1806 DBH GTG - GRADE REVEALED in first post
Not my coin. I'm interested in how you guys would grade this coin.
Grade revealed. I like this coin. For some reason it speaks to me. I bet that scratch is not nearly as prominent in hand, and I don't necessarily think that color is 100% accurate. The seller has this priced somewhere between a 35 and a 40.

XF40, weakness in strike in the centers, but the drapery is intact at the shoulder as it should be on XF DBH's. T-17.

Looks like a 40 to me. nice color, hopefully the mark on the face is very light and only visible at certain light angles.

Nice coin. I think it squeaks by as a 40 but that cheek may hold down her enthusiasm a bit as

Also, conditions were rough back then, and these scratches may well have occurred in normal daily commerce.

Those scratches are excessive imo. I could see a thin toned over scratch get a pass but that coin should be in a details holder.

My 1883 with cents, of course it was a worn out coin too, but it got "Detail Holder" because of the scratch. It was old and already coated over. My old eyes didn't see it until they told me where to look.

What I expected...I think 6 times it comes back VF35, 2 times XF40, 1 time VF30, and 1 time details if you submitted it 10 times. Grading is simply not consistent and based on the graders on any given day. Nice to see that the forum got it correct to a large degree

I had looked at this post yesterday but forgot to comment as I was busy and company showed up. I think it's an attractive DBH.
I initially though 35, so I am glad to see I was on it. The more I looked I also could see it as a 40, but only sort of. I really didn't and don't see it as a 30.

There does seem to be inconsistency with all the coins in the VF range I've looked at. Many coins look over or undergraded to me. Parts of this coin definitely look XF.
The DBH series is difficult to grade consistently, there are infinite combinations of die stages, die pairings that are out of alignment and never strike well, and different striking pressure. There have been no less than 3 threads on grading for 1806 O.121/T-29 that appear to be undergraded, but there is a worn out obverse die paired with a new reverse die, making it difficult to grade.
I have quite a few VF graded DBH's with luster that one would expect on an XF45, they are all from worn dies that tend to get undergraded. Since I collect DBH's by die marriage and die state, I can't worry about grading inconsistency.
