Not many ticket subbers here, but just a heads up that my 2 ticket sub that hit grading June 2021 moved to assembly today. The finish line is near.

In case anyone out there is awaiting tickets, my grades popped tonight and I’m very happy. I bought a lot of 5 Super Bowl tickets - 3 slabbed as 8s and a 9 with 2 raw. In hand the raw ones looked pretty damn good but I’m no ticket expert. Why wouldn’t they be graded unless there was something seriously wrong with them? Figured I’d need them slabbed for resale eventually anyway, so sent them in. Got an 8 on a 2002 gold (Brady’s first and SB MVP) and a 7 on a 2005 purple (his 3rd). I’m no Pats fan as you may guess from my avatar and nickname here, but I recognize the value his name brings. Got the grades I hoped even though I was expected much worse news - if they had initially been graded, the lot would have been way out of my price range. The risk paid off - definitely no complaints from me.

That's great to hear, as I just sent my first two ticket subs off last week. Thanks!

2.5 is pretty much my speed.

True, once the people who had no clue what they were doing stop submitting cards the gem rate will go up

Just an FYI... I sent in three signed baseballs (1 graded, 2 just authenticated), two of which were at the $15 quarterly special level. I mailed them on 4/19, received 4/21, entered 4/25, popped 4/27. That's EXCEPTIONALLY fast service, and even more surprising when two of them were at the $15 special level. All three passed, as they should've (Trout, Griffey, Balkovec).

2.5 is pretty much my speed.

  • Not new to card collecting but new to the grading game. Reading through this thread Im on the fence now if I should submit my high value nba cards 90s and some 80s to PSA at all. Sounds like the scale is all over the place w much less consistency then before and actually much harder grading then a couple years back. For $50 or $100 per card it seems like playing the lottery - which it should not be.

I've seen many more posting with positive results from the Economy submissions than with stuff coming out of the backlog. I've personally had 2 Economy submissions (a total of 10 cards) that were as I was expecting or better. I feel like this is safer if you have some higher value cards really worth submitting at $50 a pop. I don't know if PSA is giving these more attention or just has the more senior graders handling them. You also get them back in a very reasonable turnaround time.

My economy orders this year have been on point ... My first order from the baacklog has been in QA2 for an eternity ... I am hoping those are as expected as well.

First one hit just over a year old. Mostly cards for registry sets I have been building.
Mixed bag ... 1 upcharge and that is a first for me. Some unfortunate N6/N8s. I would have liked to see a few more 10s but overall pretty satisfied. A few misses, likely on my end, that dropped a couple of 4-6s.

If you've not submitted cards before, it is too expensive right now to submit. Instead you should at the very least post pictures to see if the more experienced submitters think that you can get the grades you'd need to make the cost worthwhile.

I heavily scrutinized all my picks for submission. Looked at them under light at all angles, corners/surface no visible flaws. Some older 80s early 90s NBA cards are off center some more then others, not sure how much they knock down for OC but rest of cards mint. I can honestly say what I want to send is all 9/10s (maybe 7-8 for OC older cards) if they are not Im really not sure what could be any higher grade!

Look at POP report for your cards in question, that should give you insight into how many 10s you can expect.

Buy some cheap 9s and 10s of cards from those sets to have them in hand to compare.

Post pictures here, for non biased opinions.

And finally, temper expectations of getting a lot of 10s from that era

We need to have beneficiary forms with the subs. I believe there is an actual chance of celebrating 3 birthdays before poppage. Feb 21, 22 and 2023. Oh my. Thank goodness they're doing the ebay authentication now to keep them busy. OMG.

Longest I had waited was 5 days but most were 1-2 days now I have an economy order that has been in QA2 for 6 days now. I went digging for an upcharge email thinking that must be why but I don't see anything.

Thanks. Larkins actually came from a vending box case that I still have not finished going through. Unfortunately also submitted Bo and McGwire but no gems there. Its funny the condition is pretty consistent for specific players from box to box. Dont think there is a single mint Bonds Canseco Mattingly Ripken after going through 15 or so boxes. But Larkin McGwire, Bo, Bobby Witt Mitch Williams 🤣, they usually look like they have a nice shot at mint or better. Bought the case from BBCE and for the price it was well worth it for the entertainment. Last I checked they still have one.

What are the odds that Montana, Marino and Elway got 9's while the other black refractors got 10s? Do those grades jive with what you are seeing?

  • BBBrkrrBBBrkrr Posts: 1,492 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm glad (:() to see I'm not the only one waiting on a Value submission from 2021. I entered 175 and all Topps from 1981.

They arrived on March 3rd, were entered on April 19th and are still in Grading. Maybe they'll be out by Memorial Day!?!

I've done better with Economy since they've reopened, but I noticed that each submission has taken 4 or 5 days longer than the previous submittals. The most recent took exactly 30 days. A couple months ago they were shipped after about 21 days.

