I think this thread will be really interesting as a lot of examples are shown and all the different colors and strike variations are shown in one thread. Same for the Charlotte thread.

I dreamed of owning this one for about 40 years. It's a Three Dollar Gold Piece plus is from the Dahlonega Mint.

I saw my very first Dahlonega gold coin (very first gold I saw actually) was when I was in the fifth grade in the spring of 1960, an 1853-D gold dollar. My mother's cleaning lady had it. It was a family heirloom, and she would never sell it to me, but I still remember it. I heard that see was offered $50 for it by one of the men in town. Back then, that was a fair offer. For her than would have been more than a week's wages.
That experience explains why this piece is among my favorites. It is graded AU-58 and looks better in person with 100% original surfaces.

My two. I have posted these before. Purchased them raw. Would love any comments on "Altered Surface" designation of the 1852-D. Had several very knowledgeable local dealers look at it and shrug their shoulders.

They are from a small town, have a Three Dollar Gold Piece in the series and made better coins for a number of years.

@BillJones.... Thanks Bill... I must admit, I have been leaning in that direction, for those reasons. Plus, I like the way the name 'Dahlonega' sounds...
