Yea...I think I saw the CEO of Schwab buying '72 Topps common PSA 10's for $5K+...and then he liquidated his set?? Must of had sour grapes because he couldn't unseat the #1 set because I see he's still actively buying in other areas. How can I get a Don Gullet when I have to compete with THAT?! Yikes :#

    Is that 131313?

Yes...he's changed his user name a couple times...I think it used to be Bulldog or something like that. Anyway, Walt is a heavy hitter that is waaaaayyyyyy out of my league!

I think his ebay user is currently 13djiwu13...again, it changes on occasion. Just know that if he's bidding on something you're looking at, don't waste your time.

yes that's right about the hedge fund guy. said he was selling because he had "too many sets to keep track of". It is crazy that some of the lower pop 72 PSA 10's went as high as they did. Just takes two buyers with deep pockets going after the same card.
Good luck finding those remaining cards.

Look what just popped up on eBay….

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/374556117937

So given Probstein's reverse auction techniques, he'll drop the price each time the card gets relisted....so with that in mind, I ought to be ready to pounce in 2025 :/

"Too many sets to keep track of" and yet he's still buying like crazy. I'm still thinking "sour grapes" so I'll pick up my toys :o

131313 is certainly quite well off. But I actually know another collector whose family’s net worth is a couple of orders of magnitude higher than his. Everything’s relative! Sick to think there is someone out there for whom $100K is like a dollar is to me 🙄

Same here. He's waaaaaayyyyyy out of my league. One of reasons that I decided to move on from my set. And the fact that my kids wanted nothing to do with it so I figured I'd get out when I did.

OK, so did anybody see the Heritage 7/15/23 auction results on the 1972 PSA 10 Gullett? $5,520!!! I do realize he was part of the "Big Red Machine" but come on...this is a Pop 7 "Common" in my book. I thought the Schwab guy was OUT of the '72 Set? Looks like there's another "more money than sense" '72 guy out there. What's next....$18,600 for a Pop 8 Al Oliver card....oh wait...that happened too??!!!

    You’re saying a 1972 Al Oliver 10 sold for $18K?!

  • PaulMaulPaulMaul Posts: 4,912 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don’t think I can view Heritage Results without a login. Did a PSA 10 of this card sell?

Who in their right mind pays $12,388.80 for a '72 Topps card of Steve Blass???

    https://milehighcardco.com/1972_Topps__229_World_Series_Game_7_PSA_10_GEM_MIN-LOT96437.aspx

I realize he pitched two complete games in the '71 Series and only gave up two runs, but SERIOUSLY?

Glad to see the '72 Topps market has simmered down!

  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,162 ✭✭✭✭✭

It's a pop 2 but that is crazy. Incidentally, that is the only WS card I don't have in 9 or 10. It's not that tough in 9 but all the ones I submitted got 8s. The last 10 of this card sold for $2k in 2018. You can pick up a 9 for a hundred bucks.

  • JRR300JRR300 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭✭

In that Heritage auction, there was a Pirates collector that was paying crazy money for 10's. I also think he paid over $10K for the Pirates team card earlier.

  • So who is the lucky millionaire that just scored the Aaron In Action 10....FINALLY.

Can't wait to see THAT card go in auction!!!

  • JRR300JRR300 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭✭

WOW!!!!! afetr all this time, a 10 finally is found.

  • A YouTube creator unboxed a 1972 Topps BBCE Box and plans to release a video soon regarding the grades of the cards he pulled from it.

  • PaulMaulPaulMaul Posts: 4,912 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here it is! Looks pretty deserving too. Back centering iffy but I wouldn’t complain.

  • Well, the Schwab CEO guy is at it again...he may have liquidated his '72 Set (User 131313), but he's still trying to get the number one '72 Orioles Team Set. More ridiculous bidding....here's over $5,000 for a Chico Salmon card....

Funny thing is he still didn't move into first place.....

Ohhhh, to have more money than sense ;)

Well, money buys you sense. If you have $100M (not saying Schwab guy has that), then what's the difference if you spend $5,000 on a common card that could be had for 90% less if you're willing to wait to get it?

He seems to get these urges and has to be #1 immediately, no matter the cost. Sorry that I don't have any PSA 10 Orioles.

Wonder if either one of them needs this…

To be fair though Chico is one of the tougher 10s at pop 3.

I know, but $5K!!!!!!! Mu7st be nice to have that much $$$ not to care about the price.

  • I haven't added a PSA 10 to my '72 set in what seems like FOR-EV-ER!

"Where have all the good times gone"?!

