    I dont think they (USM) will be inundated with returns on this one. Pretty wide distribution in terms of qty; secondary market is higher even for opened coins; sealed are going for much higher than issue; no more available from the USM (except for early day sales :) in any

    Indeed very nice and better then the Morgans the Mint is producing. Can the mailed box be opened & resealed without detection. I know a few years ago I received the Proof ASE and I could open and reseal and you wouldn't know the difference.

    Just received email notice at 9AM today that the order for one medal my son did in the morning the first day on the 15th, and actually "confirmed" at 10:48AM with an email, and his credit card actually charged!!!, after the original order email was received at 10:40AM, was just now cancelled, because "the items are no longer in our inventory and are not available for backorder".

    Has anyone ever heard of this? These are direct quotes from the US Mint emails. His order page just says "cancelled", no tracking, no shipping, but card charged.

    Called the Mint and all they said to him was that he will get a cc refund in several days. It appears they may have sold more than they had, even on the first day. This does not make sense, as we know there were some sold the 16th when the HHL was lifted.

    We are confused. not a household limit reason for cancelling, but an out-of-stock reason.

    Didn’t this mint selling return subject come up before and mint said they don’t sell returns.

    Agreed...too bad one poster here posted several dozen times about how this would flop and so many returns...kept me from ordering the added coins on day 2.

    In fact, just like we didn't know that 7500 had already been sent out weeks ago, graded, and received back by the submitters and offered for sale on eBay, until we actually saw the listings on eBay, we actually have no idea where the medals being offered for sale by Mint after 12:02 p.m. on Wednesday actually came from. We are just making assumptions based on past releases, and yet, there has never been a release like this one.

    And it honestly doesn't matter, because the odds of receiving a privy are tiny regardless, and no one is going to get hurt unless the bottom suddenly falls out of the market. Which is very likely to happen, once the initial excitement dies down and everyone realizes there is no longer any chance of scoring a privy from the Mint.

    But, it might not, if people actually do get past the fact that these are medals, not coins, and learn to love 75K ounces of silver at a premium to $104 each. Unfortunately, people sitting on their hands waiting to see what happens are going to find their return window closed. Stay tuned.

    No. And if you want a pre-paid return shipping label it takes the mint 1 or 2 days to send that to you. It'll be a week before they have any returns ready to ship back out at the earliest.

    Same thing happened to a friend of mine. Ordered early on the first day and received both Mint emails including the order confirmation email. 2 days later (10/17) he got the dreaded cancellation order from the Mint. It doesn't make any sense.

    I realize it's a long thread and you might not have read it all, but that's the genesis of most of the discussion here, particularly in the beginning. There's heavy speculation that most people will simply do that. Now that there does appear to be a market for non-privy medals it's probably not an issue although I'm sure that will still happen. I'll still return any that are not damage free and 70-eligible.

    This ^^^. Definitely this ^^^. But the game is not over quite yet. People are still fishing for privys.

    Wait and see what happens once people have them in hand, and they don't have privys. If there is organic demand for 75K at whatever price dealers try to get, then I was wrong, and there won't be a ton of returns. But it's too soon to tell, since most have still not been received.

    It's also possible that there won't be returns because the secondary market doesn't crash until after the return window closes. Then people who didn't chase medals they apparently didn't really want won't be so sorry after all.

    Finally, yeah, if you can't form your own opinion, there is no reason to complain when you listen to someone else with conviction and they turn out to be wrong.

    This is so far beyond weird that it is total nonsense. Out of stock was absolutely not a reason on 10/15, given that they were constantly available for sale until 12:02 p.m. on 10/16, and then appeared again momentarily on 10/17 and 10/18.

    Not sure what's really going on, or whether something caused them to link your son to you. But things like this are precisely why inventory has been materializing the past few days. In your case, it's total BS. Not sure how to escalate, or to who, but it's worth pursuing if you really want one, without a privy.

    The mint takes more orders than they have in inventory because some orders get denied due to credit card. It used used to be up to 10%. I had orders cancelled in the past. The only returns the mint could have now would be from dealers, and I doubt they are doing any.

    No. Those bad credit card orders are the items that pop up at 7:30 a.m. each morning. They don't over sell, like an airline, and then just cancel orders that there was nothing wrong with while simultaneously making items that were "denied due to credit card" available to the public each morning.

    And, if they did over sell, which they absolutely do not, certainly not intentionally, those orders would be filled with suddenly available inventory in the next few days, rather than be cancelled while the new inventory was made available to newcomers.

  • We banded owls tonight, and I was telling my two colleagues about the medal and how the Mint only let you buy one, and there were special ones, and even more special ones with hand signed COAs, blah blah blah. They're not remotely interested in numismatics but we all had a good chuckle at how goofy that reverse eagle is. I can't wait to get mine tomorrow! And congrats, @Samets, on getting a privy! Will you keep it or flip it?

    Not true. The Mint has made an excess to compensate for damaged coins/medals. I have never known them to sell more than the limit except one time, by mistake, when they sold the excess mintage.

    This is so far beyond weird that it is total nonsense. Out of stock was absolutely not a reason on 10/15, given that they were constantly available for sale until 12:02 p.m. on 10/16, and then appeared again momentarily on 10/17 and 10/18.

    Not sure what's really going on, or whether something caused them to link your son to you. But things like this are precisely why inventory has been materializing the past few days. In your case, it's total BS. Not sure how to escalate, or to who, but it's worth pursuing if you really want one, without a privy.

    What is strange is that oilers99 above said this also happened to a friend of his. It seems like a very unusual glitch, and I think they may have oversold a few in error (maybe even when they removed the HHL the next morning) and it took them 3 days to figure it out to cancel his order. My son has the same last name of course, but he has a post office box, so it couldn't have linked to me, as I have a standard home address.

    He was on the phone to point out there was available stock when his was confirmed, and they insisted they do not have any more now and he will get a cc refund in 3-5 days.

    I understand. But it's still BS, because a few become available every morning, and they know this, since they are the ones making them available.

    So why cancel your son's legitimate order while selling another one to @JimTyler every morning? Makes no sense, so I think something else might be going on.

    It means you pop up at 7:33 a.m. each day announcing "Got one more." If @Goldminer's son's order, that was placed and accepted on 10/15, was really cancelled due to a lack of stock, stock would not be made available for you to grab on 10/17, 10/18, etc. It would instead be allocated to people who successfully placed orders earlier that could not be filled due to a lack of stock.
