Anyone have an extra 304 Pirates Team card they would sell? I'd prefer an 8 or better, but a 7 or 9oc would be ok.

    Thanks much.

  • Just picked up the twin brother to Jim's #600 Rod Carew PSA 9 from (Calinick). Amazing how he had 3 Carew's looking so nice. Cert#'s (last 3 digits) 782 (Duff),783 (Indy),784 (MiniMaster). I think Indy has the best 8 of #600. Surprising two of them get 9's and the 8, which has a hint of white lower right corner (which is allowable in a 9) doesn't get at least an 8.5? Thank You Calinick! Keep them coming!

Nice job on that Carew, MM! I saw it pop up on eBay, and figured it would go real quickly.

I'm really happy with my 8; I saw it while sitting on the train ride home from work and couldn't hit the BIN quickly enough. I have recently graded 9's of other mini's in my collection that don't look as nice as that Carew 8.

I also purchased the Rose mini #320 and the Ryan mini #500 from Calinick. They look like they came from the same print run/case as the Carews, especially the Ryan (judging from the back scan, which shows a similar tilt and similar centering). The Ryan has a bit of a diamond cut to it (a bit more prominent than the Carew's diamond cut), but I swear, it's as clean and clear as any Ryan I've ever seen. I took a look at past sales and images of the Ryan's in PSA 8 and PSA 9 on VCP, and this Ryan looks as good as many 9's, which incidentally also have a similar diamond cut. As soon as I have the new cards in hand, I'll post pics of them.
  • No problem, I almost kept the last Carew. Unfortunately my horde of mini's has dwindled significantly as of late(at least the minty ones). I'm in the process of going back through them all trying to find any hidden gems I may have missed. I'm confident I can put together at least one or two more nice subs to PSA. image

Had a bigger sub pop today -- not so pleased with results. A few good ones, but I had hoped for better. No let up on sizing standards (for sure). Most of these came from another board member - Julen23. Surprised about the 5's, but Yount had a dimple.....

    Bosox,

Any chance you can sell me that #42 Coleman in PSA 8? One of a handful I need to complete a set.

    Best,

    Matt

PM sent-- actually a few more I really badly need in that sub. Gimme a holler if you're selling. THANKS.

    Hey Guys,

Does anyone out there have a #601 Beniquez in ANY GRADE? Thanks.

    Hey BoSox,

Still looks good overall, but I can understand your frustration with all the min sizes. In fact, it has me worried about a few that I submitted that are borderline. I see a few gems in there, however (e.g., Terry Hughes - $200 card in PSA 8), that make it good sub.

The Tigers team is tough. It sometimes comes a hair short in my experience along with others that were printed on the same sheet (e.g., Expos team, Jose Cardinal, Steve Rogers, and others - see page 7 of this thread for a photo of the sheet I'm talking about). I have a Tigers team in my latest submission that is just 1/10 mm under 80 mm. I hope it goes through okay.

Good luck on the sales of those if you're selling.
  • Some really nice cards there BoSox.

    Tough on the N6's

im still looking for an 8.5/9 Munson to no avail

With my previous sub, and now this sub by BoSox as well -- it is apparent that the MinSizeRq hammer is being brought down hard. I see some in your list as well that are not green/yellow and red/yellow natural shorts.

This is one of several in which I'm at a loss to explain. And for full disclosure, its nearly a full millimeter over the standard width of 57mm.

wow -- three Schmidt N6s. Rough
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I've measured over 350 minis in my collection. Cards that appear to adequatly fill the current holder.......measure 80.5 to 81mm. Cards from one particular ebay seller generally measure 80mm on the button from my sample.

If I'm reading your ruler correctly, the Allen measures vertically at about 79.5 mm.

Since I don't have an engineer's caliper graduated to the 10th of a millimeter, I rely on my eyes and two simpleton devices - a ruler and flexible tape. To me, the Dick Allen show appeared to be pretty damn close to 80mm.

