Found a double struck bust half

Just got this one in the mail today, and thought I’d share it here. I was pretty excited to find it and add it to my collection! I really like how you can see the eye from the original strike just below the mouth, and some of the letters from “e pluribus unum” in “states of”. Let me know what you think!

I think your imagination is getting the best of you. If it was double struck, how would letters from the reverse get on the obverse. Also the complete coin would be showing, not just part of it.

I don’t follow…. The first strike is off centered, and both the letters I referred to are in the reverse…

So, it's not attributed as double struck? Great catch. I found one raw many years ago on Ebay, that I eventually sold to a Bust Half collector.

Yeah, it’s in a PCGS vf30 slab…bought it from a big dealer too, seems like someone would have seen it😳

If someone submitted that coin for grading but did not pay for the error service, would Pcgs attribute it as an error or not. I would assume the graders would have seen the error when it was graded.

I often wondered that, I can see them merely focusing on the fabric of the coin and not stopping to take in the nuance of a common(er) date VF CBH. Best part is it an almost perfect VF even if a few layers have been stripped by acetone sometime in the past. Really wholesome look

Yeah, having run a grading room I would bet that the first grader just glanced at it, dismissed it in his head as just another common coin in nothing special grade, and graded it without looking at it.

That is how the very early ANACS (in Washington, D.C.) missed the 1959 wheat back cent that slipped through without being studied properly. I spoke with the Authenticator who did this while I was still at Coin World. He admitted that it just looked like another common coin, which they did get from time to time, and the date discrepancy never occurred to him.

    .
As best I know and can establish, the coin would not be attributed as an error if the error service was not selected. The pcgs form has a selection for errors and are given an error coin number (example E1234). I will note the the pcgs submission form does not seem to call out the error submission in the description text part of the form.

I do believe the graders would recognize the error and not consider it as damage under normal non-error grading but that is strictly an opinion and not known for fact by me.

Under the set registry it has some information on error usage. And I found the notice when pcgs was to start doing errors. The variety attribution is only similar as there are some varieties that pcgs will attribute without the variety service. These are established varieties and all other varieties would not be attributed unless the variety attribution was selected and paid for.

In honor of your ability to spot an obvious error from a picture that a dealer and a TPG could not spot in hand, the Tribunal has awarded you a Silver "You Suck" Award! Congratulations!

Fantastic find Ken! I especially love your example because the double strike can be attributed on both the obverse and reverse. Many double struck halves with dentil tracks only show on one side from a severe misaligned die (side thought: I see dentil tracks on the obverse most of the time, perhaps that means the hammer die side usually has the dentil tracks of an off center double struck half). Not only that, but many details of the first strike are fortunately visible.

Regarding PCGS's supposed mistake, there is no way they missed the dentil tracks altogether. If they had deemed it as damage, then it would have detailed the coin like the example pictured below. Since the OP coin received a reasonable straight grade, the submitter must have not recognized the mistake and not paid for error attribution, convincing PCGS to not add the error on the label.

Might as well add the overlay to the thread for future reference if needed.

Curious about the lines radiating up from the right leg. Is that also from the shield?

From the overlay, the shield lines did not reach down to the eagle's legs. I do not see the extra lines you mentioned, but perhaps that is just with the design.
