I imagine the big kahuna won't be auctioned there, or will it?

  • dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,741 ✭✭✭✭✭

Both the 1794 and 1804 are pictured in the listing.

Hmmmmmmmm. Interesting time to sell the coin with the title for most expensive US coin. I will refrain from opining on that. I wish Bruce all the luck in the world. There is NO DOUBT that the coins are individually stellar and collectively incomparable.

At first blush that was my thought also.

If the economic "experts" are to be believed, we are ~9 years away from a full (pre covid) recovery.

Making this exit point look more attractive.

Predicting 9 years to recover financially from Y2K and 9/11? Uhhh, no.

    Better choose more reliable sources.

A market test for the previous nuke bid strategy. Will it pay off?

A STELLAR auction to be sure. From the few that Bruce has shared with us,
any one of the pieces would headline a major auction.

Oh you guys........ Did I quote sources? Let me reword:

"They" said economic recovery following 9/11 and Y2K would take much longer than it did. Perhaps, in an apparently much-too-literal way, I was suggesting that nobody knows the future and reading these particular tea leaves (timing the market) might be an inexact science.

    There. Happy?

Any chance we can simply leave politics out of this? There are hundreds of other sights to seek out the opinions of the politically astute.
How about we leave a coin forum to speaking about. . . COINS.

That will be an amazing auction, and certainly will attract the deepest pockets....rightfully so. Cheers, RickO

    Wow......I didn't see THAT coming!

I thought that he'd hold on to those for a LONG time.

IMHO, in a year or two Covid-19 will be just a blip on the radar screen.

I don't know of any family, friends or co-workers that have been affected......I guess that I am LUCKY.

MANY, of my friends and relatives have been buying (one bought a house!). He paid 33% more than what it sold for in the 2007 market.

Bruce always said that the 1794 $10M coin would not be sold at a loss......I guess that we'll see?

Bruce, I ABSOLUTELY wish you the BEST and I hope that you were correct.

I can't wait to watch this auction......Should be exciting!!

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Sorry, if I had the means to purchase those coins i’d Most certainly not ever part with them. They would be prying them from my cold dead hands, with pry bars
    But that is just me
    Good luck with the sale

Why? I probably would do the same if I was a partner.

    Yeah, I agree!

How would it look if you owned an auction company but used a competitor's auction house??

I just saw this today, so I do not know any information other than what everyone else know. I would not be surprised a collection like this that he will pass and not purchase any. Sets of coins in this category, he prefers to buy the set intact, privately.

Interesting question. If you have followed along in the Watching Hansen thread you may have noticed that he has been fairly shy with coins over $1Mil, along with a couple of other rare coins like the 1958 1c DDO which he did not get. There could be a couple from this collection that go over the 1Mil mark including the 1794, 1795 Draped Bust, 1796 and who knows what could happen with a rare opportunity as there could be a bidding war over some. A big collector that has several multi-million dollar coins is Simpson. Will he be the one that steps up for the rare opportunity? And then the other BIG QUESTION....will a couple of the coins meet reserve? TDN isn't going to be giving these things away.

It will be interesting to see what happens. Beyond that, hopefully TDN isn't leaving the fun coin collecting community and this is just another step in his adventure to something different in the coin world. All the best to him and his journey.

Edit: It could be that the sale of these coins could be used as a down payment of sorts on the only legal to own 1933 $20 or a J-1776 or....I bet it would be cool to add your name to the ownership list of the 1933 $20.

10-15 years ago when Legend felt 10 yrs or more off the market defined "fresh".... they might not have qualified. But I just noticed this past week that Legend redefined "fresh" to 5-6 yrs in one of their recent 2020 market reports. So now a lot more stuff is "fresh." In any event, quality and pedigree matter more than freshness.

If I have just one request for @tradedollarnut, it would be to fill in the comments for the coins without them on the Registry Set. I love reading an owner's notes on their experience of each coin.

I was going to go with a subliminal message, but don't know which function key that is. Wait, I figured it out...

Maybe Bruce {Hansen} knows something {Hansen} about market timing {Hansen} that the rest of us don't {Hansen}?

(Feel free to replace my subliminal message with one of your own. :#