  • UlyssesExtravaganzaUlyssesExtravaganza Posts: 766 ✭✭✭✭✭

Valid point on which refractors got the 9s. I do feel like the 9s of Elway and Marino and Montano look pretty solid. Its a tough one cause not clear how much space is supposed to be underneath the name. Think I have seen some variation there. Did just learn the Gus Frerotte was a POP 1. :D Feel confident it could stay that because if we dont get to $12 again not sure anyone will submit a Gus again. I cant complain and say the 10 was not given because it is a more valuable card. I had some 1984 Nestle Hand Cuts and the ones that are submitted are all pretty much centered to PSA 10 specifications with sharp corners and edges and free of major print defects. So there they gave me a 10 on a Strawberry and a 9 on Kent Tekulve and Jack Clark. So it balances out. It works out for me they felt that was a 10. But with a lot of those hard for me to see the difference between the 9 and the 10. Even sometimes an 8 and a 10.

Cool. Thanks. PC stuff for now so nice to know they look like nice examples in the current holders. The Lynn was in my Christmas stocking when I was maybe 12 or 13 so that one for certain stays with me as long as I'm around. Funny cause I think I like the Brett 6 better than one of the 7s.

Grades popped today. Assumed the worst based on stories others have shared recently...and got it. Managed to get an 8 on an Eric Dickerson rookie but every other pre-1987 card was a 7 or below. It's a damn miracle I got an 8 on my Jerry Rice rookie last spring. An expensive pile of coasters, paperweights and door stops.

20 card economy popped today after 7 days in QA2 (My longest stint in QA2 in over a year). 14/20 cards got 10's including a 1996 Bowmans Best Ray Lewis HOF RC I needed for my set. Bought it raw a month ago for $30 and predicted a 9 on the high side. Kind of nice being being into a card for $80 that would have cost me $700+. This sub a mixed bag of 'older' 1998-2021 stuff I grabbed from a local card shop. I did pretty well on it. Have another economy sub sitting in QA2 that arrived a week before this one. Only difference is the other one is all ultra modern (2020/21 stuff) and this one was mixed.

Thanks. Trying not to be too pessimistic. The Dickerson was fair, as was a Randall Cunningham rookie (8), an 86 Steve Young rookie (7…good centering but a softened corner and a few print circles) and a 74 second-year Mike Schmidt (5…hoped for a 6 or 6.5 but oh well). Nothing high dollar but cards from my youth I wanted slabbed.

Thought I had good 8 or better potential with the 86 Kosar/Reed/Payton/Montana/Marino/Smith and couldn’t get anything above a 7. It’s fair to say I have a love/hate relationship with 86 Topps football. Love the cards but hate the grading disappointment!

Is it clear how things are working now and what is coming next? I remember it being mentioned new $50 per card allocations could move as quick as 15 days. Then someone mentioned as long as 26 days. I remember seeing a lot of the get in on the allocation emails. Now I am not seeing that as much. And it appears that now its possible to put together a submission at $50 a card without an allocation. But there is a note that says 90 day turnaround. (Also saw that walk-through is a 10 day turnaround which amused me. Have to rename it unless its a 10 day walk. That would be tough for me) So I was reading this that they are now ready to receive as many $50 a card submissions as the world can throw at them. I suppose testing the waters on how this works. Assuming no tsunami at $50 a card. But maybe more than enough to keep everyone busy. For a while. With more coming in, as they say, wait times increase. Then I would assume the next step is to let this play out, continue to try to ramp up with new hires and getting the NJ facility set up, and when they get to the point where staff has free time and are chatting around the water cooler, tweak the price enough to increase submissions. But I would suppose again, only through allocations to control the inflow. Maybe $30. Or maybe $35. Or maybe $47.50. 😆 Thoughts?

I'll be majorly disappointed if we don't see, at the bare minimum later this year, some value level allocation events for $25/card

😆 Thoughts?

How do you put together a $50 submission without an allocation? They did just have another lottery yesterday, so I thought those were still needed.

I also think they need to get down to the $25 price point later this year. If they are to be finished the backlog by end of summer as they are expecting, then I think this would be reasonable.

Ramblings from my brain below- take with a grain of salt. Exhausted from traveling just got back from burying the old man

They've begun tackling the 500-750,000 card weeks time period. Even at 40k+ cards a day they are not getting done anytime soon. Right now they are almost done with ultra moderns- blasting through those the fastest since those are worth the most

Will be a year or more before the below "wishes of Nat " happens. They'd need to have NJ up and running properly, CA stabilized etc etc etc
They also need to figure out the WHY behind a bunch of other problems.
Like any business growth is painfully slow sometimes and extraordinarily busy others

@Jayman1982 = think that $25 RETAIL prediction through allocations is spot on for Ultra/Modern/TCG
I do see vintage still getting price breaks

From the man himself in numerous statements-- see below. I've spoken with him, done business with him- the man follows through on his words

Oh, God yeah,” Turner said. “I want us to get back to $10 to $20 a card, honestly. We’re a collector company, it’s in our name. Our goal is to not cater to only the high-end market. There’s set collectors that want to send in a bunch of commons from 1981 Topps — that’s totally fine. We want to get back there. I have thousands of cards that I personally have, sets, random sets that you probably don’t care about or know of, but the common card is $10. I’m not going to spend $50 or $100 to get it graded. We’re not meeting the needs of every collector at the moment.”
