HI Bill, long time to speak, I was going thru the threads and saw that we had discussed volleyball years ago.....sad news, my daughter gave it up after freshman year, to her the game became more a glamour thing, and she didn't fit in the clique (not sure if I spelled that word correctly). anyways she now plays basketball and is going into her senior year. She started as a junior and should start again in the fall. I know we talked about this and your volleyball experiences.....also my son in now a junior at Ohio U...he also played basketball in high school.....looking back thru the thread brought back many memories.....hope all is well with you and family.
Not sure what to say.. very interested in starting this set and I have alot of the HOFer's already. Im sure there are some very difficult commons. Looking to do a well centered set in 8,9,10....id rather have a well centered 8 then a O/C 9. Anybody have any nice 9's that dont want for their 10 set? Let me know. I know I will probably have to use ebay but id love to pick up a few lots here as well. Let know if anybody has extra!!
Just finished reading this entire thread. What a crazy ride. 84donruss was a great set. Kind of sad to see so many original builders drop out. I wonder what ever happened to arny? He seemed so passionate for so long. Did he drop out of the hobby? Well, I just wanted to say I posted on this monumental thread.
Getting rid of most of my bb cards, most everything I have. Got a bunch of leftover 1984D psa 9's for cheap. Give me a holler if you want to buy in bulk.

I always wanted to collect this set but never put in a real initial effort. One of if not the best sets of the 1980's for sure.
Can anyone who collects this set enlighten me here. I always liked the look of this set, and based on the prices and auctions I saw, didn't think it would be too expensive. Now I'm only looking at 10's, but I'm seeing auctions completed for most cards in the $10 range. Most of the sellers are asking 3X that amount. Am I missing something here? Is there something that I'm not aware of? Thanks.
Joe
does it mean that just because the card is graded......because someone graded it thinking it would be higher.....does that increase the value just because someone spent to have it graded. Common cards are common cards, and if recent auctions show they are selling for X dollars, then they are worth X dollars. The market is limited for those.
Sellers will typically BIN at higher prices than those running a straight auction. Also, pricing depends on demand. Sometime after I sold my all psa9/psa10 set back in 2007 (I think), prices for some tough commons and diamond kings went thru the roof. At one point a psa 10 Chris Chambliss sold for around $2k. A Mike Schmidt DK Steele sold for around $3k if remembering correctly. Some of the old timers here will remember other examples of HUGE money thrown at commons. Why such big money? Because at one point around 2008-2010 competition was mega-intense to be the first to complete an all-psa10 set. After several Basic sets were completed in all psa 10, prices started to fall to where they are today.

Nice Joe Carter rookie! I opened a lot of 84 donruss and all the Carter's
I got were really off center.
I remember the Beckett annual guide saying "the Joe Carter card is almost never found well centered"...so to get one in PSA 10 is quite a prize! How many are known to exist? I bet no more than a few dozen.
I'm guessing that there was so much product then that, eventhough it is tough to find centered, there will be a good number out there In PSA 10. Also since it's well known as a hot rookie card, everyone is looking out for it a swell.
Still fairly new to this set in graded form....anyone wanting to sell off some 10's, I'd be interested. Thanks. Joe
I'm past the submission phase; I have many of these that are pack fresh and look great but still don't bring a 10, so I'm just buying 10's for now. Maybe as I get closer to completing the set, I'll look at some submissions. I am interested in any 10's you might want to sell, so PM me with a list and we'll see if we can work something out.
softparade, I have thousands of high grade 84 Donruss. Lots of unopened cello bricks from factory sets and lots of raw. I would be happy to help you out. I have two of the highest sets on the registry. Let me know if you are interested.

I haven't posted anything here for a while, so I'll try another request. I'm putting together an 84 DONRUSS all PSA 10 set; I started about a year and a half ago. I'm about halfway through, and would be looking to purchase any that I need for my set. I have a post on the B/S/T thread, but gotten very little response. I'm interested in as few or as many as you want to sell. I'd like to get to 3/4 complete or better by the end of the year. Let me know if interested. Thanks.
If anyone is interested in starting an all PSA 9 registry set, shoot me a PM. I have somewhere near 100 PSA 9's including several star/hof players. Time for a new home...

All 84D, 84D Champions, and 85D has been sold off. The only thing left is some raw and a 84D Champions case. After that is gone, nothing left. With the uptick in grading prices , my registry days are now officially over..
I realize there's not much activity in this thread, but I can't help but wonder what is going on with the Mattingly card from this set. Within the past year and a half, the pricing on this card has gone from around $1000 to now where you can't get one for under $5K. I understand that he's a favorite and that it is his rookie card, but it just seems crazy. Yes I know the market is going haywire, but this makes no sense to me. Am I missing something here?
I've subbed four Mattingly 10's over the years, and sold 3 of them for $600, $800, and $1250. I think the Mattingly craze is based on these things: 1) it's 84 Donruss, arguably most popular 1980's set, 2) He's a Yankee, 3) kinda had a Mantle-type following in NY, 4) minimal amount of 10's compared to 9's.
About #4: I put this in same category as the 1980 rickey henderson. WHY are there so few 10's? Centered examples aren't that hard to find. PSA seems overly sensitive to giving 10's to these 2 cards, and I'm not convinced the reasoning is completely valid.
i just don't know. There certainly is no shortage of this card on EBAy and other sites for sale. I guess anyone whose been holding one is putting it up and cashing in on the mania
I was worried about spending over a grand about a year ago for a non-HOF rookie, eventhough Mattingly has always been a favorite. Figured I would buy mine and the price would drop. I believe my caution has prevented me from ever owning one of these. Can't justify paying $5K......and the price keeps on rising to boot.
OK you 84 Donruss people. Looking to finish off the 300 series of this set in PSA 10. Missing 8 cards. Nothing real scarce but just haven't seen any of these. Looking for # 300,301,308,314,350,378,382 and 389. Anyone looking to sell, let me know. PSA 10 only. Thanks.
Sorry, but I had to get out my frustration here. I saw a Gary Redus, PSA 10, a 40 pop card, listed on EBAY for $40. IMO a bit overpriced for a common in that pop. I offered him $35; he writes back no thanks. That's fine, except for the fact that he then takes card down and relists with a price of $80!!!!!! I just don't get it.
