I was able to pick up the 1863 Judd-302 (Copper Nickel) and Judd-304 (Aluminum) recently. This complimented the 1863 Judd 301 (Bronze) I already had.
These are all Proof 1863 w/L Indian Cents. Not as famous as the 1864 w/L proofs, but definitely much scarcer. I doubt many collectors have been fortunate to own all three variants at the same time. The aluminum composition is one of just 3 known. Interestingly, these should not be considered true patterns as they were struck between 1869 and 1871. These should be considered Novodels.
J-301 Bronze - PF64BN (Photoseal)
J-302 Copper Nickel - PF64 (CAC & Photoseal) - The carbon flecks are way more noticeable in the pics than in hand.

To prevent the scanning of NFC chips in holders, which those particular ones do not contain. Maybe the seller does it out of habit on all slabs, or perhaps they feel that it disguises the silver from a metal detector.

M4 nailed it. Newer slabs have the nfc chip so the foil helps keep the coins disclosed from others during the delivery process. My friend that shipped them to me does it to be funny.
@M4Madness and @johnny010 ,
Thanks, now I know what happened to the Gold coin that I shipped to CA a couple of weeks back?
A newly slabbed, Gold shield NFC chipped slab shipped in a small FR box w/signature ship---DISAPPEARED!
The postman marked it as "left with individual", and the buyer, nor his neighbors signed for it-- never received it. Nobody signed for it.
I didn't insure it, and I'm about to be told to refund the buyer 2800 bucks. I'm seriously bumming right now..
Advice?..
Drug dealers use foil to conceal their goods from being 'sniffed'. Looks like I'm going to use foil to ship PM's from now on...

First off, how well do you know the buyer, and have you done previous business? Is this a forum member or someone you've known for a while? Was this a direct sale, or was it through an intermediary platform like eBay? You say you're "about to be told" to refund the buyer, but by whom? What type of area was the delivery location, how's the crime rate? You should probably make a new post and give as many details as possible, and I mean EVERY detail.
If this is a first time buyer or a rando who isn't known within any coin communities, pump the brakes on the refund. SOMEBODY signed for the package. If it wasn't one of the residents there, then it would have been the postal worker. The post office should be able to retrieve the signature, but you'll likely need the buyers participation to start making noise and get in touch with the postmaster. Does anyone have any ring camera footage?
Priority mail comes with $100 standard insurance, so a claim will need to be filed and I think the buyer must assist as well. That small amount of insurance will give the post office some motivation to start turning over stones. I would also post images of the coin in case it pops up somewhere, set a saved search on eBay for the coin. It's crucial for you to first figure out whether the package was actually dropped off somewhere. If it was physically dropped off, a police report might be necessary
In addition you should Contact Doug Davis at the NCIC, he deals with this for a living and will have more experienced advice than me - https://numismaticcrimes.org/about/
You may have learned a very expensive lesson, but it isn't that you should have used foil....it's that you shouldn't be shipping any high value, uninsured packages during the holiday season. There are a ton of threads here about stolen packages, shipping methods and insurance. Good luck, and remember like I said...EVERY DETAIL MATTERS.
@PeakRarities
"You may have learned a very expensive lesson"...
Agreed, and my bad. For years I've had no problems with minimal, and/or no insurance on items between $30 bucks and 5k...
Interestingly, I do insure all of my shipments to the TPG's and express at that. Mostly on 5-10k worth of coins on each submission.
I'm not feeling it with the PO after this, as well as stories of theft, to flat-out dumping of packages into a ravine!
When I receive packages from the TPG's, GC, and even a larger eBay purchase(3-6k) from a big boy, they all use Fedex w/adult sig. And that's where I'm leaning right now for shipping out high value items--Fedex.
I'm talking about an eBay sale here, as that's what I've been using as a selling platform for 15 years.
The city of delivery is Lynwood, CA, not sure of the crime rate there. The 1st time(to me)buyer is a frequent purchaser of PM's with good feedback. I told the buyer that I don't know who to trust, him or the Postman. I suspect the postman took it, or mis-delivered it? The buyer asked the postman about the package that 'delivered' that day, and the answer was "I don't remember", according to the buyer.
I'm in a jam with this one, again, my bad. I'll be opening that claim up tomorrow. I'm feeling really ripped off at the moment, although no refund has been given(or ordered)yet.
The missing coin is below,
Thanks for the advice and reply!

Ummmm....Lynwood is not a great area and it shares a border with Compton.
Crime is rather high and recently package theft in California (and everywhere else) a is at an all time high. The problem in cali is exacerbated by the lack of consequences and high threshold for being charged.
As far as Ebay is concerned, if the tracking shows as delivered they are not going to force a refund in this situation. If I were you I would not refund anything yet, but I would help the buyer with whatever they need to file a claim and obtain more information from USPS. They are able to pull the signature and gps location of delivery, and that is the first step the buyer needs too take here.
Im of the opinion that the seller of a coin is responsible until the buyer receives the item safely, but you cant rely on the word of an eBay buyer without any evidence. They could just be lying. Thery might have porch pirates. You don't know their living situation, maybe someone else in the home took it, and lied to the buyer. It's an ounce of gold, so anyone recognizes that its close to a $3000 at the very least and half of America is living paycheck to paycheck.
I appreciate that you're prepared too take responsibility, which is the right thing to do if the buyer truly never got their package, but its on them to substantiate that. If you tell the buyer you need to see post office correspondence and a police report, there a chance they might just suddenly "find" it after all. Be smart with this one.
As an aside, it might behoove you to unlock your profile so other members can message you. Someone might have pertinent info, but they have no way to contact you directly.

Thanks, makes sense, off to bed that goes.
What about the supposed foil blocking abilities when shipping slabbed coins with the nfc scan technology--foil really works to block?
If so, is there something out there(scan blocker)that has a cleaner application than plain kitchen foil?
Like a pouch/bag of sorts, like a brats dog in those foil pouches when you're at the ball game lol, but serious question?
An addition to my error collection, a decent overdate dime for my Mercury set and one of 4 similarly toned Sac dollars that I picked up for $2.50 each. Picture thru celophane doesn't do justice to the dollar.
Proud recipient of the coveted "You Suck Award" (9/3/10).
