If I am not mistaken this three dollar piece is one of the rarer full strike 1854-D. The denticles on the coin are present all around the coin very much unlike a normal 54-D three.
This is one of two 1838-D $5 gold pieces that PCGS has graded MS-63.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I've only owned one Dahlonega coin in my life, an 1845 half eagle. While owning it I began researching the population, investigating the die pair which eventually lead to an article published in Coin World and an honorable mention regarding the coin by Doug Winter in Coin Facts...

Could the 1853-D Half Eagle be the most common Dahlonega coin? Given that some of the Dahlonega miners came home from California and brought their gold with them, this probably has some Cal gold in it.

New to the forum but I'll post a couple this weekend. maybe a 41-D $5 in F-15 and a 48-D $5 in G-04 to compare with the F-12 and AG-3 already posted.
It is already shown on this thread, but I happened to bring my Dahlonega out for the day, along with my Philly, from the same year:
The closest thing for me to ever doing the gold dollar set is to just do the 1857 set. I need Charlotte and San Francisco and I do plan to get them at some point in the future.

Even the Charlotte guy has a Dahlonega piece or two…

Pretty sure I've shown all of these in the past but worth looking at again. All 5 were purchased raw in the mid 1970s long before TPG existed.

I love pre-Civil War gold. Here is my $5 1842-D Small Date, ex-Harry Bass.
It would be interesting to see an analysis of how many gold coins (all denominations )were minted in Dahlonega, vs the estimated number of survivors.

That 38-D looks better than a 63. Grader's glasses must be scratched.
I like this look in old gold.
One more.
Two favorites
Those are some great images! I enjoyed viewing all of them.

I like the Mint mark on the obv. That being said it’s amazing how the mint squeezed the D on the rev of the $21/2 pieces

My one and only - it’s a beautiful coin though!

Beautiful coin!
I thought that looked like a Fairmont coin!
Congrats!👍
I’ve always thought that AU53 was an odd grade for that 1838-D. Looks better

Here are a couple of mine.
I agree with you, my 38-D is graded 45 with CAC. Looks like a 50 or better to me.
Cool thread! I owned a couple of Dahlonega 5's back in the day, a 46 and 53.
