Whoever scores the first 10 on the Young Steele version (or Clark) hits the jackpot
    tough, tough cards
I've pretty much given up my own search of factory sets

What do you think a Schmidt Steele PSA 10 (1/1) might fetch?
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Been a long time since I was on these boards. Way back to when we pooled our money and bought 84 Donruss boxes as a group and before we had the first 100% complete 84 donruss set in PSA 9! Nice to see some activity again. I have had my set on a slow burner and have added to it from time to time. I am going to try to make it more of a priority.

    Spahnfan,

As a long time Braves fan from the Milwaukee days, this is for you.

"Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain"

    First we'll use Spahn
    then we'll use Sain
    Then an off day
    followed by rain
    Back will come Spahn
    followed by Sain
    And followed
    we hope
    by two days of rain.

Where do you obtain the Steele vs Steel versions? Was one issued in factory sets and the other wax?

    Thanks,

I went thru a couple of factory sets this weekend and have 2 decent Clark's. I'm planning to sub this month. I also picked up some rack packs last week. Just now opened them. No star power out of 3 racks but a few gradeable commons. May not be worth submitting depending on the pop counts.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

Yelbom, holy cow! I just saw the hammer on that Young PSA 9. Outstanding. Is that normal for low pop 9s?

I was cleaning out some of my childhood stuff at my parent's house this weekend and found a 5000 ct box filled with pack fresh 84 Donruss cards. These were literally put in the box back in 84 or 85 when I collected them as a kid. I flipped through them briefly tonight and for the most part they were MINT. I know everyone says that, but these actually still had that new pack smell. Anyway, since you guys are the experts, what cards should I be looking for? I have no plans to hold on to them, so anything I find will eventually be available for sale.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Go to the pop report for 84 Donruss. That should give you the info you need. The lower the pops for a grade of 10, the more they are worth.

Im not putting this set together but i had to break in and say this is the BEST SET bar none in the 1980's. Love it and will have to get a raw set just to hang on too and look at.

New guy here. I used to buy 84s in the day. They, are long gone. The set was great and I started buying PSA graded cards recently.

My question is this: Do PSA pop. reports really reflect the true scarcity of the cards ? A card with a pop of 15 with 40 submissions is not as rare as a card with a pop of 15 and 100 submissions, correct?

So does the report showa true scarcity "ratio" if you will ?

  • Options
    mikeschmidtmikeschmidt Posts: 5,756 ✭✭✭
it depends on if you are talking common or star...

Stars will have a higher # of submissions. With commons, if there are fewer submissions than other commons, it is quite likely that the card is consistently off-center or have some other issue preventing MINTY freshness.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

concur that there are several "commons" that are often OC.....my experience a few years back when I put together a PSA 9 set was that Greg Gagne was the hardest to find......alas that set was broken up and sold......I often get tempted to get back into this set but finances keep holding me back even though many of the cards have come down in price....for PSA 9 that is.

What is up with some of the prices on Ebay for PSA 10s. $299.95 for a Dempsey?? Are all these ones that are price high low population cards??

It has been an amazing journey watching 1984D psa 10 pricing over the past 8 or 9 years. Biggest $$$$ I saw was a low pop common $1700+ was several years ag. That's just flat out crazy money, but hey, if you got it - flaunt it!!

The prices wee high for about 8 months as two individuals were in a bidding war for the PSA 10's that they needed. Many people look at that and think those prices are still there. They simply are not. I won't disclose who the two (maybe three) bidders were, but you can be sure that those days are over. One of the two has completed the set in all PSA 10's and the other lacks very few with no real bidding competition like in 2008 and early 2009.

Prices for some common cards were as high as $1700 during the bidding war due to the lack of 10's. Hope this helps.
