I haven't done any kind of detail list. I was planning on it but it was extremely time consuming putting on ebay 1 at a time. The Gross sales were just short of 6000 I believe (had a few other sales that month) Pretty good considering the Murray and the Ryans were only 8's. After all the fees still did pretty well. Thanks to all that did participate. - Joel

Congrats Joel, glad you did well with it. Thanks hg3, will look into that one, have lost a few Munsons already. Seem to be finding out when you get near the end, hard to feel like is near the end, it gets much tougher to find what you are looking for.

Looks like Hatch just added the Murray rookie card to his incredible
'78 set as he attempts to be the first registrant to complete a pre-1980
mainstream regular set in all PSA 10 grade........UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Thanks. For those extra cards, I owe a big thanks to another '78 collector who also has an exceptional set from the sixties -- we struck a trade that helped each other. Now, it's back to the hunt for more....unfortunately, the closer I get, the further apart the "finds." Take care.

Just got these back from PSA. Overall I was very pleased...the Murray RC was pulled from a wax pack. All of these cards were pulled from either wax or rack packs.

    Bill,
Let me just say that I'm thankful that this community (you included, of course!) is so helpful to each other's efforts. To date, my set has benefited from the assistance of virtually every collector in the Top 15 list (you guys are great!). I'm anxious to see some possible changes to Mr. G's set....not that I have any inside knowledge, mind you...

Thanks! ...hope you get some top grades. I dropped under "75 to go" recently, but it's obviously a sloooww pace. The 74 I have left to find are all POP3 or less with many POP 0. The odds are against me, and I certainly can't do it without the kind of help you guys give me. Regards,

After an "international" mega-swap last month (MG, thanks for such a fun trade), another tough card has made it into the set....#185 Ellis Valentine POP 1....many thanks to FM. 62 to go. All help invited....I can't do this alone. Fortunately, it's turning into a community objective.

Great job getting those two Sparky Lyle cardsin 10's.....single digit POPs. Schultz too, if I remember correctly.

I hardly ever post in the set registry forum, so my apologies if trolling for cards is considered bad form. On the chance that it's acceptable, I'm in need of two cards to finish up my '78 Dodgers set in 9:

    #145 - Rick Monday
    #508 - Johnny Oates

Thanks in advance for any help.

hey i have a psa 10 1978 topps reggie jackson for sale or trade. Is anyone interested? Please feel free to pm or email me with offers. My email is weitzas@gmail.com. Thanks!

Thanks guys for the nice congratulations. This set is a community effort (with so many cards arriving through trades with other '78 collectors). As a '78 set community, we can all share a bit of the recognition.

    Best regards,

I agree....It's hard to justify the ridiculous eBay prices required to fill spots. However, I have 50 cards (or so) left to reach 100% 10. For every high price card I have to pay for on eBay, I'm spending much less on non-eBay purchases, and sometimes "way" less on submission 10's. If you assume an average price of $200, then multiply times 50 cards, it totals out to $10,000. Add another $7,500 to get the Ryan whenever it shows up, and the total still remains below $20,000 That's a price I'm willing to pay to reach the 100% milestone. I realize it's not a strong investment strategy, but then again, I don't understand how someone can spend over $10,000 on a two-week vacation cruise, ending up with only photographs and a sunburn. Hope that makes sense.

Hatch...I get it! You make perfect sense, as usual.

I was (kiddingly) pleading on your behalf, referencing the fact that there are probably sellers out there who are trying to take advantage of you.

Now, I hope you DO win it!

    Nick and Paul,
Thanks for the support. Despite the cost, the eBay path is providing a more frequent opportunity to upgrade slots (as Paul pointed out). It also turns out to be a lower cost than sending in submissions. For example, for every 1,000 new cards I look at from box rips, only 50 match the slots I need, and of those, only 1 in 10 are at a quality worthy of sending in. I'm currently getting about 35% of my submissions back in a 10 grade. So, in short, I can get 1 to 2 new slots upgraded for every 1,000 cards opened. At 360 cards per $500 wax pack box, it's about $750 to $1,000 per card to go that route (if you exclude the money I could recover by selling material I don't need). On the other hand, if I could get my hands on an unopened case, I'd have a lot more fun. Any idea where there may be a case laying around?
    Take care,
    Hatch

Hatch your set is amazing. I dont see anything on their website but does Larry Fritsch have any cases that they might sell? Good luck in your quest.

Thanks Nick. I think this was also the place/site that Larry Fritsch (that Paul mentioned) was at -- I believe he passed a way a few years ago. I've bought individual rack packs from them, as well as other unopened material. Very good experience dealing with them. Thanks again.

    Wow!
I have not been paying attention to 78s for a year or so. I've been working on the other 70s years. That is one incredible set hatch!! My best wishes as well, could you please keep us updated each time you get closer? Maybe scan the remaning cards as you acquire them? I believe you are close enough for a final countdown and I would like to share the pursuit vicariously. image

I have a general question about the 78's...

I have a decent stack of "mint" 78's that I was think of sending in to PSA. I did a quick look at the pop report and some are low pop 9's and zero pop 10's.

What prices do the low pop 9's command? and the say 0-3 pop 10's?

    TIA Dave

I thought I'd troll here for the last '78 I need to finish up my Dodger set - looking for a Johnny Oates in 9. My apologies if this is frowned on here - I do have a thread up on the BST board as well.