I'm not calling for a fight at recess, but I would like to make the following point:

Any number of sources indicate that the '75 mini cards were measured in standard units, 3 1/8" x 2 1/4". The conversion for 3 1/8" is 79.375mm. Somewhere during the discussion, 80mm became the colloquial term and, for sake of clarity, I would prefer they all measured 80mm to avoid this problem. BUT, if there is going to be an argument about whether or not a card can simply be eligible for a grade, then I would like to stick to 3 1/8" or 79.375mm.

Regardless, this doesn't explain the two others that I have measuring 80.5 and almost 81.

I think your grade was fixated on the reason that girl dumped him the night before.

Thanks guys. I too was surprised to see some of the cards that got N6's - definitely not just green/yellows (not to mention the EOTs).

I am hoping that they get to Chicago by Saturday; I'll post some scans when they do arrive.

    Most will be available.

For now, here were the two 10's, Sutherland and Fuller - which were nice cards, but not the ones that I would have guessed would grade out as 10's:

I'm going to take a different shot at this:

Your Allen is not likely pack pulled. There is almost no variation in width in minis and cards that are noticably wide likely are sheet cut. Rather than call it that, PSA seems to use the n6 as a catch all, which is confusing, but also generous as you get a voucher for it. They could also call it miscut, but you dont see all that many of those used.

Nice Fuller, I am not sure I would have guessed the Sutherland as a 10. Take it and run :-)

Exactly Jim. At least 20 cards were nicer. Ah well, subjectivity is always in play...

I'm not calling for a fight at recess, but I would like to make the following point:

And neither am I. I've measured many, many cards using nothing but a clear plastic ruler and a magnifying glass as means of protecting myself and adapting to how PSA treats the mini's. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is based on the alleged past practices of others trimming mini's. I think I've gotten really good at measuring cards using nothing but a ruler and a magnifying glass so I can be precise as I can be (you have to be - a trimmer can easily trim a few tenths of a mm), and it's worked very well for me. If I have to adapt further and use calipers, then so be it. Now although I haven't submitted as many mini's as most on here (somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-125 in the last two years), by measuring the cards the way I do and being completely objective about it and not submitting anything less than 79.75 mm if not a bit longer, I've yet to receive an N6 or EOT. Now with my latest sub of 25, I am worried as a few are perhaps a tenth of a mm below 80 mm, but we'll see. These are yellow/red combos, which I've seen before in rough cards to be very slightly (1/10 mm) under 80 mm.

These so called "standards" of 2-1/4" by 3-1/8" are all over the internet. But, where do they come from? Perhaps someone used the inches version of a ruler and rounded to these amounts. However, I've yet to see an official document from Topps with these numbers. So, I don't buy the inches measurement after having measured 100's and 100's of mini's using a metric ruler. I believe my eyes, and what I see is that the typical mini other than red/yellow or green/yellow ranges from a hair less than 80 mm up to 81 mm or greater. I've seen the higher end of 81 mm mostly in the pink/yellow and tan/blue. Most mini's are a few tenths of a mm above 80 mm or right at it. This is what I go by, it works for me, and I feel like I've done all I can to protect myself.

...completely objective about it and not submitting anything less than 79.75 mm if not a bit longer, I've yet to receive an N6...

There exists a slightly higher than normal level of frustration from myself and other regarding recent submissions. In the several months I've participated in this forum, it would appear the last two months have brought more gripes regarding "tough" grades than ever previous.

In the end, Indy, you and I will agree on most everything - and I wasn't trying to vent my frustrations on you.

Hey D, No problem, and I understand. I've felt the same frustrations lately with the Print Defect (PD) issue. And I definitely agree that the last few months have been tougher as far as getting the grades I expected.

Anyway, it's still a great set. And you've done an amazing job building yours in such a short period of time. I've enjoyed watching your progress with it.

    Cheers,
    Nick

Unless the left edge is an illusion from the scan, I'd say you did quite well to get a 10 on the Sutherland. And the Fuller is centered a bit high, imo, too. Some tough grades in there with a few nice ones mixed in. I'm noticing that they are giving minsize to color combos other than the usual red and green yellows. As Nick said, the grading does seem to cycle through different periods. Nice job on the better grades, Mike! Always a thrill to self-submit a PSA 10 from this set!

