Instead I attended a college hoops game for my Alma Mater and got together with some of my teammates from 47 to 50 years ago. Today the 2024-2025 edition won their game.
After the game us old guys went out for dinner.
In this group of 5 are a businessman, two lawyers, a doctor and a dentist. I think I am the only coin collector in the group.
Next Saturday I should have some newly graded coins back from our host.
Ok Easton and PursuitofLiberty. Get off the crack!
I promise I drank coffee this morning even though I'm showing a (GASP!) Tea Pot along with a relatively new purchase. It has a very interesting Provenance. Purchased from the David Davis collection by Dr. Charles Horning, sold with his set to MJ Sullivan and now it is MINE!
Tried to post yesterday but better late than never?
Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Happy “Red Eye” Saturday everyone! A week ago I was still roaming the bourse @ FUN. I picked up the coin below as my final buy of what for me was a great show. Certainly my best FUN ever!
I’ve always wanted one of these; call it a dream come true:
Most all collectors know the 1796 Draped Bust 25C is a one year type. Quarters weren’t minted again until 1804 (& with a different design). It’s a die state 1 with perfect dies. Also a B2 type; R3 rarity. It’s moderately worn (with very even wear). Denticles are complete & central devices are well defined. The coin has deep iridescent gunmetal hues in the recesses, with lighter shades of gray over the relief elements. There are no adjustment marks. With its “circulated cameo” appearance, this piece has exceptional eye appeal. So yes, buying this one is a dream come true!
What an awesome pick up! That is a coin that I hope to own someday and yours is perfect! It would match my 1806 beautifully…
This will be my contribution to this thread…
Crusty oldie this AM while sipping the Saturday Red Eye:
Nothing but superlatives for this one: undisturbed, nice for grade, Newman pedigree & great eye appeal. Love these Classic Head types!
Happy Super Bowl weekend to all!
Good Saturday morning everyone!
Having a morning with yesterdays arrival. I fell in love with this when I saw it, and was prepared to bid strong. I don’t have much toned gold so this one checks all of the boxes.
While I did focus on just a few coins in The Towers Collection, Part II that HA recently auctioned, I did lot viewing on over 100 coins since I was at FUN.
This meant I had notes on many coins, and as the auction slogged on (it was far too long a live session IMO), I bid on a few I had had good feelings about when viewing in hand.
This is one of them, which I also felt was undergraded by a point (easily could be a 55 IMO). Description of coin from auction added for those interested.
. 1828 O-121a (128.2), r.4+ ... PCGS AU53cac
Ruby-red and emerald-green accents catch the eye, while subtle iridescence fills the fields of this attractively toned O-121a example. The smooth, well-patinated surfaces are free of significant marks and the strike lacks sharpness only at points of wear such as Liberty's upper curls and immediately above the drapery.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”
Happy Saturday, folks. Here’s a wild little trime I picked up recently. I first saw this coin at a show last year but the dealer wanted Mars money and I passed - when I saw her this month for Moon money with another dealer, I was happy to oblige.

This was on Sheridan Downey’s FPL a month before the ANA last year. Was Lance’s coin.
NEWP from a great collection on this Red Eye Saturday:
From the J.Brand collection of $2 1/2 Indian gold. There are 10 pieces in this fabulous PCGS graded group ranging from MS63+ (for the very tough 1911-D “Strong D”) up to MS65+. All are CAC approved. I feel fortunate to acquire this coin to augment my type gold collection.
@Eldorado9 - love that 1818/5 quarter! Can you get us a closer look? I love those early Draped and Capped Bust quarters!
Happy Saturday! Enjoy a good cup of hot coffee.
Latest cup of Joe, latest newp, and to spice things up my latest read (perfect for a snowy weekend forecast). I posted this newp a few days ago but it’s not yet found its way into the SDB, so why not post it again? Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Thanks my friend. That Flyer is one of the S-3's as you saw, and the originality and color is really stunning. It is a dream coin for me. I'm mainly a Barber collector, but could not resist the charms of that eagle!
Good morning everyone -
I am drinking way too much coffee each day so this picture is perfect for me.
I love my coffee and this half dime as well. I owned it for several years. Enjoying viewing this thread each week and seeing so many wonderful coins and hearing some great stories -

Been awhile since I've visited this thread that was the beginning of a friend group thanks to @FlyingAl !
Hmmm.....what can I contribute for this week's share? I'm thinking an unusual common coin of low value:
This was an Instagram purchase I was happy to make. I'm building a colorful 1964 proof set (not my birth year).

I really look forward to Saturday mornings with my Italian Roast and a spot of Half and Half, seeing what we all have to share on this thread.
It's raining here, and looks like it'll be that way for a while, so maybe I'll work on some more photo's of the new girls soon.
Here's a new CBH (from the Towers Collection in January) with bit of a golden-russet-orange blush
