothing that I am dying to have.
I am bidding on an upgrade on the current auction - in NYC. - and I am good with that. EDIT:
Which I won !!!!
Not the finest Barber I have ever handled - but a perfect fit for the current set...
I hope to do well in Baltimore at our table ( you are right down the same aisle from me ). I will have the 11-S/s in PCGS 66 with me, FYI.

Just to bump this sleeping thread, there is an absolutely gorgeous 13-S quarter in PCGS VG10 on eBay this morning, as wholesome as I've ever seen, plump facial features and toned mid grey that everyone loves. To the point where I momentarily thought about maxing out my Paypal just to hold it in person. Until my cooler head prevailed. Then I looked at the pop report.... That's a pop 81 coin in 10!! Are there 81 complete set builders? Certainly a paradox of keys- prices keep going up, more coins come out to play.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
I don't do quarters, that said that one is nice and about as high a grade as I'd try to do the keys (maybe F-12). I have seen enough 13-S's in my life that I truly believe it rides the coattails of the other two keys. And I wish I had put away half a roll of G/VG's 25 years ago.

Mike, thanks for the call last week, great hearing from you and catching up!
If I had a set of XF40 Barberhalves like that 1909, I could die a a happy man. I don't know much about green beans, but a green bean on a common date XF Barber half prob. seems odd to those who don't appreciate how rare that 'common date' is to find looking like that (attractive to my eyes anyways).
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
Ken, nice 02s, one of my top 5 nemesis dates in mid grades!
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
Last night I received a call from a friend alerting me to an upgrade I've been searching for. As a matter of fact, another friend and I were just discussing this date when I got the call.
The coin had just been listed moments before - I'm amazed my friend spotted it so quickly.
Knowing this thread is stuck - I will post the image in awhile.
This is an upgrade for my F-15 ... Thx again, Walt !!
Great speaking with you as well. Glad to hear that the very slow road to recovery has begun. Your Family and your beliefs have pulled you thru this ordeal. I think often of the time spent in Virginia visiting your beautiful family and the pride that shone from your eyes spoke volumes.
Our trip visiting your friend, Mr. Morgan, is an experience I will carry with me for many years to come.
Anyone who may be taking the ANA Summer Seminar Part Two - The Coinage of Charles Barber - will be told how "UMAKEM" & "ELBESAAR" stumbled into one of the largest and highest graded collections just about any one has ever heard of.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I submitted for "Cross at any grade" , an ANACS 1894-S graded VF 35. The other day, I was informed that it crossed as a VF 20. I shall refrain from any opinion at the moment.
I have another 1894-S also graded by PCGS as a VF 20 and was hoping the ANACS coin would cross as a VF 30. Guess when the newly crossed coin returns, I'll image both and see what y'all think.
Not to be downhearted, I decided to just buy a PCGS coin in a grade I want.
Here's the newp for the mid grade collection...
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Yes, Realone. Based on my findings, the size and the shape of, as well as the positioning of, your S mint mark, are identical to the 1894-S's I have examined. I am no dyed in the wool expert as I am just a collector, like you. I have owned at least a half dozen ( +/- ) of this date in grades F12 to AU 58. All of my mint marks' images seem to be the same size & shape. Distinctly different from the 1893 & 1895.
Just one question, how many Reverse Dies were used in 1894 at the San Francisco Mint ? This question will throw a shadow on your premise that the Full Reverse Brockage Half Dollar that you own is actually from 1894.
Good luck getting our Host to agree with you. As far as I know, your Half is unique for the type, isn't it ? I'd be happy to own it, regardless of whether or not it could be attributed to a specific date.
I am through discussing this. I just can't continue fine tuning this coin. The coin is über cool - what more can I say. But, yes, I am on board with it being an 1894-S - unless I missed another date that has the exact mint mark punch - and again, my collection is/was but a fraction of what coins from San Francisco are still available.
Maybe some day you can display the Half Dollar Brockage error at a BCCS Booth at a national convention. Possibly the Philadelphia ANA this August ? I'd bring my Brockage 1898 Quarter and my Die Cap 1895-O Dime. The three coins together would be a great display.
For what it's worth, I'll have my two major errors with me in Baltimore. I'll be at table 310. ( Thursday thru Saturday ).
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Glad I was able to assist - but your task was a daunting one - and I can understand why you wanted to find out which date - and if it meant so much to you - then by all means continue your quest.
PM funtion turned off. Sorry.

If anyone here won the raw AU 97s Half on eBay this afternoon, congrats! I gave serious consideration to that having a shot at being the first 58 in a PCGS holder. It was lovely from the images, and hammered at a reasonable price. The accompanying 95-s from the same seller was possibly even more gorgeous, but in my estimation looked to have lots of wipelines on the obverse. But wow! To see material like that come up was a treat amongst all the garbage that usually dominates those BH pages on the Bay.

Missed the auction completely - ... &... you're right, Chris, its a nice coin - but I wouldn't bet the bank that it gets into a 58 holder at PCGS - what's up with the stains on the obverse ?
I gottta find that 95-S now...
Not a bad coin either - I think it'll grade - but you really need to see the coin in hand before you say it'll grade or not.

Careful, for your eyes!! Someone suggested this. Probably won't help much.
The story is they belonged to bridesmaids in a 1903 wedding. As the years passed, each coin was passed to a survivor until there were none. They ended up with a coin dealer several years ago and one of the coins ended up on the Bay. I bid more and the subsequent conversation led to me acquiring the "set". I, of course, wanted the complete necklaces. Unfortunately, the chains were already melted, must have brought a whopping $2 then. What a difference the wedding being held a couple of years earlier could have made to my addition to this thread.

Justin,
I swear it wasn't I... I did look at it - but I have a VF 25 already. Plus the 1910- Phila issue never comes cheaply.
I did however pick up two upgrades: 1913-D & 1915-D - both in PCGS XF 40.
Someone brought my MAX Bid to bear on the 13-D.
Considering I walked out of the Sarasota show with Nada... this auction made up for it.
Now, I have two more coins to bring to Baltimore... my old 13-D in PCGS VF 30 and the 15-D also in 30.
