Elevation and angle... minga... I can see how something can look good eyeballing it under the lights, but once it is in the slab, does no one look at it?

Here's my latest sub back from PSA today...very pleased overall with the high % of 9s though I really thought I had at least a 10 in there somewhere. These were all pulled from mini wax packs (about a box's worth) over the last couple of months..highlights were not one, but two PSA #459s, representing more than 1/4 of the total 9s graded to date, and PSA 9 Morlan, another very tough card.

Phenomenal sub. A pair of 9s on the 459 on one sub, which was a 5 pop ever before that.

Some of those from the box I sold you? You hit extremely similar 9s, including the 463 as I did (I also hit on 459).

    Very nice sub!!!

Thanks! These were as nice a bunch of minis as I've ever pulled out of packs...was really hoping to also get a 9 on the Lockwood, but am happy with a higher-end 8, as that card is tough to even get holdered these days.

Thanks again, fellas! Yeah, pulling two PSA 9 #459s was great but I raised the pop report by 40% in one sub, so maybe not so great, lol..

Jim, yes, I believe a number of these packs were in fact from that box I bought from you a couple of years back...the AL Championship cards were the cleanest I'd ever seen right out of the pack...

The MVP cards were amazing out of those packs as well. I hit a 10 on a banks and a whole lot of 9s as well.

    Really!?!?

I thought the same thing given its size. Based on Dakillo's and other's experiences in the last two months, it would probably be deemed min size today. But, it sure has a clean photo, and great clarity and color.

Awsome sub! Great job also on 313 (Leading Fireman). I'm struggling to find one that would grade out at even an 8.

    $34 for a Graig Nettles psa 8 ?!?!?

Mid-30's is typical for that card in an 8. The card has PD issues typically (snow in photo), and a larger following than just mini collector's as you know, which taken together, drives up the price on that one.

Jim, my understanding is that case was one of the REA cases. Do you know anything about its origin? That price was quite robust indeed. I won the partial box of 30 72 OPC wax for a decent price..

  • Sensational sub!! #512 Larry Milbourne PSA 8 is a tough one as well, though I'm certain you were hoping for a 9 on that one image You had a pretty amazing box! I wonder if this latest Mini case at $22K has a case number similar to the one that yielded the box you purchased from Jim? Would be worth every penny if it had boxes of cards like those you found!

No, it was a dog case, 212351, same as the board break from years ago and several that I have personally seen (and owned).

To give you an idea, I paid more for an opened and badly water damaged case (that Grote's box came from) than I did for the sealed, intact cases (212351). It helped that I had gotten in a car and went to inspect the case in person prior. Right through the wax you could see how well centered they were (just like you can see garbage as well).

  • A bit ironic that the water damaged item turned out to be one of the better cases. What a shame that one of the best cases sustained the water damage. Impressive that you went to inspect the case and found "the diamond in the rough". Gracious of you to sell one of the boxes knowing what was likely inside image

Jim is always great to deal with! I've had some good success with the boxes I've acquired over the years--a couple from Duncan, one from Jim and a cherry box that I picked up raw on ebay for the insane amount of just $850! (A risk that was rewarded!) I've also noticed that some of the better boxes are the ones with the packs facing backside out so you can't see who's showing or how the card is centered.

At some point I will go digging through the bubbled and cratered cards for giggles and post some scans, but there were a bunch of heartbreakers... An otherwise near perfect Munson, Hegan, Watson (that whole color combo row was bullseyed in those boxes). A Brett every bit as well centered as my 9... but the remains were well worthwhile.

If you can picture the case, the top 8 boxes were completely clean (the packs were). The actual boxes of the top 4 were clear, the second 4 were a little wavy on bottom, but the packs were ok. The outer boxes on the second level had significant water damage, the middles less so. The bottom four were literally stuck to the case and misshapen. It goes back to the earlier thought though, having seen the packs, I based my final bid on 10~ boxes salvagable. I probably wound up a little bit better than that and would buy the case again in a second.

Hey guys, I noticed Ron Burgandy has a Brett 9 for $525 on his sale list. It's item 193 on his list from a sub he just got back. I've had good luck buying from him and thought you would like to know. Take care. Doug

Did anybody notice the super nice mini registry set called "Bumchex?" I think it was just listed in the last day or so. It's at 50% and very impressive. Yount and Brett in 10. I wonder if it's the same person with the retired set by the same name? The former set was before my time on here.

For anyone who can shed light on this:

On the registry, specifically what does it mean when you bump up or down a notch due to "Composite definition changed"?

This happens frequently...once a month or so...and either bumps you up or down one place.

    Thanks!

    Dave

a few things could make that happen.... a person adds/deletes their set or a new card is added to the composite (this happens with player collections mostly)

  • I think it relates to changes in the weight given each card in the set. The current composition is detailed in a link at the top of the given registry page.

Thanks for the info...that makes perfect sense after looking at the link. Also, TBP, I agree that the addition of a card would affect the composition also however, having only collected the '75 minis I knew that couldn't be the case.

I will maintain the dignity of this forum and simply say that I disagree with the following determinations. This is four of the 12 non red/yellow or green yellows. While all are 80mm or better, the Dave Chalk really takes the cake at 81mm.

Meanwhile, anyone interested in a nice 77.5mm Bonds? It somehow got holdered as a solid 8 (clearly not by me).

5 9s and 1 10 on the Tolan. Best guess, somewhere between 2-300 atm.

From the pack rip on the BST thread. Very nice packs overall. The Seaver is really nice.

  • These just came back from PSA. What are your opinions on the Burleson getting to a 8 if I crack and resub?

  • Clearly the snow was to much for the grader. However, I can't see how you give this card a 7? I would not have any problems what so ever if this card received an 8 or even 8.5. Given the sharp corners and edges and the centering of the card being very nice (especially for this card!).

Nice Tolan! Once upon a time that Burleson was a lock 8, in recent years they have been brutal on print defects.

  • I guess I should try again, the worst it could come back is a 7.

Agreed that the treatment of minis has been brutal lately - but wouldn't an 8(PD) be worse than solid 7?

Centering is very nice on the Burleson but snow on the surface is a bit heavy for a straight 8, imo...I think the half grade bump is made for that card and can see it in a 7.5 holder.

I'd love to see a Burleson in an 8 or above holder that does not have that very same PD. I mean that sincerely. I haven't seen one in any condition without it.

On whether or not to re-grade, I would say if it's for your personal collection, leave it alone. It's a very nice example of that card. If you're going to sell it or if it's for your registry set and you need it in and least an 8 to meet your registry goals, then crack and re-submit it. I sold a full-sized 7 that looked just like yours this past August (or July) for $15. That value in a 7 with a substantial upside for the card in an 8 makes it worthwhile $-wise to crack and re-submit a few times.

    Good luck!
