Been looking at the last several pages of this and really interesting to see how the dynamics of this set have changed since I put mine together so long ago. I've long since sold it off, but still have fond memories of building my set with the help of the other original old-timers.

the HOFers have become increasingly more and more difficult to find to nice condition, nice graded cards(8's or better) continue to rise, especially the 9's and 10's. The semi high and high # series are very pricey as well. I'm a fairly recent collector to this set, started in around 05 with a raw set.
@JRR300 That's about the time I sold off my set. It's still probably on the all-time finest, but surely way down on the list by now. I've been selling off a bunch of stuff and when I was looking through my raw stuff I found ~125 1972s that are just total blazers, but centering would keep most of them as 8s. And from what I'm hearing, even before the backlog they were grading vintage stuff with the expectations of super-modern. So 8s and 9s have been even tougher to come by - and now the wait is a year or more. I wonder how folks like 4SC and such are keeping inventory.
they have almost no inventory for vintage cards in high grades. That's keeping prices where they are now. And with the backlog, I'm doubting that many people will be sending commons to be graded at the new fee schedule.
Last week, PROBSTEIN listed 8 different Vida Blue PSA 10 cards (#169). Apparently, they were from a vending box submission that was just returned. Increased the # of 10's for the card from 13 to 21.

Within the past few weeks, there are three high grade 72 topps sets for sale. various auctions, but being sold as almost complete/complete sets. Just wondering if there are that many collectors/investors/whatever out there to put out close if not more than $100k to purchase. One of the sets on Heritage was the prior #2 set on the Registry and has to be worth $350k, give or take a few bucks with all PSA 10 on the main cards in the set. Opinons?

could it also be that collectors are thinking that prices are as high as they're going to be and figure to get out now? If they've been holding for a while, they have to have a handsome profit in there.
350 seems a little high , but since commons are not going to be graded for awhile, sets graded will be at a premium . Future grading prices could kill having a complete graded set.
to be perfectly honest, I believe the $350K is a little low. I believe those HOF cards on the front page, Fisk, Ryan, Aaron, Clemente, Mays etc would bring over $200K alone in this market. And he has over 400 PSA 10's, with a lot of those in the high and semi high series.
that set is no longer listed on the Heritage auction. No explanation . Maybe sold privately ?????
BTW a RYAN PSA 10 just sold on SCP Auction for over $40K.
Last night on EBAY, two of the most scarce cards in PSA 9 ended their auctions. The first was the EXPOs team card (#582, I think) that wound up just under $1600 and the the #655 Jerry Grote went for over $3600. Both cards PSA 9. There's not many of these out there, but I wonder if those prices might entice some of those people who have had these cards tucked away to put them up for sale?
I hate to admit it, but I was the winner of the most recent Grote PSA 9. I was also the runner up on the other two that sold last year. I certainly don't like paying stupid prices for a common, but it's the last card I need for my set and I've been chasing it for 5+ years. Obviously I'm not the only one either; there were two others bidders with bids of $3500+. It will be interesting to see the card in person as it didn't appear to be the strongest 9 from the scan.

does your set consist of all 9's or better that you needed that card in a PSA 9. you can buy an 8 for about $50. Do you have your set listed on the registry?
@gemint said:
The past three Grote PSA 9's sold for $3,650, $3,334.81 and $3,383. It looks like that's the new market price for that card.
I'm sorry, but I can't see how that card is worth that kind of money long term. I know there were multiple bidders at the end, all with very high bids over $3k, but I just don't get it.
My set is all 9's now. I agree the value of this card won't hold in the long term, but my OCD to have uniform grades won out. Also, I would have bid differently it it wasn't my last card. Fortunately, I obtained the other 786 cards well before the recent price appreciation of cards. Hopefully that does hold for a while.
I initially thought that at first but had a change of heart when I saw that price. For now, I'll just stick with my 8. Good luck with your set. Is it on the registry?
Coming back after a few years - kind of wish I'd held onto my set (bens4778 - I think it was 4th current finest at the time) instead of selling in 2018!
I was totally wrong about low pop cards in this set. I figured pops would rise (and they have) and thus prices would fall. Nope. Expos Team was maybe $400 when I was building the set (2008-2018), and the last one went for $1536. Plus the Grote comments above.
The trip we took to Hawaii with the cash was definitely worth it, and the S&P has risen quite a bit as well, but man...

