Current Turnaround Time

AercusAercus Posts: 381 ✭✭✭✭

Anyone have any current benchmarks for turnaround time? My June 1st regular submission is still at grading 🤯

An economy submission submitted on the same day is already back in my hands.

Yikes. Just had an order received this week. Guess I might not even see it back this year.

I had a small modern value order that was posted received on 7/13 finally arrive back this week. 2.5 months or twice as long as the estimated turnaround time posted. And that was after an email inquiry where they put an expedite notice on it.

Business is business so I don't besmirch PCGS, but I am really despising the modern issues coming out of the mint right about this time... really, there is no art in choosing between MS69 and MS70 (and guaranteed humans are no good at it). Its about time they build a fully automated assembly line with high res imaging and pattern recognition software and give the graders back to the "real" coins! While they are at, install the systems right off the chutes from the coin presses and the labels can have a timestamp of just how "first release" they actually are! "Look, I have a set of ten consecutive milliseconds just ten minutes after they started minting!"

Back to the subject at hand, I have four invoices received on 8/19 all with Gold Shield:

Regular (with one variety attribution) stuck in grading, not being imaged.

World Regular, Quality Check (just hit today) and images still processing.

Regular - Special Issues, in Grading not being imaged.

Economy, in Grading not being imaged.

Speaking of imaging, I can only imagine how aggravating it is to take photos of the same new mint issues 1000's and 1000's of times. I wonder if they wise up and just use a stock photo, or a rotation of them, or if they are truly shooting each individual coin from these releases...

I submitted four coins for regular service, plus Trueviews and die marriage attribution for two coins (same date, one variety being rare, the other being the most similar die pairing to the rare one for comparison). The coins were submitted 7/9 at Summer Fun and marked "received" on 7/19. They remain "in grading" after 64 business days now (88 calendar days).

When should I be reasonably concerned enough to ask PCGS to check on my order's whereabouts?

I’m sure they shoot each one, as TrueView is a service for which submitters are paying extra. Most of the modern coins don’t get TVs anyway, given the additional cost to the submitter and that it isn’t a feature that collectors of those types of widgets value.

My modern value submission rvcd 8/4 was delivered today 10/15. It sat in grading for 2 months, went through encapsulation in a day, over the weekend to QA, then it shipped.

Was hoping for silver box, but I got a gold box and I'm ok with that.

My economy submission I received back a couple weeks ago took 2.5 calendar months. I think that's ~50 business days. It may have only been in process for about 45.

I've seen movements on some of my orders:

Regular with one variety attribution received 8/19 shipped 10/15 or 39 business days. Counting 10 for the variety attribution it was 4 days past the ETT. It went very rapidly through Encapsulation/QA/Shipping (the three took one business day) likely because I called to ask about the status since it hadn't even started imaging apparently as of the end of last week.

My Regular World received 8/19 shipped on 10/12 or 36 business days.

Regular Special Issues received 8/19 just hit QC yesterday.

Economy received 8/19 is still in grading and does not show it is being imaged yet. it is at 39 business days as of yesterday so it seems I may have another 2-3 weeks yet to go on that one.

It's now 72 business days and counting in "grading" for a regular 4 coin order with attribution for two coins submitted 7/9 at Summer FUN. The order was flagged as "received" on 7/19. I called a week ago and they said they would try to expedite the order.

So with their web page claiming that they have graded over 250,000 coins in the last 30 days, that would seem to indicate a backlog of around between 500,00-750,000 coins?

And yet they felt the need to advertise a walk thru special recently. As others have said, grade the damn coins you have.

Some people who submitted at the same time I did have gotten their coins back over a month ago, so I wouldn't assume uniformity in grading time for each submission to calculate how much of a backlog they have. It sure looks like there's a large backlog, though.

How do they store coins while waiting to be graded?

I had two separate submissions for ASE proofs that were from the same us mint box and received at pcgs on the same day. One order was graded within about 3 weeks and half graded 70 and no milk spots developed after grading. The other order took about a month and a half to get through grading. More than half of the second order developed milk spots and the grades reflected the spots.

Seems like proof coins sitting longer are developing milk spots at a much higher rate

I have not submitted coins to pcgs for many years. This year I rejoined the Collectors Club to submit some u.s. coins (7 Morgan’s and a barber dime). They were marked received on September 22, 2021. No change so far. How long should I expect to wait before grades are posted?

They were the 8 submissions received with membership. I would assume this is the regular tier.

If they were under regular, there should have been some movement by now if they were received 9/22. I would reach out to them and see.

Depends on tier level. I have actually been pleasantly surprised at how quickly my submittal has moved through the system. Sent in 5 coins, received 10/11, and as of yesterday are in quality check, the final stop before shipping. Not saying they won't languish there for awhile, but it has still gone quicker (so far) than many of the stories I am reading here. (These were submitted under the Regular tier.)

True. However, my four coins were submitted as Regular (Gold Shield) with TVs, and attribution for two coins.