3 1/8 comes from beckett once upon a time and others followed. 3 1/8 happens to be a shorty. Normal minis are 3 3/16. It is that misperception that allowed so many non normal shorts to slip by.
Interestingly, I have 4 green/yellow topps vault proofs, all are 3 1/8, straight from topps and are obviously short.

I own and sometimes use a micrometer. I also use a simple cheat: I crack out so many cards, that I always keep a half slab handy and use it as a measure to see if a card will fill it.

    Mini Case Thread

There's an interesting thread about that case in the Sports Cards and Memorabilia forum.

Yes, we were trying to get that case to do a case break on the board, but it's already gone too high with BP...Conlon family left a lot of money on the table by selling all those cases in bulk rather than parceling them out.

The Ryan just came in the mail today. But for a mild diamond cut, it would have been a 9 IMO, which I wouldn't have bought anyway, as my wife would never have let me hear the end of it. This one has perfect corners, clear register, and deep coloration. I'm very pleased with this card the way it is. Thank you Calinick/Stangrider!

Those cards with the slight diamond cuts end up hurting my eyes. Not because they are so visually unappealing or anything like that but because it's hard for me to "see it". To my eyes, it almost seems like an optical illusion resulting from the different colors on the top and bottom of the cards.

Here are a few scans from this week's poppage.

Probably nothing new: tough on shorts (although I am going to measure most, all of the non green/yellows are clearly longer than the g/y's) and tough on any pd (bummer on the Tommy D and Carew, the 9 pd Claudell wasn't too surprising). Some head-scratchers on 7's too - I'll have to look closer.

Regarding the Tommy Davis, Ed Goodson and Dave Rader, are the print defects for these three cards assumed to be snow?
  • Bosox1976Bosox1976 Posts: 8,557 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, snow --- Carew too I guess.

Has anyone at PSA ever considered that Tommy Davis had a nasty case of dry scalp?

I posted on the b/s/t board and just thought I'd mention here but if anyone is selling some extras from recent opened product I could use some. Feel free to drop a pm. Thanks!

    Here is my post:

I got a raw set I'm looking to improve a bit.

I'm interested in some decent nm to nm/mt cards or close to it if possible depending on the card (I know some of these are expensive in nm/mt and want to keep costs in check).

    I am looking for #'s 1, 16, 20, 29, 33, 53, 64, 82, 86, 136, 137, 139, 140, 161, 178, 186, 250, 262, 268, 269, 277, 329, 331, 350, 355, 399, 414, 434, 440, 444, 450, 458, 471, 514, 550, 557, 558, 574, 590, 605,
    612, 626, 647, 649, 650, 654, and 659.

    Thanks for any help,

    aconte

Can anyone further explain "N8: Miscut" by PSA? I understand an MC qualifier, but why would it be rejected as a miscut?

    Thank you in advance.

Man, was just looking at this bad boy for a while and felt compelled to take a new scan and share it again. To me this card is a thing of beauty. Especially when compared to the other 10s. He was such an awesome player. Second scan is better rez.

Welcome aboard, Hallco...be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.

Just popped my latest PSA submission...again, I'm mixed. Got some tough 8's to fill holes in my set, but one more time got my a$$ kicked with minimum size requirements - 35% of my sub. Like last time, several of these were not green/yellow and red/yellow combos.

I'm feeling a bit more bent this time because this comes on the heels of the December order which was littered with N6's, so I was careful to ensure each was a legitimate full size (with the exception of three that were just so close I had to try). Then the end result was 39 of 113 were rejected.

We may never see certain cards in any holder, let alone a 9 holder, again.

I was looking through some VCP data and there are just SO many commons that are not notorious by name, yet have not been offered for sale in PSA 9 since 07, 08, 09. That is a long time.

  • DakilloDakillo Posts: 158 ✭✭
To the point of your comment Matt, I did pop some difficult 9's (Cosgrove, Borgmann, Cusick, etc) but they were all (PD) or (OC).
