I had to grab this one - it got a PSA 1 because of the slight paper loss on the back, but the front is an absolute blazer!!

Welcome back, BDB, I was wondering where you disappeared to. What the heck are you doing with those 1970 TOPPS? As always, some very nice stuff!

Thanks for the welcome back...I am a high school Athletic Director and the Fall and Winter sports seasons leave me very little "recreational" time to ebay and visit this forum. Yeah, the Page and Simpson don't really fit my collecting M.O., but I couldn't pass up 2 HOF rookies. At one point, I was collecting the rookie cards of all HOF football players....but I fell in love with the vintage and never looked back....well, every once in a while, like with the Page and Simpson, I glance back!

    WOW!! Great cards Wondo.
  • I had a 1950 George Mikan Menko but I put in up for auction. Its going to be in the Mastronet Primier auction of December 2007. This card is very rarer and its in the same level if not higher then a George Mikan 1950's Scott's Potato Chips card. This is the first Mikan Menko to come up for a Mastronet auction so lets see what it does. I will post scans when I receive my Mastronet catalogimage

Just had my first experience with Steve Hart, in the form of an eBay transaction.

    Wow.

I won the auction Sunday night and it was in my mailbox Wednesday morning. Definitely a great surprise to find.

Might be too modern for some of you blokes, but it's part of my Thomas PSA 10 rookie quest.

Nice pickup, Ross. Steve is great to deal with. I've only bought one card from him but it got to me within a couple of days. And he answered all my questions promptly, which is always a plus.

Some additions to my CYA winners set...

Steve Stone - 1980 AL CYA
Lit him arm up in a season long blaze of glory in 1980, tearing up the league with his curve.... but it killed his arm and he was done in 1982.
Apparently, he made a name for himself in the broadcast booth with the Cubs.
    image

Randy Jones - 1976 NL CYA
Went from 22 losses in 1974 to 20 wins in 75, then 22 wins and the CYA in 76 (racking up 11 shutouts during those two glory years).

Mel Proctor always used to say that Stone sold his soul to win 25 in '80 image

I love the way most of Padres look like they're running for the Senate on their 74 cards.

Good stuff. Downing and McBride on one card is cool and I love that 90L David J. Always have.

This just came in the mail yesterday and WOW, it's even nicer in person! I am shocked this card got a PSA 1. The front should be a 6 at least, and the paper loss is really minimal! I wonder if a second look by PSA would change the grade? Anyone have any experience with paper loss - does it get an automatic 1 for something this minimal??
  • Scott,

Take a look at my E94 Lobert above....small paperloss on the back and it pulled a 4. Some of these just don't make any sense.

Good point Dave; I didn't notice that on yours. The fronts look similar (mine might be a bit better, as your E94 has a dinged top left corner), but the paper loss is similar (mine has a bit more paper loss, but not much).

PSA is at a show near me in a couple of weeks; this card will probably stop by their table at that time...

I love it when I get cards that fit in more than one of my sets..

    Fred Lynn - 1975 MVP & ROY
Exploded on the scene with 21 hrs, 105 RBI, .331 avg, .401 OBP, and a .566 slugging % in his rookie year, earning him the ROY and the MVP awards.

A couple of my more exciting (for me at least) pick ups that arrived this week.

1948 Leaf Doak Walker for my mid-grade, well centered set:

    image

And a Colts mini to go with my HOF of Johnny U:

    image

Now I just need to troll about for a nice 1957 mid-grade PSA rookie to complete the display.

    Have a great weekend all!

    More goodies...

Hall of Fame and 3000 hit club member - Dave Winfield
    image

MVP's, Joe Torre (1971 NL), Barry Larkin (1995 NL)
    imageimage

1984 NL ROY, 1985 NL CYA: Dwight Gooden
The 19 year old Dr. K took the NL by storm in 1984, with a 17-9 record, 276 ks, and a 2.60 era. He finished 2nd in Cy Young voting, but took home the ROY as a consolation prize. The next year he left no room for doubt by taking the NL Pitching Triple Crown (24 wins (8 of them shutouts), 268 K's, and a 1.53 era) and the 1985 NL Cy Young Award.
    image

    Rookies of the Year:
1974 NL - Bake McBride (I downgraded from the 9 I picked up last week)
    image

    1981 AL - Dave Righetti
Only needed 15 games (strike season) to take home the ROY honors with an 8 - 4 record, a 2.05 era, and 89 ks in 105.3 innings.
    image

1998 AL ROY - Ben Grieve
An impressive 1st half (and thin competition) likely won the ROY for him, with 12 hrs, 55 RBI, and a .311 avg by the AS break (and earning him a spot on the AS roster). He settled down in the 2n half and finished the year with 18 hrs, 89 rbi, and a .288 avg.

200 dpi on an HP Scanjet 3970. I try to keep the width of the scans down to 350 pixles, they usually end up around 70 - 90 kb. The Set Registry won't accept anything over 100 kb, so I try to keep them light.

  • An early birthday present courtesy of my wife. This is a fitted Charlotte O's cap similar to the one that Cal would've worn during the '79/'80 seasons that was signed by him 2 years ago. After doing some researching on the "JOE R" written inside the cap I'm guessing that the cap belonged to Joe Redfield during the 1986 season. I have to admit that I'm pretty excited about getting it:
