It's presently 13 degrees and snowing....Nice day for coins and books and music. The joys of life indeed.
I love interesting displays, so here is one from 1914. My Barber half in PF-67+ CAC, which was in Eugene Gardner's collection and a quite rare red seal $20.00 Federal Reserve Note. @pursuitofliberty is responsible for this new addiction, and I must say, these large size notes are just soooo cool. Help me, I'm falling!
Hello everyone... it's been a while since I've posted (new job) but today is exceptional. My brother sent me his coin collection and from the looks of the books and holders, they appear to be stuff he collected when we were kids... he's 10 years older than me and would have started his collection in the early 1960s. I just started unpacking but here's what I've run across so far...
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
I've never seen the wrappers for Silver Dollars... the paper military money was likely from when my father was stationed at (what was then) Frankfurt, West Germany. The rolls look to have been opened on one end... I'll go through each later. There is a "roll" of uncirculated Roosie dimes in a plastic tube... look to all be 1960.
I have no ideas about the Chinese shovel money... obviously looks corroded but I suppose I'd expect that from a 2500 year old shovel...
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
Here is my lone MB59 win. Was supposed to be delivered this morning (a surprise to me) but came shortly after noon. No more coffee but am enjoying a coffee stout
In hand it is everything I like in a CBH. Great luster and dirty.

Wow! I'm beginning to like Buffalo nickels much more after seeing @FlyingAl's nickels! Beautiful!
Here's a coin I forgot I bid on until Stacks Bowers sent me an email. It took me a minute to realize I actually won the auction. SB does not reveal the bidding after the auction is over, just the winning bid. I like the dark circulated cameo look so long as they don't show corrosion other than dark toning. This one is well struck, shows AU50 wear, and seems OK to me.
1876-S PCGS XF45 - Stacks Bowers photo
Trueview - reveals the surfaces with axial lighting reflecting off the fields back at the camera. The obverse looks nice, the reverse has some possible slight roughness around the eagle and what I believe are some planchet lines through the denomination.

Happy “Red Eye” Saturday everyone! A week ago I was still roaming the bourse @ FUN. I picked up the coin below as my final buy of what for me was a great show. Certainly my best FUN ever!
I’ve always wanted one of these; call it a dream come true:
Most all collectors know the 1796 Draped Bust 25C is a one year type. Quarters weren’t minted again until 1804 (& with a different design). It’s a die state 1 with perfect dies. Also a B2 type; R3 rarity. It’s moderately worn (with very even wear). Denticles are complete & central devices are well defined. The coin has deep iridescent gunmetal hues in the recesses, with lighter shades of gray over the relief elements. There are no adjustment marks. With its “circulated cameo” appearance, this piece has exceptional eye appeal. So yes, buying this one is a dream come true!
What an awesome pick up! That is a coin that I hope to own someday and yours is perfect! It would match my 1806 beautifully…
This will be my contribution to this thread…
I was very fortunate to be offered this coin from my Classic Head $5 mentors collection. It brings me to 4 of the 9 known 1834 DM's. As usual, the coin looks nicer in hand. The luster is outstanding with green-gold and orange colors throughout. She is a P55CAC (but once lived in an N58 holder). Enjoy the weekend everyone. The search continues......
.
Continuing my Early Walker quest on this “Red Eye” Saturday:
Note: tv not posted as it’s not a good depiction of this coin.
My opinion of this piece: it’s a little above average for the date (but that’s saying a lot). It meets, but doesn’t exceed my criteria for early Walkers in these areas: head, center obv, eagle’s breast feathers & mint mark. It’s a bit below average for the eagle’s trailing leg. But, it’s slightly above average for the skirt lines & sun detail. Along with these attributes is nice eye appeal.
This 1928-S was the next to last of this long hunt. 25 of 26! Fittingly, the final one is the tough, tough 1921-S. I have a feeling that one may take awhile.
Between the FUN Show and the Heritage Auctions it was another wallet sliming affair for me.
I'll probably have newps to show through April!
As if scouring the floor and participating in Sheridan Downey's auction wasn't bad enough, I have decided that Heritage lot viewing can absolutely be detrimental to my wallet!
And then, to make matters more interesting, I only looked at this coin during lot viewing because I couldn't figure out the on-line or TrueView images and I just needed to know what she really looked like. Of course then, after I viewed her in person, I decided if things didn't go crazy I'd try to win her.
Thankfully I think people slept on her (very poor images to what she looks like in hand IMO) and I walked away the winner at less than I might have bid otherwise.
What I see is much closer to this, although she changes dramatically when rotated in the light and the colors might be a little more vivid than my images. Probably a good coin to try and get a video of too.
Anyway, a Draped Bust Half, just to mix it up a little with my normal Capped Bust addiction ...

The 1799 Dollar is the BB-168 die variety and its known for its really cool die crack across the entire middle of the reverse. Based on my limited research, I am not aware of any BB-168 without this die crack. When I picked it up, I immediately thought it was so cool and got to have it. Mine has a lot going on for the Reverse Die, with the reverse crack on mine goes the other way, kindof. This was a win from Sheridan's MB59 at FUN, and probably paid a little much, but I really dig her.

Having a stormy Red Eye Saturday here in the SF Bay Area. Today’s coin is special as it’s the last of the 3 collectible 1854-S mint gold coin denominations that complete my set from the first year of operation of the original SF Mint. I previously bought a $1 in PCGS 63 & a $10 in PCGS AU55 CAC. This sweet $20 PCGS AU50 CAC is also my first buy from Doug Winter:
Per Doug, this piece is an original & not from a shipwreck (the S.S. Yankee Blade). These are tough to find in this condition (in fact, all 3 of the 1854-S coins were heavily used in commerce). None of the 3 are an easy buy - estimates are the $10 is most “available”, followed equally by the $1 & $20.
What about the $2.5 & $5? The former is prohibitively rare with about 12 examples accounted for out of a minuscule mintage of 246(!) coins. A NGC AU50 example sold in auction about 6 months ago for $408,000!!!!!!!
The $5, though, is impossible. I believe there are only 3(!) examples accounted for from the original mintage of merely 264 pieces. The highest graded is a AU58+. Unfortunately, one of the 3 examples (XF45) was stolen in a home invasion robbery over 50 years ago. Its whereabouts today are still unknown.
There’s no definitive answer as to why so few of the $2.5 & $5 issues were minted. Acid involved in the refining process was in short supply back then, but that’s only a partial answer as numbers for the $1, $10 & $20 were greater. Speculation is those denominations had more practical use in commerce.
Got my 75 mins on the Peloton done so now it's time to drink and look at newps.
