I am going to retire in August and was talking about it with another staff member. I met this staff member 21 years ago and while we didn't work in the same department, we frequently collaborated on various projects. I try to keep a low profile and there are very few individuals that know that I collect coins. During our discussion she asked me what I was going to do. I told her that I would be spending some time liquidating my coin collection. Not that I planned to "go" anytime soon, but my daughters really have no interest in collecting and I don't want to burden them with the task. In addition, I have started liquidating since May and have been enjoying the process (which is not entirely about the money). Doesn't mean that I won't continue to buy anything, I am just getting my collection down to a more manageable size and leaning toward the box of 20 concept which my daughters could easily handle with instructions.

She then proceeds to tell me how her mother used to work for a coin dealer (this was over 40 years ago) and that many times her pay was coins. She said she has a lot of coins left to her by her mother and would I be interested in looking at them. She said that she has many coins dated in the 1800's and rolls and rolls of silver dollars that she knows are worth about $2-3 each.

I asked her if she wanted $2-3 dollars for each of her silver dollars and she said: "That would be fine"

And I said ...

I will select the best response and send that person a Peace dollar with some crud on it. The response does not have to be what I actually said. I will be looking for the most creative response.

I will write my actual response after I select the winner.

Listen they're worth 2-3 dollars but you need to figure in my overhead and expenses as well. It will take time to inventory all of this material and if I have it refined the best rate I can get loses me 10% of the value of the coins. I could pay you 2-3 dollars for the key dates but anything other than that I'd only be able to offer you fifty cents per Peace Dollar. I'm sure you understand right?

I am not interested but I know some buyers that will be at the local motel this week. That would be your best bet as they are from out of town which means they would surely pay you top dollar for your coins.

You know I'm not made of money! We've both have worked for this crappy company for decades. Here's what I can do for you... since this group of coins is obviously very heavy, I can pick them up and take them to the CoinStar machine at the Piggly Wiggly. I'll bring you the cash to work tomorrow. Or... if you'd rather lose money, you could take them to one of those rip-off artists that setup at the hotels and probably only get half of what the CoinStar machine will pay!

I would not commit to any price, without first appraising the collection which she speaks of, as it very well could possibly be unfair to her or yourself as the buyer. There is a high level of trust being placed in your hands and eyes in this regard, so please don't under estimate this friendship and trust.

And I said ... The silver alone is worth much more than that. I would be happy to look at them and see if there are any valuable coins in the lot. Since they came from a dealer I would assume that they are pretty much worth the silver content, but one never knows. Also, do not sell them unless you need the money. Silver is going to da moon and.... oh, wait, I forgot that this is not the bullion board.

Except for the last part, I have done this for a few people in my store.

Better sell them right away for whatever you can get as I heard the government is going to confiscate gold and silver any day now. Gold and silver sales are way down in India and the IMF is going to be selling 400 tons soon. Oh, and you can't eat gold or silver. And I said, Well, some of the rolls might be worth more than 2 or 3 dollars -- we'll have to go through the coins and see if any have a small, little "CC" on them. The problem with silver dollars was that the government made too many of them and a lot of them just lay around in mint vaults for decades!
