I’m new to coin collecting and this forum but I wanted my first post to be a share and this is a coin I picked up a few days ago from NNC.

It’s my new favorite coin and the highlight of my collection. :)

    Nice!

Pre-1800 American “big silver” coins are hard to find these days at reasonable prices.

    Can I see yours?

I was thinking of sending mine in for a CAC sticker because it looks like it’s a better quality F-12 than a lot of others I’ve seen.

Nice coin, I love it! I had a 1799 but it didn't look as nice as yours so I sold it off.

WOW! A very, very nice piece for the grade. Congratulations on such a nice addition 🍾🎉

Just curious: Do you think I could get a CAC sticker?

I don’t really know as much about DBD grading since I’ve mostly been learning about Morgan Dollars.

From your pics I’d say yes, it’s a shoe in. I’ve seen 15’s not as nice as your 12.
    Again, congratulations 👌

Since you asked to see other early dollars, here's mine (VF30):

    Omg nice!!

Yours even has the word “Pluribus” fully legible!! O_O

I’ve seen AU coins with the “Pluribus” not clearly visible due to weak strikes so I’m impressed!

Sure, here’s a link to my registry page images. DLRC took the images. It’s in my safe deposit box so won’t have a pic of my own for now.

    Oh wow really??

Maybe it would make more sense to have it re-graded and go for the F-15?

This one is NGC so maybe crack it out and resubmit to PCGS?

Well I just spent a lot of money on this one so I can’t afford to buy anything right now. I have to save up for another few months to get my next coin.

But I’m thinking of getting a low grade Flowing Hair Dollar next.

I would say so much for the subtle , low key entrance. That’s a “ hey look at me” red carpet type entrance.

Nice coin, and from a dealer many here have bought from.

Well I mean if you’re implying I am trying to brag I promise that is not the case. It’s just that this is my first “big” purchase and as the new highlight of my collection I wanted to share it to sort of introduce myself while showing what kind of stuff I like.

If you’re not implying that at all:

Lol I had to wait until I went to Tahoe on vacation so that I could drive an hour from there to Carson City and buy this thing. They’re right across the street from the Carson City Mint building which is cool.

Oh and they have a HUGE selection of stuff ranging from $20 to $200,000+.

If you like CC coins they have the largest selection I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

I’ve checked their stuff out online (on recommendation of this forum) but never had the right money for the right coin at the same time. Probably just a matter of time.
I have to do my in person coin shopping on vacation and work trips, too.

Can't go wrong with a dollar from the 1700's.

Oh yeah I don’t really like their online site.

It only has a small fraction of the coins they have across all 3 shops. They have one in Reno too.

Also I should mention I got it for $80 cheaper since I paid in cash rather than credit card.

What I did was I sold them one of my 1oz American Gold Eagles and then used some of that cash to buy my coin and I kept the rest of the cash.

    Agreed.

1799 is just crazy old when you think about it.

I mean this coin was LONG out of circulation before the Morgan Dollar was even a twinkle in George T. Morgan’s eye!

The Morgan came out in 1878 which is almost 80 years after this one which I think is really cool.

I also like that it has an honest circulated look without any problems. It means it was actually in circulation and used by the people back in the early 1800s rather than just kept safe and sound in someone’s attic and passed down generation after generation.

This coin has inspired me to try to collect 1 example of every type of American dollar.

Not every date and mint though since that would cost an insane amount.

Just 1 example of each type. I still need a Seated Liberty Dollar & Flowing Hair Dollar.

Just out of curiosity: Do you think it would make sense to send it in for a re-grade to PCGS?

The price (according to PCGS price guide) jumps from $1,600 to $1800 by going from F-12 to F-15 which would cover the submission cost easily if I have a good shot at it.

Or maybe at least go for a CAC?

Any advice or input is appreciated.

    Thanks!

Try CAC first. Take things from there. Do you have a CAC membership?

I don’t currently have one but I was thinking of one day when I have enough coins worthy of submission maybe signing up and submitting all of them at once.

Anyone can get a membership if they pay though right?

As to your question, are you planning on selling it this year? Based on your excitement with it, I would think not.

If that's a keeper for you, I wouldn't do anything right away, and just enjoy it for what it is, where it is. I think that coin would almost sell itself if you ever needed to part with it.

Then, at some point, if the goal is a PCGS jacket (which is probably the best place for it to be if you can get it there), I would put it in for a cross it first. The CAC sticker doesn't go with it from NGC to PCGS, so I wouldn't do that first.

Then, later still, maybe send it in for the bean.

    My 2c ... you'll get a lot of different opinions I'm sure

That’s true. I have no plans of selling it even in the next 10 years. It’s my favorite coin in my collection so I’ll probably keep it forever unless I find another one better that I can afford.

Every year it gets older and older and by keeping it for myself I can guarantee that it’ll still be around for a couple generations.

Do you know if NGC holders are environmentally safe? Like have you ever heard of coins being damaged while still in the holder due to no fault of the owner?

@MKUltra24.... Welcome aboard. Great coin, congratulations on a super addition to your collection. Slabs are not hermetically sealed.... However, they do protect against normal handling and storage. Coins in slabs are more likely to degrade to to contact with substances prior to encapsulation (i.e. PVC, finger oils etc.). Cheers, RickO

    Welcome and congrats!

Regarding a CAC certification, my guess is no. Prominent scratch and old cleaning (like most big old silver excepting Morgan’s). It’s worth a try at some point.
