Statehood Quarters with countermarks ( letter stamps ) Notes

I just found a second quarter with a countermark.
The Utah one I found about a year ago and posted it here on another thread.
I wonder how many different states and how may of each state was produced. Anyone else have one?

I think mine is more graffiti than countermark.

Those are personalized marks and only the individual that made them would be able to say how many he/she made. No numismatic value. Maybe in 100 years some collectors will want them. Cheers, RickO

like ric said, not produced but individually stamped. Note the placement of each letter in relation to the others. It indicates each letter was made with and individual punch, one letter at a time. Most machinists have such a set of individual punches that they strike with a hammer.

The OP's quarters are part of the "Quarter Notes" project. It is a surrepticious project and has encompassed dozens of different state quarters.

The tool used is a changeable type holder/punch, so although the letters are ever so slightly misaligned, they would be consistent coin to coin.

I think the meaning of the Utah message was figured out when you first posted it (?), but I do not at first glance know the meaning of the TN quarter yet.

Out of curiosity, what part of the country are you in? I have several of these, mostly from eBay, but I have never found one in the wild.

Here are a few more of mine. I have more which I will post in the future.

The meaning of some of the messages is obvious, while others take quite a bit of analysis to figure out.

On a Utah quarter: "-K TOO MUCH"

On an Arkansas quarter (stamped underneath the diamond): "IN THE ROUGH"

On an Illinois quarter: " SICK N LOUD"

Here is a rarity - a Quarter Notes counterstamp on a dollar coin: "MARKETING EXCELLENCE"

This coin was meant as an award; the obverse shows the recipient's name, which has been kept confidential.

The "Diamond in the rough" was an easy one.

The Illinois "Sick n Loud"
Might be referring to the stampers opinion of farms/city or agriculture/industry in the State.
Sick is below the farm and Loud is below the city skyline.

The Utah "-K Too Much" or = Okay too much.
Might be referring to stampers opinion on religious control over Government & laws. (drinking laws)

Just a few dumb guesses....cuz I'm not very good at figuring this stuff out.

I can answer....

It is a reference to the state's name in a play on words.

"Rhode Island" becomes "Road Island", and a median strip is an island in the road. I have also seen "Roundabout" on RI quarters.

But they don't reject. They are the proper weight and size. The distortion is not enough to make them rejectable.

I've got some more from the Quarter Notes program.

Got mine in the mail, not from circulation. From the shadowy "Quarter Master" himself, it would seem. If you ever get mail from Quarter Notes, OPEN IT! Not only will there almost always be a counterstamped quarter inside, but on more than one occasion I found a crisp, new, totally real $100 bill as well! And I know someone else who got a $50. So this mysterious person is pretty generous. Crazy? Maybe. But I like his brand of crazy. He can send me mail anytime. I truly have no idea who he is.

Anyway, here are the ones I have.

The "Quarter Master" should send me a quarter for finding the most out of circulation. LOL

I am averaging about 1 per 100,000 coins.....they are not easy to find.

I am kind of surprised a random person has not posted here from a search on the web.

I agree, but I think I know why.

I search on ebay for counterstamps and finding listings by non-collectors is very difficult. They don't know the lingo (counterstamp/countermark).

Actually, I think the answer is in there somewhere. I was thinking along the same lines, but have not quite nailed it down yet.