I just did some 1972 low pop number crunching. Here is a list of the lowest pop cards in the set arranged by total 9/10 combined population. The list contains all cards with a combined 9/10 pop of 25 or under.
40 Barton IA - 15 - 0 - 15
655 Grote - 13 - 2 - 15
188 Schaal IA - 15 - 1 - 16
582 Expos Team - 19 - 0 - 19
532 Kendall - 21 - 1 - 22
533 Houk - 21 - 1 - 22
438 Wills IA - 20 - 2 - 22
518 Garrett - 20 - 2 - 22
693 Gallagher - 20 - 2 - 22
377 Harmon - 23 - 0 - 23
409 Baker - 24 - 0 - 24
292 McRae IA - 23 - 1 - 24
524 Reds Rookies - 23 - 1 - 24
708 Foli IA - 23 - 1 - 24
31 Jones IA - 22 - 2 - 24
723 Santorini - 21 - 3 - 24
263 Alou - 25 - 0 - 25
658 Dunning - 24 - 1 - 25
737 Randle - 24 - 1 - 25
170 Blue IA - 23 - 2 - 25
683 Hovley - 22 - 3 - 25
It’s clear that the top 4 enjoy a status separating them from the others. Starting with number 5, the cards are grouped more closely together. I think those 4 will always have that status and the high dollar sales that go with it, where most of the others don’t usually break the $300-400 mark (anymore).
Also interesting to arrange it this way. I never viewed Frank Baker as the 11th toughest card in the set, but that’s how it shakes out. I happen to have just picked up an incredible example of this card.
Looks like the breakup of the previous #2 registry set has begun. Many extremely low pop PSA 10's (1,2 3 count) are listed on the upcoming Heritage auction. Also, a number of PSA 10 star cards as well....Pete Rose, Clemente, Stargell, Jackson etc. as well. Anxious to see how the prices hold up with that many available at one time.

That's what I call evolving the way you collect....this GEM MINT Reggie is actually tilted.... another Reggie sold at the end of Jan. for 50k on Heritage....
@JRR300 ... I am seriously considering doing that for sure.... I am on the hunt for a well centered PSA 9 and I may pull the trigger to jettison the PSA 10 when I get a replacement... .... heck, I may do it sooner than later.
You should do it now when you know the prices are crazy high. With what you get from the proceeds, you'll be sure to find a 9 and have plenty of $$$$ for some other toys!!!!

Highest one prior was around $250. Now add 8 more to the count and raise the price by 60%. Must be the new math!

For all the talk about how tough PSA’s current grading standards are, it’s interesting how both of these 9s are newly graded, and from the same sub.
didn't realize that. someone did very well for themselves there!

That’s what they say, anyway….
That's what I call evolving the way you collect....this GEM MINT Reggie is actually tilted.... another Reggie sold at the end of Jan. for 50k on Heritage....
just think....pre covid, this was an $8-$10K card!!!!!!
@JRR300 ..High end vintage is being gobbled up by the competitive investor/collectors.
I've enjoyed these two for the last 10-12 years in my Reggie run.....
absolutely!!! These type items are becoming/have become already a new type of investment in portfolios.
Do you still have the 72? might be time to cash in!

it really boils down to which auction house.....
@JRR300 ...In jan. '22 Heritage auctions got 50,400 for the card .... PWCC just got 114k..... PWCC may be the place.
But did money and card REALLY change hands.? one vault room to another vault room?
sell it in a private sale. Every time I use a house it does not command what i expect.

110 percent ?