  • JRR300JRR300 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭✭

got very expensive!!!!! I have 3 dupe PSA 10 holdovers from my set that I sold several years back. Holding on in the event of a buying spree where prices go crazy.

  • nope

  • Hey PaulMaul & 86DonrussGuy. I've really enjoyed reading your speculation. Please keep the banter up! It's fun to read!

I don't make buy or sell decisions based on my Set Registry ranking, or "sour grapes" (LOL). I typically make them based on how the market is at any point for a given set or sport. In fairness, a couple years I also sold a slew of sets because my collection was becoming unwieldy from a size standpoint, as someone accurately posted.

    For example, I've sold most of my baseball sets (1959, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1983, 1984) except for my four favorites (1967, 1969, 1970 and 1971). Most were #1 All Time but a couple weren't - no matter.

    I also sold most of my football sets (1958, 1959, 1960, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 - except for my favorites there also (1963, 1970 and 1971). Again, most were #1 All Time, but a couple weren't.

And I did the same in basketball except for my favorite set – 1971-72.

Sure if I want a card badly enough I periodically overbid, but I get outbid countless times on cards and simply walk away. There is way bigger money than I will ever have in the collecting hobby/business. Most importantly, collecting is a reminder of simpler times of my youth, and I think it is that way for most of us collectors.

Let's keep having fun, and if I can ever help you with your collections, send me a note as I have a lot of duplicates and high-grade cards I'm always happy to share with other collectors.

    "my four favorites (1967, 1969, 1970 and 1971). "

The '67 set is my favorite '60's set. I broke mine up back in 2002 when I sold my Seaver PSA 10 to buy our land. I had a majority of the set in PSA10. YIKES...what that Seaver would go for now. Oh well...it was pretty fun selling a baseball card and using the proceeds to buy real estate :D .

The late '60's and early 70's were my "golden years" for accumulating cards with all my lawn mowing money.....I literally had banker boxes FULL of cards from that ERA when I moved to California for college. I had an inordinate amount of '67's and '72's and ended up making about 8 sets of each year. I kept the best of each year and traded off all the rest. Tons of card shows in the mid-80's when I SHOULD have been focusing on getting my degree :s .

Then PSA came along in about 1991 and the entire market changed. EBay happened and the graded card market exploded. I actually sold the Seaver on EBay....lots of fun!

Enough with the nostalgia...but let me know if you happen across any '72 PSA 10's...I haven't let that set go yet B) .

  • JRR300JRR300 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭✭

i still have 3 PSA 10's left over from my 72 set that I kept when I sold it. They are all pop 7 or 8 so not so easy to find. One semi-high number.
    144 Marty Pattin
    149 Gary Neibauer
    551 Ollie Brown

Not actively looking to sell, but will do so if the right deal can be struck.

I also have a handful of PSA 9's as well, with a few high numbers.

  • Most of the '72 Topps 10's I need are in another orbit (low pops of 3 or less). My hot buttons right now are finishing out the 200's (203, 222, 229, 292, & 296....and of course 263 if there ever is one).

As I whined before (from the "Diver Down" album)....
"Where have all the good times gone?"

  • JRR300JRR300 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭✭

good luck finding those. didn't come across one of those in the 20 years it took to build my set.

  • 20 years....I've been working on my set for 53 years and still don't have 'em :'(

I'll hopefully be able to pass the pursuit/"sickness" on to my grand kids one day.

  • I still have some 9’s from when I sold my set as well as the following extra PSA 10’s 26, 225, 235, 250, 418, 550 (Brooks). Email me through the Set Registry if any interest.

  • OK, so I had a registry member give me a hard time for using a movie clip (see above "Need it, got it.." from Big) where they are opening 1987 Topps. He said that had NOTHING to do with 1972 Topps.

Not to be shamed, here's a clip from Blacklist where agent Ressler is looking through a box of his old things (I think season 7, episode 17 as we JUST watched it).

So sit on THAT one and spin B)

And YES, I PROMISE I don't still live in my mom's basement!!!!!

You have an awesome '67 set, congrats. I'm currently ranked 6th. I just picked up the tough Roggenburk in PSA 9. You wouldn't happen to have an extra Marichal checklist in PSA 9 or know who might have one? Either variant is fine for me. It's the last card aside from the Seaver I need to upgrade to 9. The Seaver is easy but just waiting for a really nice one and to get the urge to spend that much for a card that used to be under $5k.

  • Sorry, I only have one of each of the two variants of the Marichal checklists in PSA 9. Wish I could have helped here.
