XF-40?The 1817 O.105a always comes with a mushy obv strike and should be graded by the rev. Your example looks to be at least a 50, maybe higher, depending on how much actual luster remains.
Below are two more XF’s from Coin Facts. The top pic is a 45 and the bottom is a 40. Your 40 is clearly undergraded based on these pics.

I had a similar experience.
The 1976 Penn/Ohio coin show was in Cincinnati, my first big show! I had decided to buy a proof Buffalo for my type set. Being unsuccessful I decided to find a CBH. After looking at a few AU/Unc coins I asked my boss at the coin shop for his advice on which coin I found was best. He looked at my choices, mostly white coins in the 1830’s and then led me to a table that had an “AU” 1815. He talked me into purchasing that coin. It is really a choice XF. I used my entire budget for the show on that one coin. When I arrived home my dad asked what I had purchased. I showed him and mom my new half dollar. I was asked how much I paid, $750 was the response. I had just obtained my drivers license a couple months before and had just paid $750 for my first 🚙. Imagine the discussion that followed!
All ended well. I still have the coin. The car is long gone. I make my living buying and selling coins. As the song says, “life’s been good to me so far…”
