A bit dark for my liking. I agree with VF 35, although I am bothered by the scratch. That second one that you posted, which straight graded with a CAC, is horribly damaged, IMHO.

While most facial scratches totally prevent a coin purchase for me, this one would not in anyway bother me. I have looked at it over and over and still would accept it if graded. I have seen many others, that I would not even considered, in holders. If I could afford it I would be PMing JoeLewis for the owner information for that is a beautiful coin.

I have the 3rd edition of Al Overton's Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794 to 1836 and Jules Reiver's Variety Identification Manual for U.S. Reeded Edge Half Dollars 1836 to 1839. Is this the best information available for Varieties of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Series?

For the 1794-1807 dates, the 2015 Steve Tompkins book "Early United States Half Dollars: Volume 1 1794-1807" has many improvements and new research, as compared with Overton. Tompkins is also working on the next volume for the early years of the CBH series 1807- ?

The 3rd edition is probably the most popular (the 5th is Overton's latest) perhaps because it corrected many earlier errors.
But errors exist for all editions. Errata is publicly available. Visit Dave Rutherford's site and click on "References / Dealers". Ignore the login prompt.
There are other references for determining die marriages. Glenn Peterson's "The Ultimate Guide to Attributing Bust Half Dollars" is one. For pre-turbans (1794 - 1807) nothing beats Steve Tompkins "Early United States Half Dollars". Steve's next volume on the first half of the Capped Bust series is probably 12 months away.
For the reeded edge series, the bible is Dick Graham's spiral bound "Reeded Edge Half Dollars". Tom Bush made significant, important contributions. I think this may be tough to find. I don't think printing exceeded early demand.
Lance.
Thanks, Lance. I've also have Edgar Souders Bust Half Fever 1807-1836. I've been looking for Dick Graham's spiral bound book(did not know that Tom Bush had input) and have not found one yet. I appreciate your assistance.

And then there are online sites. A forum member spent many months building a site which is really quite good, if a little busy. httmaibockaddict.com/capped-bust-half-dollars.shtml/p://
