Beckett sharp again today, 3-0. Where are the doubters now? >>

Right here Jer! Josh, Curt, and D-Mat are off and running while the Yanks stumble around. The ONLY thing I can say in response at this point is that there is a reason baseball is a marathon! We all know that image

Let me add that at this point in time the Red Sox are playing head and shoulders above Yankee level .... I think we are going to find out just how deep the Yankee farm system actually is starting tomorrow night image

I think it is a lot deeper than most Sox fans believe. I say leave the young guys in the minors for another year (PLEASE!)

See, I told you Wily Mo would hit. Unfortunately, no one else decided to help him out tonight.

First time I have seen Dice-K get rattled a bit (on a terrible call), but he came back nicely and Sox pitching only gave up 3 hits.

This is one that we should have won.

I can deal with this kind of loss. One less than stellar inning is an OK thing.

Tough loss, it was nice to see Willy Mo lobby for playing time with his bat!

In 12 games the Sox starting pitchers have given up 2 or less runs 9 times and 3 or less runs 10 times. The offense is inconsistent right now with very little power. The lack of power becomes particularly evident when Ramirez and Ortiz are not hitting.

What is it with Blue Jays left-handed starters? Chacin is now 6 and 0 versus the Sox and they could never hit Ted Lilly. On paper this matchup was the best of the series for the Sox. Now they have to beat Halladay to have any chance of winning the series.

Its definatley frustrating watching them plate 14 runs in a blow out and then lose a game 3-0, I just hope the pitching remains consistent because the runs seem to come in bunches but IMO it will even itself out.

Papelbon had some sick stuff tonight. So far it's looking like it was a good idea to move him to the pen since our starting pitching has been so good.

How about some love for Tim Wakefield? Third straight strong start in a row tonight.

I'll give some love to Wakefield too. That strikeout with the bases loaded was clutch.

Wakefield is truly an amazing knuckleballer. There aren't many knuckleball pitchers that could hang around the majors any more. I hate watching him pitch against the Yankees.

They will definately need to keep Papelbon's use to a minimum this season. I like Papelbon...I would have loved to seen what he could have done as a starter if it werent for his shoulder. Well...what he could have done against everyone BUT the Yanks image

Willie Mo can hit for some awesome power...but you have to accept how much he strikes out.

Wakefield is solid no doubt but unfortunately we rarely get him good run support. As far as Papelbon goes he has the makings of a great closer but myself along with Red Sox nation hopes his shoulder woes wont come into play, the kid is too young to be held back but it seems we need to not overuse him like last year. Willy Mo might need to be put into action much more this year if Crisp continues to struggle.

Good win today. Manny finally hit one out, Timlin got himself out of a jam with a nice double play, and Papelbon recovered to throw some sick pitches after walking the leadoff hitter once again. Not bad for a team with 4 starting players hitting below .200 when the game started!

Papelbon 26 pitches in the save, but got the job done once again!

Great win today with many many contributors. Cora, Manny, Crisp, Drew, Papi, Taverez, Romero, Pineiro, Timlin and Papelbon were all big time contributors. Although it was only a sac fly it was nice to see Crisp drive the ball in the 9th to produce an insurance run.

Papelbon is throwing serious heat when he comes in, and it seems like him and Varitek have a good feel for what to throw to keep hitters off balance. How about the surprising strong start from Tavarez also? And, finally Manny goes yard. I have a feeling you'll see a few more of those this weekend, he always hits extremely well against Yankee pitching.

Dying to make up for last years Yankees sweep? hehehe
The way those three guys are pitching, it will be tough for the Yanks. But they even have to step it up a notch because Yanks dont have just any lineup! We'll see what the weekend brings!

This is going to be a very exciting series for several reasons.

    1. The Red Sox have Schilling, Beckett, and D-Mat all pitching very well and then Papelbon looming.

    2. Even without Matsui the Yankees can put up a crooked number faster then anybody ..... even the Mets at this point.

    3. The Yanks have Petitte and then two unproven young pitchers going up against Beckett and D-Mat.

    4. The Yankees bullpen is as solid as any in the game top too bottom.

    So, bring it on image

Looks to be a good and entertaining series.

gotta be careful not to overuse Papelbon....
Hopefully the Sox starters can go deep and the Sox hitter can tee off on the rookie pitchers. Let's see how they handle Pettite tonight.

I think the key for the Red Sox will be for their starters to go deep into the game. If they dont, its all Yankees.

well, Torre went for broke trying to get the first game and then take his chances with the kid pitchers. If the Sox prevail this series is set up for them. Nice comeback

    Rip,

    Re-read Dan's post--he's saying the opposite, actually.

That one has gotta hurt the Yankees - Rivera blows the save in an ugly fashion against the bottom of the Sox order - and they have two rookie pitchers going the next few days. Why bring Rivera in at all in the 8th? I thought the Yankees had a great bullpen?

And one comment, Michael Kay is absolutely the biggest homer in sports. I had to watch this game tonight on the Yankee channel, and all Kay did was pick apart every Sox player. My favorite moment? He started ripping Varitek, said he was done and on the downside of his career - just as Varitek hits the 2-run homer (and goes 3-4 in the game). He had negative comments about Lugo, Crisp, Schilling, you name it. It was nice to see him eat his words tonight.

Lost in this will be A-Rod's big game...too bad. He's hitting as well as anyone in baseball has in a long time.

yep, that was a BAD loss ..... worse then Scutaro. Nothing to say here ..... Sox are set up the rest of the series. If we get one win I will be EXTREMELY happy image

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Jer, Kay is a homer ...... what does that have to do with anything though? I don't care if he dresses up in pinstripe garb and has pom poms in his hands. Whistles, streamers, etc ..... so what? image It means nothing .....

great win Sox! Onward to tomorrow!

Dan - I know, it just drove me crazy tonight and I had to vent. Flaherty was actually good calling the game, but Kay drove me nuts.

Still, he can call every game like that as long as the results are the same!

Lost in everything will be the fact that Torre pinch ran for Giambi in the 8th leaving him unavailable to hit in the 9th. Unless he was hurt those type of decisions are really really dumb.

AWESOME game! And we got the 5 runs in the 8th courtesy of Varitek, Lowell, Coco and Cora coming through - that HAS to hurt!

I will admit that I felt ready to throw up at any point in the 9th without Papelbon in there, but great work by Okajima! Now we're stacked for a sweep!

    And A-Rod is on steroids.
