I got my catalogue for Sheridan Downey's next auction in the mail yesterday.
Lot 93....1827 O-144 R-5+ PCGS AU 58. No, I won't be bidding. At least on this one.
Better/newer images of this rarity, along with slab photos, are now on Sheridan's site.
Lance.
I got an early look at this bust half before the dealer offered it to the public. I was shocked by its color, luster and surfaces. Graded MS62 by PCGS.
"How long do you think this coin sat to acquire such amazing color?", I naively asked. He replied, "Not sure. Overnight?" LOL.
Lance.
I picked this Bust Halve up the other day off Ebay at what I thinks was a good price. Do you think it would be worth sending to PCSG to get it regraded showing as broken 3(the NGC holder only lists it as 1823)
Yes, probably worth having it certified as such if you want to sell it.
Thanks @pursuitofliberty I just wondered for later on. I got it for a little more than regular "23 money (someone else recognized it an bid it up about $100 more before they quit bidding) I've been concentrating on Bust Halves and quarters lately but never posted any of them. Nothing as nice as a lot of the coins posted but I like them.
This is the only forum that I could find for US Coins, is this were everyone goes?
As for the coin, I like it and think VF25 is about right. PCGS is always cautious with crosses (judging through plastic can be tricky and risky) so it might drop a grade which seems unfair but that's the nature of crossing. You might consider cracking it and submitting raw for a better shake.
You will not have to pay extra for it to be certified as a broken 3. I'm surprised NGC didn't do this but I'm not that familiar with how NGC handles attributing Redbook varieties.
Whether you should you leave it alone or get it in PCGS plastic is a personal matter. Yes, PCGS bust halves generally get better prices. But you have to balance that against the submission costs. Suppose it is a $350 coin. Would you pay $60+ for PCGS's service (which includes mailing both ways)?
Welcome to the forum! It's great to have more bust half enthusiasts.
Lance.
@Sarge8497 I agree with my friend Lance ... you found the right place, for sure. There are a LOT of very knowledgeable people here. Welcome to the forum!
And his take seems spot on. I also like it as a VF from what I can tell ... it would probably garner more money in PCGS plastic, and it will definitely get more eyeballs when that time does come labeled as a Broken 3. However, as mentioned, there is cost in all that.
Bust Halves and Quarters is a good mix ... (and Dimes, and Dollars and Half Dimes ) ... I'm sure we'd love to see some more of your finds. Feel free to reach out via PM as well if you ever need a hand with Busties.

Another bust half from my favorite year. This one is Ex. Hamilton and was once in a old fatty NGC 55 holder with a gold CAC sticker. It now resides in a PCGS 63 CAC holder
This 1820 $5G coin came out of a local Denver Estate 9-12 months ago. As you can see, it lived in a White Plastic Capital Holder for decades, saw the daylight for a few days, then moved to a new PCGS holder. And with a green bean sticker to boot!

I know I should share more but I don't know where to begin.
How about an R5 in AU58+?
Lance.
I love seeing them, but I hate following Lance, his 122 puts mine to shame--coins and pics alike--but here goes.
Better/newer images of this rarity, along with slab photos, are now on Sheridan's site.
Lance.
Here's another 58+. At one time it was a 55 gold CAC in an NGC fattie from the George Hamilton collection.
Lance.
Okay. Last one unless someone else keeps this thread alive.
This is an O.105 in PCGS 65+ CAC. I had no right to buy at this level. But I lost my head.

One of my “babies”.

These are kind of special...plated in Overton
A couple more with some beautiful toning to add to this incredible thread…

How about some reeded edge halves? They don't get as much respect. Maybe steam-powered presses was cheating.
A big page turner.

when I already had this 101.

Fun! The thread is still alive.
Here are some pretty MS examples.
Lance.
Cleaned and scratched, but...there's something missing on this 110.
double post
Yes, the hatch marks above the scroll…nice O.110 prime!!
R6 if I’m not mistaken.
Great find….congrats @OKbustchaser!
Dave
Dave means below the scroll, of course.
I agree, probably an R6. Only a couple dozen are known. Cool find!
Lance.
If you're looking at the coin in a properly oriented PCGS slab...
then the marks ARE above the scroll.
Love the 09-110 prime @OKbustchaser
Here's one to keep the thread going ...

Nice pick! @Sarge8497 Especially if you got that at regular '23 money.
Welcome to the board.
